“Hasn't changed”
Reviewed 10 August 2014 via mobile

Have been going here for 30 years, and it had not changed. Seating is seat yourself, and can be daunting to newcomers. Basically there are two lines one to the right for bar seating, the one to the left for booth. We had 5 in or party, so we were quickly brought a chair. The hamburgers come with two patties. The cheeseburgers are unlike anywhere else, and if you want healthy, this is not the thing to order. Luscious cheese is melted in a large square until crispy. The waitress brings a small paper cup of water to start with.

“Iconic, quaint, but needs a refresher in charm school”
Reviewed 9 August 2014

We had very high hopes for this classic American diner icon, but sadly it left us a bit disappointed.
We drove 30 minutes out of the way for this experience and right off the start, they hit my pet peeve of travel ... hospitality. We arrived on a Friday during the peak of lunch (12:30) and after walking in the front door we were ignored (as were 2 other couples). There is no hostess and although we made eye contact with 3 waitstaff and 2 soda jerks, it took 10 minutes for someone to instruct us on the queueing policy (move as far left or far right as possible - past the counter seating -- and wait for one of the 8 booths to open).
The waitstaff was hopping at this time of day -- we were greeted efficiently, but not warmly. The ambiance is classic 50s -- from the menus on the walls, the hard formica counters, the waitstaff attire -- the only thing missing is the jukebox! The cheeseburger presentation is unique and has been feature on many shows and magazines. Other reviewers mention the size as small -- but it should be satisfying to all but a teenage boy. I had the fish and chips -- two large cod pieces -- but it tasted like supermarket frozen fish. The cole slaw --- MMMMM - about the best anywhere.
The crinkle cut fries -- a tad under cooked. I also enjoyed a chocolate milkshake -- it was very good -- not as thick as Friendlys or McDonalds but tasty and enough for 3 1/2 small glassfuls. The bill came to $23 for a cheeseburger, fish and chips, soda and shake including tax. Other diners will be cheaper -- and probably a bigger portion, but the classic presentation is at least worth one visit. I just wish they can appreciate the customer more.

“Going down hill.”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

Born and raised in Manchester, Shady Glen has gone down hill fast. They have always been overpriced but the food and service was worth it. Lately the food especially the cheeseburgers are so overpriced for the quality and taste. The service used to be courteous now I seems to us that the customers are a inconvenience. What a shame for Manchester's history.

“Shady Glen is a true American icon”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

Shady Glen is a true American icon. It is well worth the visit for lunch or dinner. This is my first trip back to Shady Glen in about 20 years. It was much too long between visits. It is really a step back in time with the menu selections on the wall. The cooks and waitress dressed in classic outfits. Service is fast and friendly. The decor is retro and a step back in time. My kids loved watching the soda being made by hand. The cheeseburgers are as good as or even better than advertised. Fantastic!! The fries are the classic crinkle style. The sundae and milk shakes are worth the splurge to top off a fantastic lunch. They only take cash. No credit cards. Prices are very reasonable. You really need to make this a trip for a lunch and dinner once in your life time if you live in CT or visiting family or friends. It is one of the true hidden gems in CT.

“Great father's day treat”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

An iconic restaurant with great food and really good ice cream. You feel like you are going back in time to the way Friendly's was back in the sixties, but with a unique cheese burger and condiments. Good food, friendly service, and it made my 87 year old father really happy to eat there. Can't get much better than that! They will make a shake for you out of any of the ice cream flavors, i had a coconut shake. For dessert I had the maple walnut ice cream with a maple walnut stickly, gooey topping, it was really tasty. My wife loves grape nut ice cream, and they had it. She said it was outstanding! Happy days!
