There were 4 of us, so we picked out some apps to share. Many of the items have a photo in the menu, so we figured what we had ordered was enough to share. Well the portions in the photo were much bigger than what we received. How completely annoying is this! The crab ragoons were pictured as a plate of 10, but we got 6. Had we known, we would have asked for 2 orders. The bait and switch tactic is cheesy and gives you an idea of how these people feel about their customers.

The taste of the food overall was ok. I ordered the fisherman's boat, which seemed to have been the most bland of all the plates ordered. I added some sauce from a friends plate which helped.

The ambiance is decent, but the tables are undersized... be ready to rub elbows with your table mate. The restaurant itself is small. I didn't count tables but would guess 12. The table behind us asked them to turn down the AC which was blasting on our backs, but they failed to deliver.

The server was friendly but barely spoke any English. Not a problem unless your the type to ask for all kinds of modifications to your order.

Cleanliness was under par. We were sitting by a window and the sill was full of bug droppings. You could tell these sills hadn't been properly cleaned in months.

We went with a party of 8 for a late Sunday lunch. Everyone at the table was served their food but me. The waiter never came to explain why my dish was delayed. We planned on dessert, but before we could order it we were given the bill. While the food was good, I wouldn't rush back to eat here again.

The quality of this restaurant had gone down in terms of consistency of excellence of the food and service last year. But we have visited twice in the past two months and both times the food and service have been terrific. This may be because the owner is now back on site. Whatever the explanation for the improvement, this restaurant now provides superb food and service.

Although the food at the Guilford CT. Som Siam is good, there are some caveats about this restaurant. The service, never first rate to begin with, has deteriorated to the point where we had to walk out one time because there were four people ordering takeout, and it seemed too much for the staff to handle. After waiting about ten minutes to be seated, we left and ate elsewhere. This was an early hour (6:30) and although there were only one or two tables occupied, the two staff members dealing with the takeout order seemed overwhelmed.

Returning on a weekend night at a later hour, things were better. The small dining room (seats about 40 people) was busy, but the service was good enough. If you go, I'd recommend going after 7:30. For some reason, this is not a late night place.

The food has always been good. My favorite is garlic duck, crisply roasted half duckling in delicious garlic sauce, served with the usual accompanying vegetables. The spicy green curry is perfumey and redolent of Thai seasonings. The sizzling seafood platter was excellent, a mixture of shrimp, scallops, mussels and squid. The squid was a trifle rubbery, but overall the dish was fine. The sauce is savory and delicious. An appetizer of chicken dumplings was too doughy for my taste, but the Thai dried beef appetizer is excellent and recommended. Don't expect juicy meat, it's dried beef.Singcha Thai beer is a fine accompaniment to your meal.

The menu indicates the spiciness of the dishes served, but if you want it spiced the Thai way, you have to insist and stress that you like it very hot. Else it will be less spicy than advertised.

Not expensive, and if you can put up with ho-hum service you'll enjoy your meal. Once again--go later rather than earlier. Four stars for the food, two four the service gives Som Siam its three star rating.
