Owner description: Yale University Art Gallery is the oldest college art museum in America. The Gallery’s encyclopedic holdings of 200,000 objects range from ancient times to the present day and represent civilizations from around the globe. FREE and open to the public. On December 12, 2012, the Yale University Art Gallery celebrated the grand opening of the renovated and expanded museum. The expanded Gallery transforms the visitor experience of both the museum and its esteemed collections. The project united the 1953 modernist structure designed by Louis Kahn, the 1928 Old Yale Art Gallery, and the 1866 Street Hall into one continuous structure while maintaining the distinctive architectural identity of each.

Living in New Haven I am perhaps biased but the recent redesign/renovation of YUAG landed it at the very top of my favorite galleries (and I have been to a few...). Aside from spectacular art, what makes the gallery so special is the intimate spaces, the constant architectural surprises, all complementing the art (but never competing with it) to create an experience that is truly unique.

At the Yale art gallery you can easily spend hours there. There is so much to see that you cannot see everything in one day. I have been there several times and still have not seen everything. Very educational.

My son was visiting from out of town, and we had a couple of hours to squeeze in a little fine art. They've an astounding variety of art from around the globe, but especially a collection deep in American art. The installations are smart and pleasing. I especially appreciated how the curators presented the Ancient Art collection by noting the progressions of cultural and political change. Very intriguing, and it kept my interest more consistently than if they'd simply offered technical commentary on the art alone.

The current jazz installation is very cool, black-and-white photographs that filled me with love and admiration, and I'm not even much of a jazz listener.

Two hours is about our limit for meditating on visual art, so it was nice to feel free to leave and plan to return without having to worry about getting our money's worth. What a generous gift to the society that this museum is entirely supported with donations.

I was very surprised and the size and scope of the collection in the Yale Art Museum. The presentation is very well organized over several floors and buildings and easily accessible. The are many noteworthy paintings on view. The range was unexpected for me. Also, don't miss the Museum of British Art across the street. Both for free...

We had an appointment, the staff were professional and on time, the reception area and side rooms/restrooms were jammed with organized tour participants so they eventually moved the large group of people out to another location which could accommodate them better.
were plenty of tours.so cannot comment on an organized tour.
