“Wonderful place but agree: BEWARE of weddings”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

We had the exact same experience as reviewer LeoZ did, several weeks later. We stayed here last year and it is a wonderfully maintained resort with a pool and gorgeous lakefront. We were hoping for a relaxing weekend where our son -- a counselor at a nearby camp -- could stay with us for some "quality time," quiet and R&R on a Saturday and Sunday night. We had a lovely room in the Countryside building, far from the main hotel, same as last year.

Upon check-in, we were told there would be a wedding that night with music, but it would over by 10 pm. When we returned from dinner around 9, the wedding was in full swing, with deafening DJ disco music and a thumping bass that shook the building, even with the windows closed. When we called the desk, they then informed us that the music was scheduled to go until 11:30 pm, and that this had been the plan all along. No one could explain the difference between what we were told at check-in vs the reality. It ruined our evening and kept our exhausted son from enjoying his one evening off.

There were nice enough to give us a $100 credit upon checkout (the room was $300) and treat us to breakfast... but I would have been very happy to pay full price and not have our stay on such a sour note.

Additionally, I thanked the desk clerk who checked us out; he never looked up, never said thanks or apologized or offered any parting words.

This clearly is a popular wedding venue and I'm sure if it were my wedding, I'd think it was great. But we need some truth in advertising: they should inform people at the time of reservation if there is going to be a giant nighttime wedding there and also be truthful at the time of check-in. And they should not be taking upwards of $300 a night from those seeking a quiet weekend in the country if they know in advance they can't deliver on that.

So I recommend that if you want to stay here -- and when it's quiet it's wonderful -- you press them for details of what other events are booked when you plan your stay....

Room Tip: The rooms in the outer buildings can be very nice, private, and quiet (when there's not an event...

Thank you very much for your response and for your favorable rating of the property. I am terribly sorry for the lack of communication with my front desk staff being unaware the wedding was going past 10pm. More than 90% of the wedding events held at Interlaken have an end time of 10pm, and this is probably the reason they assumed 10pm on Saturday night. I am going to make sure that 100% of the events have a cut-off of 10pm, unless of course they fill the entire property. Some events have already been booked into 2014 and 2015, and we will certainly make contact with all of our leisure Guests to make them aware of any end time past 10pm.
Once again, I am terribly sorry your evening was disrupted.

It is more akin to a vacation resort rather than hotel. Not only is there a pool, but a lake with Kayaks available for residents for free.
The rooms are excellent and the staff friendly and nice. I had dinner at the restaurant and it was delish.
Negatives? It is a bit pricy. If you are staying in the area and looking for a cheaper place to stay, try Great Barrington.

Thank you for your positive review of our resort. Although one may find alternate accommodations in Great Barrington, they would miss spending time at the peaceful and private lakefront or dining right on-site. I am so glad you were able to relax and take advantage of all that we have to offer. Please plan for a return visit soon as we'd love to welcome you back once again!

We had a wonderful stay at the Intelaken Inn! The hotel was clean and comfortable and the staff very friendly and welcoming. We rented a boat on EastTwin Lakes, went biking on the Harlem Valley Rail Trail, and walked around the town of Millerton NY. We also enjoyed walking the grounds of the Inn and sitting by the lake enjoying the view. The restaurant there was booked but we had a great meal at the Woodland. Next time we will try Morgan’s. I have already recommended your Inn to several friends and we plan to come back in the fall! Thank you for making our getaway so pleasant!

Our daughter was married at the Interlaken Inn on June 28, 2014. Our family and friends stayed there as well. We had 123 guests and family at the wedding. The glorious weekend began with a rehearsal dinner, which was delicious. The wait staff was friendly and welcoming. At 8 PM we all gathered for a bonfire at the lake. This helped set the mood for the main event. On Saturday morning our hairdressers met us in the new spacious beautiful bridal suite, where 8 women were able to get ready. The ceremony at the lake, outdoor cocktail hour and tented reception were spectacular. We chose a buffet dinner and each dish was better than the last. Country Gardeners decorated the tent and wedding and did a superb job. Besides the bride and groom, the stars of this event were wedding coordinator Stephanie and head chef Brandon. They were present and attentive to every detail. They continually went out of their way to make everything perfect. The Interlaken Inn exceeded all of our dreams and made this one of the most special days of our lives.

Lovely venue. Sadly, when we visited there was an outdoor wedding reception. Despite being told when we made the reservation, that the reception would end by 10, the loud and poorly performed music went beyond midnight. Sleep was at a premium. Certainly not what one anticipates when spending $300 per night.

I am terribly sorry for the inconvenience this Guest suffered, and I will be gathering more information on how this could have happened. The contracted wedding occupied every room surrounding the wedding facility, so I will certainly work to understand how a room in the Sunnyside building could have affected this person's stay. It is my intention to make sure all travelers visiting our property have a fantastic stay.

Thank you for stating our property is a 'lovely venue'. Trust that I will get to the bottom of what happened.

We have been returning to the Interlaken Inn for 15+ years. Why? The Inn is nice, clean and they have affordable packages. The staff is friendly and helpful. The food is fantastic.

There are different buildings that can help reflect your stay. This time we were in the Sunnyside building. It is a Victorian home that has 1 pet friendly room with a King bed. Our bed was very comfortable. The room is nicely appointed and there is a mini fridge to keep dog food, soda etc. There is a nominal "pet fee" for your stay. This includes very comfy dog beds that our dog slept in immediately.

We took a three night package and added some extra nights. The weather was great. The lake is beautiful and so relaxing to sit and read. We did our usual walks on the Harlem Valley Rail trail in Millerton. We visited Great Barrington, Salisbury, Sharon, Millbrook, Millerton. My husband played golf at the Hotchkiss school next door to the Inn. He practiced putting on the greens by the big lake. He played golf in Egremont CC nearby. The driving range in Millerton is good too. We went canoeing, swimming at the inn and there is tennis available. We were there for a week and were not bored, even after going up so often, we did new things.

Often, it is up to you to enjoy your vacation, but The Interlaken makes it easy because they offer a lot and there are a lot of things to do nearby. It is a great location from the Metro NY area.

I can not say enough nice things about the staff. From the moment we checked in we were welcomed by Liz. Every time you walked into the lobby, Winston, Liz, Alyssa, Judy, Amy or William said hello, asked how dinner, or breakfast was. They were always cordial and helpful. The housekeeping staff, Managed by Helen were nice and willing to provide whatever we needed. Kevin and Michelle B take such pride in the inn. They are wonderful people. It was nice to socialize with them at the "Intermingle" the inn offers on Wednesdays.

The Inn holds an intermingle on Wednesdays to get to know the guests, staff and local business partners. It is a meet and greet of sorts. They offer cocktails, food samplings and nice company for an hour. This Intermingle was by the lake. It was perfect and the sample cocktail was yummy. A great job by Wes and Brandon for their creative talents for the pallet.

And then there is Morgans and the breakfast during the week. Mon - Fri there is a free breakfast. Brenda greets the Inn guests with a smile. She is always trying to please the guests and she makes yummy omlettes. She has been a wonderful addition to the Interlaken staff. We asked for a special dish and Eric made sure it was perfect for us. They had a pork loin special that was amazing.

The strip steak was as good, if not better, thank the NYC steak houses. There was a homemade gnocci that was out of this world. Lest you forget, desert offerings are great too. Again Morgans is 5 star cuisine and if you want something that is not on the menu, ask. If you have dietary restrictions, let them know before you arrive. They will make it happen for you. The Staff at Morgans is great, Eric, Brendon, Wes, William and Tom and Fernando were on while we visited. Incredible dinners each night!

Lastly, we asked to see the newly done Penthouse Suite...WOW. It is out of a chic NYC Hotel. Beautifully appointed, rooftop Jacuzzi and fountain for relaxing and it is FABULOUS. I am planning on staying there without the dog..maybe for an anniversary!

I think this place is great and I recommend it to everyone. If I did not like something I would write about it, but there is nothing negative to say. Loved it. Thank you Interlaken Inn!

Room Tip: Pet friendly rooms are all nice...If you want a more contemporary room go for the townhouse rooms...

Thank you, Virginia, for such a wonderful and detailed review. Your warm and sincere comments about our property and staff mean so much.

I am so pleased you enjoyed your extra long stay with us, both relaxing at the property and in the local area. As you've pointed out, there really is so much to do while visiting this part of Connecticut. It looks like you did most of our favorite activities!

You are a very loyal Guest and we all appreciate that very much. We look forward to seeing you again soon, hopefully in our new Penthouse Suite. Thank you again for taking the time to write such compliments of Interlaken.

I am writing this to respond to the previous bad wedding review which was held last Saturday at Interlaken Inn. It was the wedding of my only daughter, which she said after, "was the wedding she always dreamed of. A prefect wedding." Every guest who attended basically agreed . "It was just beautiful from the setting , food, flowers, music , ceremony everything perfect' But at last we cannot please everyone.
True it is a short walk to the lake, on a paved road where the ceremony was held. But it a guest feels the walk is to much they can drive or be driven to the sight, The appetizer which she didn't like was , crab salad on plantain, which was one of the many appetizers we picked for a long list was a favorite of mine. Again cant please everyone.
True as any early Spring night it did get cooler. But those who found it uncomfortable could have went to the attached room off the tent. Again it was my daughters choice to leave the sides of the tent up. Noone left early because of the chill. And no one was unhappy except maybe one guest.... All in all my daughter was very happy with her wedding. And as already stated isn't that what a wedding is al about the bride? Not a guest who has a chip on her shoulder. Would I recommend this venue for a wedding. Absolutely, Stephanie was the best wedding planner. The entire staff at Interlaken went out of their way to make this the most beautiful wedding for my daughter. I thank each and everyone for a beautiful day.
