“A real hidden gem.”
Reviewed 9 April 2012

Having not researched the hotel before, I really did not know what to expect when we arrived at the Lavender House but when I walked into the garden it was one of the most breathtaking views I had seen for a long while. I was already beginning to wish that we were staying here for longer than 2 nights in the old colonial bungalow.

Pool & Garden Area: The pool and garden area is absolutely gorgeous. The pool area was a perfect size and perfect to lie by and read your book. The infinity pool really added to the setting and we reguarly had breakfast and afternoon tea sat out at the tables by the pool.

Rooms: The bungalow was incredibly uniquely decorated which gave a great insight into the heritage of the colonial residence. There was a billiards room, a classical sitting room along with a formal dining room with mahogany furniture. You really felt like you were in Downton Abbey when you dined there! The bedrooms were in similar style and incredibly grand. The only downside I will say is that there was no AC in my room, only a fan which did get quite hot especially as the fan was noisy at night so we tried to avoid putting it on.

Food: The food here was absolutely fantastic and the best one our trip. I also loved how involved the chef got with the day to day running of the hotel which I think is a real rarity. My mum had already read all about the infamous afternoon tea's so we made sure that we ordered one as soon as we arrived and we were not dissapointed. Freshly baked scones, sandwiches, butter cake with a choice of icings and lots more treats meant us worried how we were going to fit in dinner. Dinner was a real experience in the colonial dining room and there was always a choice between a Western and a Sri Lankan menu. Both of my parents had the Sri Lankan curry which they said was the best on their trip and I had the Western menu both nights which was very nice including a fantastic steak and flourless chocolate cake.

Service: The service here was absolutely fantastic and I would say the best we recieved during our whole two week trip of Sri Lanka. Staff were always there when you needed and there were always willing to go the extra mile whether it meant altering a menu dish slightly or choosing where you would like to have your afternoon tea. We really felt looked after during our stay.

Overall, this is an absolute must for anyone visiting the tea plantations. With only five rooms, a perfect location and excellent service, it is the perfect place to stay. We only wished we were staying another night and didn't have to go back on the road!

A long rickety road takes you up to the hotel so you begin to wander where you are going. Then you reach the entrance and it is fantastic. A plantation bungalow full of charm, wonderful scenery all around, and the pool area is absolutely wonderful.
On top of all this the food was exquisite and the Chef heard it was our 25th wedding anniversary and went to the trouble of producing a wonderful surprise cake. Can't recommend this place enough and have nt even mentioned yet how wonderful all the staff were. We hope to return one day.

The old colonial bungalow is situated in the middle of a tea plantation with the most glorious views from the garden. The staff are welcoming and courteous, the chef is brilliant and the rooms are large, elegant and extremely comfortable. It is an incredibly peaceful place and one we all long to return to.

Room Tip: All the rooms are excellent.

I just stayed at Lavender House with my husband and daughter and we cannot speak more highly of our experience. Right from arriving, passing the fountains in the driveway to the warm & friendly greeting in the conservatory with tea. The bungalow was a gorgeous colonial governors residence with a billiards room, classical sitting room overlooked by Winston Churchill and a formal dining room where all 10 guests sit around a mahogany dining table for meals at which ever time suits the individuals. We stayed in the master suite overlooking the front lawn and it was exquisite. Very large with a four poster bed and crab claw free standing bath. We were most impressed upon arrival, by asking if we could have afternoon tea. Immediately the chef went to work freshly baking scones & cake for us. An hour later we were asked where we wanted to have it served and we chose down beside the picture postcard infinity pool. We then enjoyed a bottle of wine watching the lovely sunset. We were offered cashew nuts with that and wondered why they were taking so long but were pleasantly surprised to have them arrive, freshly roasted with curry leaves - yummm. We were given a choice of menus for dinner, English or Sri Lankan & they were the best we had eaten on our tour. Our only constructive criticism of Lavender House is that although the wine cellar was impressive to look at, the choice was disappointing. We would like to see more boutique wines and less mass market brands. The surroundings are superb but the service levels are out of this world. Beyond what you would expect in top class hotels around the world. The staff are always there for your every need. Courteous but discreet. We wished we had known about this hidden gem and would definitely have stayed longer.

My family and I staid at Lavender House for 2 nights in July. We had the house almost for ourselves - there was another couple in the house at the same time, but the staff managed to give privacy to both families. We traveled across Sri Lanka and this is clearly the best hotel we tried - superb location; beautiful bungalow; and, more importantly, very pleasant and capable staff. Luxurious without being posh. The excellent Sri Lankan dinner they cooked for us and served in the private dining room will definitely remain our best food souvenir from Sri Lanka! I would definitely give Lavender House 6 stars if Trip Advisor was not limited to 5!

Lavender House was perfect in every way! We were only able to stay for one night, but we were lucky enough to be the only people there that night. The hotel has 5 bedrooms, and each is different but all are beautiful. The house is gorgeous, with a lovely lounge and dining room, and also has a billiards room. It has retained the old colonial look and decor, and feels luxurious but also homely and comfortable. The grounds are lovely with an infinity pool that looks out over the tea plantation. The staff were all excellent, so friendly and helpful. They made fresh cakes for us for afternoon tea, and the chef also made us a delicious 3 course dinner. They also arranged for someone to take us on a walk around the tea plantation and to the tea factory. I wish we could have stayed for longer, this was our favourite part of our time in Sri Lanka.

Room Tip: They are all beautiful rooms

We recently stayed at Lavender House for two night whilst on tour in Sri Lanka. The bungalow is truly amazing, for two days we were totally blown away. The service was unbelievable, the food was fantastic, we were even ungraded to the master suite as it was my husband birthday, oh and not to mention the birthday cake the chef whipped up for him.

The only negative comment I can make it what a shame the owner doesn't provide better accommodation/staff quarters for the staff and tour guides. I'm sure a little money would go a long way and make a big difference.
