I don't understand the negative reviews. For this Englishman a 3-night stay at the Duncan was pure delight. Large, comfortable clean room. Charming, relaxing reception area. Friendly, helpful staff. Superb location right beside the Yale campus, with stunning art galleries just yards away. I can't recommend it highly enough! Thomas Steel

The Duncan is kind of a dump but it's the most conveniently located hotel in New Haven (well tied with the Study, which is next door and expensive) and unlike the Marriott is not abutting a bad area or like the New Haven Hotel or Omni on the annoying club strip. I always stash Moms here and she loves it. (The wonderful booktrader cafe is up the block across the street.)

Only cautionary tale is to not get a shared bathroom, unless you haven't had a demented alcoholic stranger as a roommate and feel like trying it out. Also if you're a smoker feel free to go nuts; you're welcome.

Devastated dirty stinking rooms. Terrible place to stay.

We were supposed to stay for two nights. But after one night, we moved next door to the wonderful Hotel Study. The room was a smoking room and it was like sleeping in an ashtray. In the middle of the night a man went crazy and started to scream. So no sleep. The very old mattress was shaped as a V and very disgusting. The window had to be open because of the smell. There was a lot of noise from the street. Firetrucks, people fighting and screaming all night long. The room var very dirty and devastated. This is the hotel from hell.

This is a great place for those on a budget who are open minded enough to appreciate what is on offer..
A grand hotel from the turn of the (last) century with quirky charms and a friendly staff, with a great location.
My room was clean and quiet with a comfortable bed, the classic neon sign was a perfect night light and the bay window was a fine place to sit and write. You are steps from the Yale campus, art museums, java shoppes, fine and casual dining, bookstores and boutiques. The lobby is a fun place to relax, with huge leather couches, comfy chairs, and plenty of room to stretch out.

If you are a demanding lover of excess; expecting high speed WiFi(there is none..depending on your room location you may be able to pick up the Yale Guest network), air conditioning (fans are available) egyptian cotton sheets, with topper,(the provided bedding was clean and comfortable) free breakfast( 6 places within 200 yards) and other trappings of the big bucks life style, you should probably head next door and pay 5X the price. For those of us NOT on a expense account or a trust fund, the Duncan allows one to have a unique experience at a great price.

Room Tip: The staff will be glad to show you several rooms (if more than one is available ) The ones in the fr...

If you are looking for a glossy snobby place to stay, this is not it. It could be called run down, dated, but we found it charming. It was clean, the staff were great once you broke the ice, and its in a great location. Be aware of what it is, and don't complain if you expect something else. Have a look at the rooms before deciding to stay or not. We would stay again.

I was in town taking a tour of the Yale campus and boy, was this a treat! Yes it's old, but that's part of the charm. If I wanted a Hilton and I would have stayed in a Hilton. Everyone was very polite. I never heard any other guests and I was seconds from the New Haven night life. I'm already booking my next reservation!
