“Just lovely! ”

Had never visited Elizabeth Park before although I have lived in CT my whole life. It was beautiful. Lots of activity. Even some brides having pictures taken. The roses were peaking but had we gone a few weeks earlier we could have enjoyed irises and peonies. There is a restaurant named Pond House. Nice setting. There is a venue for weddings or parties very pretty.

“Visiting a World Class Rose Garden”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

Hartford has plenty of problems but, like many small cities, it also has some incredible surprises. My favorite this time of year: The Elizabeth Park Rose Garden. It's one of the largest municipal public gardens in the U.S. and contains many rare varieties. Avid gardeners from Japan and Great Britain come for tours all of the time but locals rarely even know about it. The city does a great job maintaining in, thanks in large part to a huge contingent of volunteers. Across from the ancient arches and rose beds there's a lovely Japanese style garden with a remarkable hanging cedar.

I am not even a gardener and I seek out this space every June. It's one of the great shared spaces in a city that wrestles with a lot of racial tension. People from dozens of ethnic and racial groups circulate around the park, which is remarkable safe. I have never heard of any vandalism of the flowers, an astounding tribute to the collective respect for something lovely.

The Pond House Restaurant has excellent locally grown cuisine and, in the summer months only, a little takeout window that's more kid-friendly.

On Wednesday summer nights the city sponsors free outdoor concerts on a grassy field next to the garden. The quality is inconsistent but some nights they get top of the line entertainers (Hartford has a very strong Jazz scene, for example).

“Needs attention”
Reviewed 10 June 2014

We had lunch at the Pond House on 6/7/2014 and was looking forward to a post-lunch walk through the Rose Garden. So disappointing to see weeds in the beds and dead branches on the arbors. It looks like it needs some serious attention. I can't understand why it looked so unkempt. There was also a wedding thereon that day and I would have thought someone at the park would have made sure that the gardens looked their best.

It was a lovely place but there was no playground or place to swim.People were picnicking because there are no bbq pits but some brought their own.We walked around but didn't stay long because there was no playground for my 5 year old son.He did have fun watching the ducks in the pond.
