“Going down hill.”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

Born and raised in Manchester, Shady Glen has gone down hill fast. They have always been overpriced but the food and service was worth it. Lately the food especially the cheeseburgers are so overpriced for the quality and taste. The service used to be courteous now I seems to us that the customers are a inconvenience. What a shame for Manchester's history.

“Shady Glen is a true American icon”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

Shady Glen is a true American icon. It is well worth the visit for lunch or dinner. This is my first trip back to Shady Glen in about 20 years. It was much too long between visits. It is really a step back in time with the menu selections on the wall. The cooks and waitress dressed in classic outfits. Service is fast and friendly. The decor is retro and a step back in time. My kids loved watching the soda being made by hand. The cheeseburgers are as good as or even better than advertised. Fantastic!! The fries are the classic crinkle style. The sundae and milk shakes are worth the splurge to top off a fantastic lunch. They only take cash. No credit cards. Prices are very reasonable. You really need to make this a trip for a lunch and dinner once in your life time if you live in CT or visiting family or friends. It is one of the true hidden gems in CT.

“Great father's day treat”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

An iconic restaurant with great food and really good ice cream. You feel like you are going back in time to the way Friendly's was back in the sixties, but with a unique cheese burger and condiments. Good food, friendly service, and it made my 87 year old father really happy to eat there. Can't get much better than that! They will make a shake for you out of any of the ice cream flavors, i had a coconut shake. For dessert I had the maple walnut ice cream with a maple walnut stickly, gooey topping, it was really tasty. My wife loves grape nut ice cream, and they had it. She said it was outstanding! Happy days!

“Remin”

Classic Americana

This place reminds me of an old-school ice cream parlor or a Woolworth’s lunch counter. There are actually two locations and both are the same, even though one location is in a shopping plaza. My wife and I have been to both several times as we drive through the Hartford, CT area. Both locations are about a mile from I-84, 5 miles east of Hartford. We always go there for the Bernice platter and milkshakes. Yes the cheeseburger with the crusty cheese is as unique as everyone describes. It is a small burger in comparison to say the regular double cheeseburger at a Five Guys. But the Bernice has the right balance of bun, meat, cheese and accoutrements. Add a tasty milkshake to your meal and you are in for a food coma. The service is always very polite and attentive. The only negative might be the price. It will cost you over 20 bucks to get 2 cheeseburger platters and 2 milk shakes. But I think that the ambience which bleeds Americana red (white and blue), makes up for it. The only thing missing is the Saturday Evening Post.
