Nehemiah Brainerd House B&B
Ranked #1 of 1 Haddam B&B and Inns
Reviewed 27 June 2013

Our daughter found The Brainerd House B&B for the entire family to stay at during the week of her wedding. You aren’t supposed to gush about a place when reviewing it, but it’s hard not to do so. This place was incredible! The rooms were beautifully decorated and all were very clean and comfortable. The bathrooms have been updated, and the water pressure met my husband’s high expectations. The bedrooms/suites are very separate from each other. The common areas were used constantly by the family. We planted ourselves in the lovely sunroom or on the patio first thing in the morning or as soon as we returned each evening. The lawn was well-manicured and all of the flowers and planters were stunning. The Laurel cottage is just as charming and beautiful as pictured on the website - the view was outstanding.

Even more impressive were Geoff and Maryan, the innkeepers. They were welcoming, knowledgeable, witty, and the most accommodating owners we’ve ever encountered. From the moment we arrived, they made sure we were comfortable. Breakfast was planned around our schedule each day and we were never disappointed with the quality or presentation of the meal. Maryan is a very talented cook - we’d love to see her compete on The Food Network! While Maryan was cooking, Geoff would often keep us entertained with his knowledge of the area. They were both very resourceful and lots of fun. We definitely arrived as strangers and left as good friends. And I can’t finish without mentioning the blue berry stain incident. I was eating a blueberry pancake and didn’t notice that I had sliced through a berry until the juice squirted on my new, white pants. Maryan immediately got some stain remover for me, but to no avail. I changed and left the house wishing I had been more careful. While I was gone, Maryan picked the pants up and removed the stain. She and Goeff are the best! We will be returning to the Brainerd House B&B on our next trip to Connecticut.

We had a very nice evening at the Nehemiah Brainerd House. The hosts were very friendly and provided outstanding service, and the location was ideal for heading over to the Goodspeed Opera House. The breakfast was great and our room was very comfortable. What more could you ask for?

The cottage at the Nehemiah Brainerd House is a perfect, private retreat! This charming cottage is tucked into the woods overlooking the Connecticut River in historic Haddam. Although you cannot see the river, the location of this gem was perfect for me to attend functions on both sides of the river. The little house is beautifully appointed - a cozy, well-designed kitchen, the main room with its fireplace creates a charming ambience. French doors open to a bright, little alcove and the bathroom includes a soaking tub and a gorgeous shower. Everything was spottless! Staying in this wee cottage gives you the impression of living in a tree house! The innkeepers were very responsive, efficient, and respected my privacy. They made me feel like family!

Room Tip: This cottage sits behind the main house, a Bed & Breakfast. I preferred the privacy of the cott...

We stayed at the Cottage available at the Nehemiah Brainerd B&B, and wow!
At the cottage you feal like you are in your own woodsy paradise overlooking a massive beautiful river. The cottage has EVERY amenity you could possible want yet is the cosiest place we have ever stayed. And as if the cottage isn't enough, within 15 minutes you can drive to the Essex steam train and riverboat, fancy dining, an opera house, a castle tour, artsy little community 'main streets', mom & pop ice cream shop, antiques, architectural buildings, bridges, I can go on and on. This place is a must!

Having stayed at larger 5 star hotels during the visit it was great to have a week integrating into a family environment.

The owners present their guest house like a welcoming home. The rooms are good with the relaxing area even better.

We were a large wedding party family and they made this time so special.

The breakfasts are something special. Everywhere else we chose from a menu. Here it was a surprise every morning.

We honestly hope to return.

My friends and our kids stayed at this wonderful B&B recently since we were exploring the Essex area, and were so sorry we only stayed one night. The house is beautifully maintained and decorated just perfectly. The beds were comfortable, the breakfast was delicious, and the hosts Maryan and Geoff were lovely and welcoming. Very close to all that we wanted to do, but well set back from the street with plenty of land and vistas to contemplate.

We plan to come again and stay longer next year!

Maryann and Geoff gave us such a wonderful welcome - we had tea and cakes on arrival and chatted for sometime!

Their home is beautifully old English, clean and well decorated. In the evening they recommended we go to Brush Mill Inn for dinner which was very good.

Breakfast was cooked specially for us - we had a full English, toast, fruit juice and coffee to set us up for the day.

Maryann and Geoff are a very hospitable couple and made us feel as though we were staying with friends. We were only sorry we couldn't stay for longer for more chats!
