You have to visit The Book Barn in Niantic, Ct. It is one of our favorite date places. You can easily spend a day here. The main facilitity has many out buildings, each holding a different genre of book. You can both sell and buy books there. There are hundreds of thousands to choose from. Prices average from$1 to approx $4 or $5 for hard cover. Families and pets are welcome. There are play areas for children, spots to sit and read, and chess tables available. It is very organized, from parking to selling books and bags everywhere to stack your new stash in. They also carry rare books as well. There is literally something for everyone, from art, history, mystery, horror, current events, romance, travel, childrens books, gardening ...could go on and on. Tip..we usually stackmour bags with interests then take them and sit in a shady area and review what we really
want to purchase. The only downfall is adequate bathrooms. They have two outdoor porta potties.

“One of a kind!”
Reviewed 7 June 2014

Even though I'm not that big a fan of books, I absolutely fell in love with this place. It is not just an enormous book store but a cosy place to spend a lot of time with all those books and just to wonder around in the endless aisles, nooks and gardens. I even found a very unknown book my grandma had told me to read and got it for such a cheap price! Well worth visiting for any kind of a person and it's a lovely, different way to spend time either solo or with family or friends!

“A Little Quirky; A Lot to Love”
Reviewed 1 June 2014

While camping at Hammonasset State Park in Madison, Connecticut, many years ago, we encountered an overcast day intermingled with showers. What to do with a trio of boys anxious to expend some energy? A friend suggested The Book Barn in Niantic (a 30 minute drive up I-95). The Book Barn is more than a used book store - it is an experience. Over half a million books are gathered in their four locations in Niantic. The premier attraction, however, is at the flagship location at 41 West Main Street in Niantic. What began with a small rented space now encompasses multiple buildings, outdoor bookshelves, rolling carts, and sheds. Books are everywhere. Organization is haphazard, with books broadly categorized in one building or another under titles such as "Chick Lit", "Hades", "Ellis Island", or "The Last Page". Such is the
intrigue for bibliophiles and the casual reader - the hunt. You are rewarded when you find that particular title or author you are searching for. You are equally rewarded when you stumble upon a book that you never heard of before.

The Book Barn is more than books, though. The are a host of activities to keep non-readers entertained. Basketball. Oversized checkers and chess. Feeding the goats. Strolling through the gardens or reading the headstones on the faux cemetary. Completing the Cat Scavenger Hunt. Thirsty? Grab a cup of coffee. Hungry? Have a donut. Bored? Sit in a rustic rocking chair and take a nap.

This month marks the 9th year that The Book Barn has entertained us while up in the Madison area. What began as a chance encounter on a dreary day, has now become a staple for our camping trips to Hammonasset and Rocky Neck State Parks. There is a "feel" to the book barn that will grow on you and keep you coming back.

Tip: If you can't find what you are searching for, it may be in one of the other nearby locations. Cookbooks, for instance, are located a short drive downtown.

“Best. Place. Ever.”
Reviewed 31 May 2014 via mobile

Went here for the first time this year though had heard of it before. What a fantastic place to visit. Our trip coincided with a 25th anniversary craft, fairy garden creations! Crafts aside there is enough here to hold my entire family's attention from 5yo to 40! Love all the kiosks with books and gardens and playgrounds! Just a magical time!

“Eat before you go, you'll want to skip meals and keep browsing”
Reviewed 30 May 2014

Used books galore! The Book Barn is always a delight. The main location is huge and, seriously, pack a lunch and use their picnic tables because you could be there all day.

I've never walked out of here empty handed and I always feel like I've gotten a good deal. The staff is friendly and knowledgable and the store cats(at the main location) love to be pet. The only problem I have here is wanting too many books.
