I have been traveling to Port Elizabeth for many years and normally stayed at the City Lodge Beach Road. I guess for a chain hotel group it is probably the standard to offer. The hotel is about 10 minutes away from Port Elizabeth air port. The rooms are average with a very peculiar color scheme ( see photo attached ) It is close to most restaurants but all of them close at 10 pm. Room service is available from some of the restaurants in the area, but all orders need to be placed before 930 pm I am told. The hotel is situated on the beach front with a casino in walking distance from the hotel. During the renovations of the casino complex, no shuttle service will be available. The breakfast is good, but expensive. You will have more value for money having breakfast elsewhere. A new hotel has opened next to the city lodge and will definately be my next choice.

What a wonderful hotel. It is right close to the Board walk shopping and casino complex.Five minute walk will get you there. Some great restaurants right across the road on the beach. The hotel does not serve lunch and dinner but the buffett breakfast was excellent. The hotel has tie up with some restaurants close by so you can order food to your room or go there and eat and charge the meal to your room.
The entire hotel has been recently renovated and everything is sparkling and new.Great staff and warm service.
The only negative points are that even though the hotel is right across from the beach none of the rooms have a sea view. Also no free internet. The internet cost was on the high side .
Great bath and shower and nice fluffy towels.
They have a little swimming pool and also plenty of safe parking.
Nice place to stay and would not mind staying there again.

I upgraded to this hotel after a poor night's sleep at the adjacent hotel, Road Lodge. I was very pleased with my 2 nights at City Lodge. It was a clean, modern, and efficient hotel. There was plenty of gated, secure parking near the entrance. The hotel staff was very friendly. The lobby facilities, and bar were spacious, comfortable, and well maintained. There was a tiny pool outside facing the beach. I did not go in the pool, but it was clean.
The rooms were slightly on the small size. I had a nice view of the beach, though the window was not huge. The beds were comfortable and I had a good night's rest. The TV was flat screen with a good selection of channels, though it was a small TV. The bathroom was clean, of a decent size, with a tub-shower. The shower had good pressure, and readily available warm water. The price was reasonable, as I paid around $100 USD/night. The location was good. It is a 7-10 minute walk to the Boardwalk/Casino complex, and a 5 minute drive to the airport.
My only negatives were the AC wasn't very powerful, and like most SA hotels, WiFi was available but fairly expensive for a voucher.

We stayed at the City Lodge Port Elizabeth for a 2 night weekend to attend my wife's aunt's 90th birthday. We chose this hotel mainly for its location. It is a few minutes drive to the local Casino complex, which offers a good selection of restaurants, plus it is just across the road from the beach, and as PE is a compact city, it is not more than 15 minutes from most shopping malls, and tourist attractions, and just 5 minutes from the airport.
On arrival, the security/doorman could have been a bit more helpful, but in his defence he did offer to take our luggage. The hotel is in the process of building a new complex, and parking is a bit far from the reception, but this is temporary.

Check in was a breeze, and we were clearly told about where to eat breakfast, and times as well.

The room is not the largest I have ever stayed in, but is more than sufficient, and a plus was that sufficient clothes hangers were supplied. Bathroom consisted of bath and shower cubicle. The TV was bit old fashioned, but the hotel offered a decent selection of channels, which include sports, news, entertainment, cartoons and the 4 free to air channels available in SA. The bed was very comfortable. Our room looked out over the adjacent Courtyard Hotel, which blocked out the seaview.

Breakfast was a buffet and cooked breakfast, with a good selection. I would rate breakfast among one the best I have experienced in my travels. Service breakfast was good.

Overall the service was good, and when I was suffering severe heartburn, one of the night staff was able to assist with some antacid.

I would not recommend using the adjacent restaurant for room service, as the food is mediocre. The only reason we utilised this restaurant (John Dory's) was because I wanted to watch some rugby on the Friday evening. Because there are so many restaurants around the hotel, one can eat out and have a decent meal within a couple of minutes drive.

Overall, our stay was a pleasant stay, and would I recommend this hotel? Definitely.Would I stay there again? Definitely.

We unexpectedly needed to stay the night in PE. A few years ago, I stayed in a great guesthouse in PE, but decided to book in at a hotel rather than try to get in touch with the guesthouse owners. Sorry I didn't go with my gut feeling! The hotel has a great location and is in close proximity to the sea, restaurants, and shops. When we arrived, the hotel had recently sprayed for insects and the smell was so horrible my eyes were watering and I had a throbbing headache after a few minutes. The manager was reluctant to move us or refund us, but a kind employee found a room on the other side of the hotel where the smell was more bearable. Unfortunately, that side of the hotel faced a large construction area and we were woken up around dawn by construction. The rooms were a bit outdated, but clean and roomy. Would definitely explore more options and probably choose another hotel for future visits.
