All very chintz and olde world :-)
An attentive host and an interesting breakfast. The room was clean and basic with slightly out dated furniture which was probably appropriate to the house style. Reasonable location and a quiet neighborhood.

We live in the adjoining town and didn't have the opportunity to enjoy the accommodating spirit of Jim and Mary until we won a certificate for "breakfast for 4" at an event they support. From the moment my husband called to make reservations, we knew it was going to be a pleasant adventure. We were correct! We were greeted by the innkeepers who had coffee prepared, and promised a tour of the inn after breakfast. During coffee, bubbly Mary described some of the Inn's interesting history while we noticed how clean everything was. Breakfast was delicious, with 2 courses of fresh fare and service was excellent. Afterwards, Jim cordially invited us on a thorough tour of the inn, inside and out - how deceiving beautiful it is from the inside! The grounds were impeccably kept while the rooms were quaint and spotless. Yes, they do iron the sheets! Two thumbs up and we will be back.

Room Tip: No pool, but beach is just a brief walk. Dunkin Donuts is close by also and 2 shopping malls to cho...

As you approach the Captain Stannard House in Westbrook, Connecticut, you get the sense of comfort & home. When you enter, you feel home and very welcome. Not only are Jim & Mary gracious hosts, but they a great supporters of their community as well. Each year the Muscular Dystrophy Association contacts them to support a social event silent auction and we are never turned away. Jim & Mary know the money raised from their donation stays local and will go to help a family in their community. Definitely a 5 star location & experience!

I just stayed one night here, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was made to feel very welcome from my initial phone call to departure. My room was large and well appointed. The bath was basic, but clean. The common areas were very inviting- both indoors and out. Breakfast was fine for me, but I can see why some reviewers have issues.

Room Tip: I was in Rm. 2 at the top of thes stairs and was afraid it would be noisy, but it wasn't.

My husband and I enjoy staying at B and B's when we travel and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the beautiful, historic, Captain Stannard House. Our hosts Mary and Jim, their family and staff were the best. Very accomodating and helpful with any request or question we had.
We were very at home roaming the grounds or relaxing in designated guest areas. The inn is conveniently located close to the beach, restaurants, museums, trains, shopping, all points of interest. Of course the entire coastal area is beautiful and full of history, quaint towns to visit
and we particularly enjoy taking scenic back roads on our daytrips. Our room was spacious,
very comfortable beds, very cozy and relaxing. Breakfast was always very tasty, nice variety
of main course, nice portion size to start the day with plenty of coffee and juice flowing! Hope to have the opportunity to return someday. Appreciate the hospitality!

My wife and I could not find a hotel within 10 or 20 miles of Madison, Connecticut so we settled for this wonderful Bed & Breakfast Captain Stannard House and wow, what a diamond in the rough. The peace and tranquility was just so nice and Jim was a social butter fly insuring everyone was take care of, yet he has a terrific insight not to be over doing it. The room was large and very airy full of nice placed pictures of classic seaside communities as well as antique furniture, lovely. My wife and I had a full bathroom attached to our room and both room and bathroom were very clean, the water was hot and plenty of it we travel down from Windham, Maine on Harley Davidson trike a very hot ride this July 5th, cold fresh bottled water for our convince and the food was out of this world. We tried to make reservations for September 27th weekend they were booked. I would have never stayed at a B&B yet by a mere blessing we stay at the Captain Stannards house it was great

Room Tip: We were in room 3 very close to the dinning room and the great room yet very quite and always a litt...

My wife and I stay mainly at B and B when we travel. We know what to expect from B and B and read the reviews on Tripadvisor about this inn. Although we liked the house and its serene environment we thought that the second B was forgotten by the owners. We are not gourmets by any stretch but we expect a nice home cooked experience from the B and B. The breakfasts here were lacking. No warm muffins of even a slice of toast were offered. All of the B and B we have stayed in put out a delicious breakfast and this experience was not. Nice folks that own this place should study other B and B and understand that eggs by themselves do not make a breakfast. Toast and biscuits or muffins should be offered to the guests. The eggs were nice but we felt cheated by the lack of the accompanying sides. $245 a night we expect something more.

Thank you for the comments about the Inn.

A full and varied breakfast is one of the things we are most proud of and I’m sorry it didn’t meet your expectations. All of our breakfasts are homemade and include a homemade bread, fresh fruit, an egg based entry with a side dish and of course juice and coffee. We try to stand out among Bed and Breakfasts both with our breakfasts and handwritten notes with homemade cookies delivered to your room each day.

On the weekend you stayed:

The first morning we started with Homemade Pound Cake with Fresh Strawberries, juice and coffee. The main course was an Egg and Sun Dried Tomato offering with Sausage from a local farm. It was complimented with sliced tomato.

The second morning we prepared Baked Scrambled Eggs with Cream Cheese and Chives. We served it with Asparagus, Roasted Red Pepper and Watermelon Cubes. Breakfast started with homemade Apple Cake, coffee, and juice.

We did not include toast with the entrée on either day since both meals started with homemade breads. Mary, Brad, Kara, were all in the dining room serving and looking out for our guests and would have been glad to provide toast if mentioned.

Mary and I do hope you stay with us on your next trip to the Connecticut Shoreline and we will try to exceed your breakfast expectations.
