“A nice surprise in PE!”
Reviewed 24 March 2014

My childhood friend and I started our Garden Route tour in PE. We arrived from Joburg on a 3 pm flight. I didn't hear a lot about Port Elizabeth before we came, so I considered it a short stop-over on our week-long trip. We are both American, but I have been living in South Africa for almost two years. Our drive from the airport was unimpressive. When we arrived at Singa, I was surprised to find a lovely oasis in the otherwise short, drab ride from the airport! We were warmly greeted and taken to our room. While our room was lovely, the shower was glass and situated where there is no privacy. Once I explained to the manager on duty that we are only friends, she put us in two separate rooms because the lodge was not fully booked. My second room was even more fabulous than the first! And, both of our showers were more private. We could have stayed in either room. The furnishings are unique in each room and fabulous! I saw four rooms in total and each was special. This is a very romantic place to stay, and we wished our husbands were able to make the trip with us!
We were only a short walk to the beautiful beaches of PE. We explored the shoreline in the evening and the following morning. We opted to have dinner at the hotel as the grounds are so beautiful, and the food was fabulous! It was a limited three-course menu, but both of us were able to choose dishes we enjoyed immensely. The breakfast in the morning was amazing as well. This was our one and only stay in PE. I was, however, surprised to see the other reviewers' thoughts on their stay here. We had a lovely experience and believed the lodge deserve their 5 star rating based on our other experiences. The only complaint I had was that I could hear the kitchen staff from my room in the evening and the morning. I put on the AC and went back to sleep. If the manager had been there during check-out, I would have mentioned that the dishes were stacked and washed noisily. If I had been told to put on the AC, I would have slept peacefully. The bed was so amazing, that I drifted back to sleep.

Room Tip: Ask about the placement of the shower and if the toilet has a door. Many of the rooms do have a priv...

Wow! It sounds like you really had a wonderful time. Thank you so much for your kinds words, it means so much to us that we could be part of this special experience with you. It really makes our hearts sing when we hear praises like yours. From your feedback we can tell that we need to work a bit harder on making sure that when you book, you know what kind of privacy settings you're looking at when sharing a room. Thanks for letting us know and for helping us make this more clear to other travelers in your room tip. We're so glad that you managed to get back to sleep after being disturbed by the cleaning staff; we've discussed your concerns about noise with the team, thank you for bringing this to our attention to be dealt with. It sounds like overall you had a wonderful time and you made the most of what the area has to offer- a short walk to the beach in the evening is the perfect way to end a day of traveling. We're delighted that you decided to stay in and eat at the lodge- you really do just get to enjoy the place so much more. It really makes all the difference that you've shared your thoughts on TripAdvisor- that you were so kind is a blessing. We hope you will return with your husbands in no time. Our best wishes from the bailey family and the rest of the Singa Town Lodge team.

Nice retreat in a suburb of PE, in a quite and safe area. Nice and spacious room obviously decorated by someone with taste. A pity that there was no hot water for our morning shower and the ropes of the front door blind was all tangled up. That made it difficult to open and close it. Don't go there if you are looking for a room with a view. All you see is a small yard and a high building next door.

We stayed for one night at Singa Lodge at the end of a trip travelling the Garden Route. We booked two suites. First, the suites are beautifully and originally designed, each unique with an African Lodge feel. They are spacious with huge baths and separate showers. The beds were very comfortable. We checked in around 6.30pm and were shown our rooms. They were great but within a few minutes problems started to emerge which the desk staff didn't seem able to solve. The internet didn't work for almost the entire stay. It came online about an hour before checkout. My television had only three stations that worked properly. We couldn't open the safes. I raised these issues with the lovely girl on the front desk and she was able to help with the safe issue.

The evening meal in the restaurant was very good but only one red wine was available from the wine list. Not a big problem but I think guests would reasonably expect more than that. The pool and garden areas are spectacular. We enjoyed our stay very much but would suggest that guests probably expect things to work a little better. Having said that, I would definitely recommend Singa Lodge as a unique place to stay in Port Elizabeth.

Room Tip: Suite 102 was very nice because it is so private.

Thank you so much for your review Mark. We are so glad you appreciated Singa's unique appeal and that you liked the gardens, which we really love too. We appreciate that you let us know of some of the slips you experienced. We are currently working on a plan to upgrade our Wifi in all of our lodges, including Singa to ensure that this will not happen again. We appreciate your recommendation and thank you for your support. Best wishes from the Bailey Family and the rest of the Singa Lodge team

It would have to be business that brings you to this city, but if you find you have to overnight here, try the Singa Lodge. Delightful, helpful people, comfortable, huge tribal-chic rooms with all comforts. Ideally located to the airport and some excellent restaurants.

I had the good fortune to be invited to join the PE Business Chamber and the famous Clem Sunter for dinner at Singa and decided to stay-over last Wednesday night. I know Singa well but hadn't been there for over a year - it was looking fresh and as good as ever. The dinner was fabulous - a Karroo lamb shank that fell off the bone perfectly - mouth wateringly good! My ten dining companions were similarly impressed - well done chef. Back to my room the sumptuous suite 9, this has always been my favourite room and remains so. Clem Sunter was in Suite 1 and claimed he could organise a soccer match there it was so big; and took a bath in the famous round bath just for the experience. Manager Desiree is an absolute star - well done for keeping Singa up with the best of the best in PE!! I will be back asap.

Thank you for giving us such a great review. Desiree will be thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your stay and your meal at Singa. The Karoo Lamb is always a winning favourite and with such great quality being offered by South African farmers in the Karoo, how could it go wrong? Our chef will be delighted at your praise nonetheless. We look forward to welcoming you back to suite 9 in the near future. Best wishes from the Bailey family, Desiree and the Singa team

This was the fifth of our six stops from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth. We had a wonderful welcome from Michael who was very attentive and helpful - including making recommendations and our dinner reservation at a nearby restaurant.

Our room was amazingly large with bath and separate shower area to one side. It was unusual but worked well. It took a few mins to work out how to lower all of the reed blinds as there were so many windows but our room was not overlooked. Loved the location of sep rooms in diff parts of the gardens. We slept well during our overnight stop although the AC unit was directly above our bed.

The mini bar works on an honesty basis and it was nice to find loads of plug sockets in the room including one English one!

In the morning we enjoyed the visual delights of this African themed guest house. Also had a great chat with Michael and with the manager, Desiree, who also provided a great suggestion re a coffee stop on our way to the game reserve which was to be our final stop.

We thought the website provides a fair representation of the venue and were surprised by some of the negative reviews here. Sure there are some oddities at Simga but we had a very positive experience and the staff showed that they will do whatever they can to make your stay a good one.

Room Tip: Each room is reached by a walk through the garden. We had number one which is not overlooked but doe...

We'd like to thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed and complimentary review. We hope you had a wonderful time on holiday and enjoyed all the experiences you were recommended in between, which really make your whole trip worth while. Desiree and Michael will be grateful for your kind words. We also hope you didn't experience any discomfort as a result of the A/C being above your bed. We thought this to be the most suitable position in the room to place it, for when people would like to relax in the heat of our African summer. We really liked that you added your room tip with other TripAdvisor viewers- the gardens do help to create a feeling of privacy and seclusion and room 1's blinds do justice of this as well. We hope to welcome you back to Singa soon. Best wishes from the Bailey family and the rest of the Singa Lodge team
