For the last seven years, several times a year, we have visited House on the Hill. It is a "real" and elegant home, full of wonderful art objects and books, uniquely and knowledgeably furnished by the proprietess. It is located in historic old Waterbury in a neighborhood full of wonderful architecture.
The house is so inviting that one might not want to leave, but there is much to enjoy in the vicinity--the town's terrific theater and symphony, and day trips to the Litchfield Hills and Mystic areas. We always try to stay as long as we can because of the variety of choices.
Ms. Vandenburgh is a chef and caterer, and her breakfasts are knock-outs. The produce comes straight from her garden, and she is such an innovative cook that we have never had the same meal twice.
And to think that the first time we stayed at House on the Hill, we were only passing through! But it has become for us a very special destination and a singular experience.
