Every now and then, a new restaurant opens in a space that had a succession of other establishments come and go. The usual response from the locals is "Ho hum, another one giving it a try". But for Jessie and Nick, the energetic duo who make this restaurant worth coming to, it has real staying power. The locals love it and making a reservation is mandatory on the usual busy nights. We were tipped off to its existence by our fiends who live nearby. If the place is packed, they will accommodate you and serve at the small bar. If you are a single, this is a good perch to enjoy a meal and not feel you are eaves dropping on a couple who are whispering sweet nothings to each other at the next table.
Pleasantly decorated, the small space given the different dining levels, offers privacy and interest. To start there is a basket of excellent garlic bread that has everyone wanting to keep eating it. But save room because the other dishes offer a broad selection that should please even difficult diners. You know the folks who never want want the chef selects as sides. At Jessie's, they suggest but you can pick any two items and not be looked at like you are committing a crime for not wanting the standard fare. Ah freedom of choice rather than reform school this is what you will eat or else.
I had short ribs and they were done as short ribs should be, rich and juicy. There was no attempt to count calories with this dish especially when I pared it with pommes frites. My wife went for the lobster mac and cheese and commented that it was perfectly balanced and not wall paper starch thick. The wine list offers a nice selection and the waitress was a delight and made us feel as if we had been there many times before and were among their best regulars. Nick came out of the kitchen for a chat and of course Jessie was there making sure things went smoothly. Yes there is a Jessie and she takes this restaurant very seriously as does Nick.
All in all, it is a most worthwhile stop just off I-95. Next time I am going to have the prepared to order potato chips and their home made carrot cake even if I have the short ribs again. My hunch is the other dishes are worth sampling so the short ribs may have to wait. But I could always get an order of them to go because they will be excellent the next day too.
