Owner description: Yale University Art Gallery is the oldest college art museum in America. The Gallery’s encyclopedic holdings of 200,000 objects range from ancient times to the present day and represent civilizations from around the globe. FREE and open to the public. On December 12, 2012, the Yale University Art Gallery celebrated the grand opening of the renovated and expanded museum. The expanded Gallery transforms the visitor experience of both the museum and its esteemed collections. The project united the 1953 modernist structure designed by Louis Kahn, the 1928 Old Yale Art Gallery, and the 1866 Street Hall into one continuous structure while maintaining the distinctive architectural identity of each.

The Yale University Art Gallery completed a major renovation in December 2012. The result is a beautiful and expansive gallery. We spent three hours there and probably saw only a third of the collections. I was especially impressed with the collection of artist John Trumbull, the American Revolutionary War artist.

It is FREE, has great speaking docents and thousands of pieces on display. It's a HAT TRICK for the visitor. The 45 minute tour is lively, well paced and visitor friendly. Enough said, you have to go - Don't Miss It!

Yale University's art gallery has an outstanding collection of American and European art and sculpture. They have a large collection of Roman sculpture. Additionally, they have the Dura-Europa collection. Dura Europa was an ancient city where Hebrews, Christians and pagans lived side by side. Yale archaeologists recovered and preserved the remains of an ancient synagogue, an early house where Christians worshiped and a mithraeum, where Roman soldiers worshiped the god Mithras. The museum is walking distance from the Peabody and other sites at Yale. Not only is admission free, but membership is as well!

Everyone kept telling me how great this art museum is. And I went in expecting a few fantastic pieces. Imagine my surprise to see almost all of my favorite surrealists represented. And I don't mean with a piece here or there. They had several originals of amazing artwork that I could see up close and personal.

Some of the artists: Klee, Kandinsky, Basquiat, Max Ernst, Daii, Dorothea Tanning, de Chirico, Jean Arp, Miro, Marcel Duchamp, Matisse, Warhol.

In addition, they had a LOT of pieces from Picasso - soem I had never heard of before Other artists included: Renoir, Degas, Monet, Magritte, Gauguin, Van Gogh (a very colorful piece that was amazing to see), Matisse, Cezanne, Seurat.

And I saw some other artists I had never heard of before that intrigue me. Most notably Njideka Akunyili and Henry Koerner And this is only the modern art. They had so much more!

As I was walking around the museum all I could think of was how lucky all the students at Yale are to have this right there to visit whenever they wish. If you are in New Haven - put this on your must see list.

Make time to visit the expanded and renovated Yale Art Gallery because you will NOT be disappointed. The recent expansion has provided more space, SO, more of the museum's outstanding and diverse collection is on display. There are NO lines to deal with and admission is free (a minimal donation is suggested). Couple your museum tour with a visit across the street to the Yale Center for British Art to add to your fun!
