Attraction details
Owner description: Reimagining itself in recent years, Westport Country Playhouse is rapidly emerging as a nationally recognized professional theater. Under the artistic direction of Mark Lamos and management direction of Michael Ross, the Playhouse creates five live theater experiences, produced at the highest level, from April through November. Its vital mix of works---dramatic, comedic, occasionally exploratory and unusual---expands the audience’s sense of what theater can be. The depth and scope of its productions display the foremost theatrical literature from the past---recent as well as distant---in addition to musicals and premieres of new plays. During the summer, the Playhouse is home to the Woodward Internship Program, renowned for the training of aspiring theater professionals. Winter at the Playhouse, from November through March, offers events outside of the main season---Family Festivities presentations, Script in Hand play readings and a Holiday Festival. In addition, businesses and organizations are encouraged to rent the handsome facility for their meetings, receptions and fundraisers

“Great productions - especially family dinners”
Reviewed 5 November 2013

Great plays, comfortable house, and the family dinners can't be beat. Nice way to visit before the show, learn about the play, and get in the mood. Sometimes tough on a school night, but well worth it.

“Westport Playhouse-Better than Broadway and in CT.”
Reviewed 29 October 2013 credit card Amex Cardmember Review

A night at the theater and the seats are comfortable and the acoustics great--the "season" has great variety. All of the performances are top notch!

Dine locally and finish the night off with a drink at The Dressing Room. A great "date night."

Nice theatre, good plays and acting. It is located in the village of Westport, an easy ride on I-95 in Ct. Their selection of plays is always first rate.

“Back to Summer Theater”
Reviewed 15 October 2013

We had been subscribers for many years. Then the old playhouse was taken down and a new one built. The Newman's felt the need for a change. It was horrible!!! No more light summer farces; dark socio-political dark plays.
Out goes the new creative director.
Now we are heading back to the rich heritage.
We've seen three productions this summer, the best of which was "Loot."
The last show is a remake of a Marx Bros movie, Room Service. Very entertaining.
We are back! You too should come.
Good sight lines, Un-amplified audible speech, even in the rear balcony.

“"Room Service" Delivers”
Reviewed 14 October 2013

The last play of the season is a 1920s play that works today. While the first act dragged a little, the reward was in the second and third acts. This farce, which was the basis of the Marx Brothers movie, was funny and well-acted and directed. The ending puts a cap on the whole fun evening. Theatergoers should not leave early. I particularly liked the performance of the lead actor. I would recommend the play to everyone who wants a good laugh.
