We returned home on Friday 23rd August from a very enjoyable three night stay at the The Crown Inn, in the centre of West Down village near Ilfracombe. The premises have been recently extended to offer B&B accommodation and the rooms are most definitely a jewel in the Crown. Ours was tastefully furnished, very clean, light and airy with an exceptionally comfortable double bed, a well-appointed en-suite shower room and tea/coffee making facilities.
The family could not have done more to make us feel welcome. There was cereal, fruit juice, a substantial, perfectly cooked full English breakfast and toast offered each morning. The evening menu was varied on the evening we chose to eat there, offering something for all tastes. The venison and duck dishes we ordered were expertly crafted and delicious. We will definitely return and are very grateful to a friend for recommending this place to us.

Stumbled upon this looking for somewhere to eat and what a find. Friendly staff fitted us in as long as we ordered quickly. A busy pub and understandably so. Delicious food, from the specials menu I ordered sole fillet stuffed with crab and prawns, in a white wine sauce, with dauphinois potatoes which came with carrots and green beans, absolutely gorgeous and just the perfect quantity. Also able to manage a warm chocolate brownie with clotted cream and ice cream for dessert - scrummy!

A lovely venue and good grub. A good mix of restaurant and traditional pub food is available. Lots of fish to choose from which for me is great. Definite worth a visit.

We arrived at the Crown Inn at 7pm on a Wednesday evening...... When we attempted to order food at the bar we were told a waitress would come to the table but not until 7.45...... We agreed as we assumed we would be served promptly as they appeared to be staggering each order time by 15 minutes. I began to get a little worried when 'inbooked' people who arrived after us started to have there orders taken ...... But as they had managed to find us a table we didn't think about questioning this ..... At 8pm, after being in the pub for an hour we questioned why our order hadn't been taken, only to be given the response 'you haven't booked and so you'll have to wait! We responded with ...... But we did book at 7pm for 7.45! And so we would settle the bar bill and leave..... At which pint a surly shrug was given in return. Upon payment of our bar bill we requested to speak to the manager as we felt we had been unfairly treated as we were also then too late to travel elsewhere. The only positive point was the manager (whose night off it was) came to speak to us and apologised profusely, offering to cook our food 'that instant'herself and that the system had obviously broken down as if we were given a time of 7.45 then it should have been kept , she also waivered our bar bill (£8.10) I believe the food is excellent ...... unfortunately I can't comment .... Our advice ...... book well in advance and perhaps give prompt reminders to the waiting staff at your allocated time !!!
