“Pleasant stay... not bad at all.”
Reviewed 14 November 2013

Pleasant stay at The Talbot,
Rooms clean and tidy but I found the bar area a bit grubby. Tables in the bar area very sticky.
Restaurant lovely,food good,
good service considering there was a wedding party also staying at the hotel . However there was bedding left at the bottom of the stairs when we arrived and was still there when we left the next day... not a good look for the hotel I'm afraid... All said though that is not much of a bugbare so not too bad at all.

Dreadful place! DO NOT PROVIDE YOUR CREDIT OR DEBIT CARD DETAILS TO THIS HOTEL.

Our friends’ daughter chose this venue for their wedding and we booked a room overnight because it was too far for us to travel in a day. 2 weeks before the wedding we had a message left on our answerphone saying that there had been a burglary at the hotel and our credit card details had been compromised. They took three days to inform us, by which time over £800 had been taken from our credit card.

It transpired that the staff had kept written copies of all the pre-booking details in a folder, which was kept on the reception desk. This folder had been taken. Having telephoned the hotel to express our annoyance at their incompetence, as a gesture of goodwill, we were offered our pre-booked room as complimentary.

On arrival at the day of the wedding, the room was not available as it had not been cleaned from the previous guests. My wife asked if it was possible to have an alternative room just to change in, but was told “no, you’ll have to use the toilet”. It only got worse from there on … drinks were charged at the bar at probably double the normal rate, with spirits charged at £8 a measure. Bottles of typical ‘house-wine’ were charged at £18 a bottle and the staff, none of which appeared to have been older than 18, showed little courtesy or regard for the guests.

When we eventually obtained the key for our room in an annexe out at the rear of the venue, it was disappointing. Whoever had cleaned the room had not bothered to check their work. The toilet was unclean and stained whilst the rear facing window overlooked a piece of unkempt farmland with what appeared to be abandoned vehicles.

The next morning breakfast was provided at an extra cost of £8.25 per person. The catering staff were nonchalant and slow. The cooked breakfast we asked for was eventually served cold and when asked if they could provide a warm breakfast, the plate was taken and not returned. Likewise with a cup of coffee and a pot of tea. It took a stern complaint to the catering manager to rectify these things. Simple things to get right, but something was drastically wrong with the service from the kitchen.

Upon leaving, when checking out, the complimentary room offer had been rescinded and a subsequent charge made on my credit card, by the time we had travelled home that day.

No doubt other guest may have enjoyed their stay and not found the same level of poor service or expensive drinks and breakfast. But alas, we will never return to such a poorly managed facility again.

Great food. Sad about the service. A disinterested receptionist, dead flowers on the table (why?), friends order for glass of wine during main course never arrived with the meal. Just a shame really. If we left dead flowers on our dining table it would say more than anything that we simply don't care enough. No apology either.

The menu was very limited. There were six of us but three of us didn't have starters as they were very limited! The food was good but we we're put in the conservatory and it had no ambiance! Service and staff very nice but will not pho there again.

Just an average hotel with a few problems.
Bed way too soft but great if your into sleeping in marshmallows.
English breakfast, about the worst I've had anywhere, crisp bacon - virtually uncooked and about the fattiest streaky bacon I've ever seen, asked for it to be recooked, came back lovely on one side, other side hadn't been touched so just shoved under the grill. Black pudding swimming in fat, that's the fat it was cooked in not its contents. Basically inedible.
Annex entrance smelt horribly of mould, not bad during the day but after a night with the doors shut it was overpoweringly disgusting.
In all fairness though when the issues were reported to the management they immediately refunded all the cost of our stay including the breakfasts.

Meeting some friends at the weekend, we decided to meet half way which was about junction 10 M25, looking in the good pub guide Guildford appeared the favourite, but further searching came up with Ripley and The Talbot Inn; and I am very glad it did. CHEF DE CUISINE Gavin Chilcott and his team provided a jolly good lunch for us.

Not a huge menu, but large menus are often where places go wrong. The Talbot allows for choice and to keep standards high. The excellent range of roasts for 13th October was Lamb, Pork and Beef, though you don't have to have a roast.

Starters and Desserts all looked (and those we tasted were) very good. Certainly recommend is the salad of beetroot and goat’s cheese with a walnut dressing, which was delicious. We didn't have one but a trifle was on offer with Wally Ladd, - no - I didn't know what this was either and neither did our waitress, but I can tell you that the trifle is named after Wally Ladd, who apparently a pastry chef at the Connaught hotel. (from Marco Pierre White)

The Talbot has a comfortable and light dinging room with a wall of windows looking on to a small garden.

Should you find yourself in Ripley or needing to escape the M25 at junction 10, put up at the Talbot Inn!

Bed and breakfast, lets take the good part first...the bed..soft, sumptious good nights sleep. The room clean, however a little too akin to Premier Inn rooms for the price. The shower tray to wall joint was black in parts, obvious to us so management shouldnt miss it. !
Now the bad part. Breakfast..a well deserved full English after a few drinks the night before consisted of a golf ball for an egg, one upturned mushroom full of oil which spread across the plate when emptied. A tomato which appeared to have been put under a hot grill for enough time to singe the top most skin leaving it cold, uncooked but was complimented by the cold sausage. My wifes eggs benedict muffin was uncooked.I pointed out my concerns to the waiter and asked that the chef be informed of my comments....no response. I am told that the Hotel is now run by a celebrity chef..well, if so, I shant be trying any of his recipes ! The very next night it was my pleasure to stay at Imperial Hotel Exmouth..a very good example how to get a full English worthy of its name ! Talbot...how could you get it so wrong in such a lovely setting ?

Room Tip: Choose one of the rooms in the old part.
