I'd definitely stay again.....It was a girls-getaway weekend for my birthday, and when we arrived to check-in there were balloons waiting for me. (Thanks Alicia, it really made my weekend special). We stayed in the Schoolhouse which is rustic and charming, and we made good use of the fireplace! I loved that they had it all ready for us....just light the match and viola! On Friday night we went to the restaurant on grounds (Alicia made our reservations for us, and though the restaurant was busy, they had our table waiting) The meal was delicious (I had one of their specials that night 'venison sausage'---really good!!!). I would definitely recommend this place to others

I was hoping to have a nice weekend away and take advantage of the charm Litchfield and the surrounding towns offer in spades. And this was what I got. The Inn is not high luxury but comfortable and nice. The people working there are kind, down to earth and accommodating. I will return!

Room Tip: Ask for a room the separate annex. It's quiet and pleasant!

This is an authentic colonial inn - rustic and charming. Many original details. If you are looking for an old inn, with all its rustic charm still intact, this is the place for you. The rooms in the tavern and old schoolhouse are crooked and charming in period furnishings - ours had a working gas fireplace. - This is not a luxury property, rather a nice getaway into the past. If you are looking for luxury, you will not be happy here. If you are looking for basic but clean and comfortable rooms, in a truly authentic New England colonial inn, you have found a great spot. - Staff was friendly and went out of their way to accommodate our requests. - Quaint village with amenities is just a five minute drive away. - I am giving 4 stars to this property because it provided what I was looking for; a rustic, unspoiled & very enjoyable New England experience. The rooms would not typically rate 4 stars.

Room Tip: The rooms above the tavern have fireplaces & provide a true colonial experience. - Right upstair...

I can't comment on the rooms/inn but we ate in the restaurant and all I can say is ask for Barbara for your server. She is the best server I have ever had. She is a wealth of knowledge on the food, pairing and choices. She seems to truly love food and service (rare these days ) and making the customer enjoy every minute. She is detail oriented, careful and attentive. We only had apps and dessert but they were outstanding. Get the table in front of the fireplace, if possible, in the bar and enjoy!

I spent a weekend at the Tollgate Hill Inn in October and it was a great time! When we arrived, there were cookies and hot apple cider waiting at the check in desk, the staff was hospitable and friendly, and we were provided with great recommendations about things to do in the area and places to dine. We stayed in a room located in the main building, it was spacious and comfortable. We especially enjoyed the deck (although, next time we will make sure it is summer time so we can enjoy a glass of wine and good book out there). We did enjoy dinner at the Mockingbird, the building certainly has a rustic charm to it. For Litchfield, we found the price to be a bargain! We definitely plan on visiting again soon!

Room Tip: Stayed in Room 16, amazing wood floors and wood burning fire place.

There are rooms in three separate buildings. There is the original tavern building, a schoolhouse building, and a newer building. The rooms in the tavern building feel as though they are still from the 1800's (this is not a good thing). They are dirty, smelly, dark, etc. The schoolhouse rooms are nice, but you had best book the entire building, because the walls are paper thin and sound travels easily. The rooms in the newer building are better, but still feel like they haven't been maintained in about 15 years.

The staff doesn't have a clue about service. There was a family gathering of staff members at the front desk and they were not interested in helping us.

The one positive, which isn't really related to the Inn, is the Mockingbird restaurant (owned separately from the inn). The food was excellent, if just a little pricey, but the best pork I have ever had.

I'm not sure if it is the restaurant or the other building that is giving this place any kind of reasonable rating. It probably needs to be seperated into the restaurant and the hotel. We had a terrible stay here. The noise from the restaurant was terrible in our room with drunken patrons loudly bragging and laughing until 11:30 pm. Then some drunken Snooki wanna be tried to enter our room confusing it for hers. In addition to this the room was cold horribly and dated in decor. For the money the room was it was atrocious. No answer at the desk when this was going on and an insufficient response when the asked my wife how her stay was at checkout. Would never stay there again.

Room Tip: Don't even think about staying in the building with the restaurant.
