Nice location and swimming beach, quiet get-away with pool table and volleyball and a few board games, fine for a long weekend away from Singapore. Our main complaint is that for the high price we paid, food quality and choice was very poor, rooms lacked style, bar drinks were non-existent (only beer available) and there was minimal service and attention to detail.
Food was the standard, cheap Malay fare to be found at low-end accommodation throughout Malaysia. But we'd paid top-line prices, and no salad in sight, only fried food and cheapest white-bread sandwiches for lunch. Set full-board menu had no buffet to speak of: food was delivered to each table, high in refined sugar and cheap carbohydrates, low in fibre and fresh veg and fruit. When we asked for a drink other then beer, we were told there was nothing else, no apology forthcoming, the wine was finished...
We had the best sea view chalet, which did have a view of the sea, but also of rubble and remains of previously demolished chalets, and general junk and eyesores that should have been cleared away. The plant pots sat on ugly concrete slabs, the rooms were decorated to Malay rather than Western tastes and using cheap materials (fibreglass bathroom and plywood walls) and the dark, closed-up rooms reeked of mosquito spray. The use of driftwood and recycled wood might have conveyed some style had it been done in with more taste, but instead it looked tacky and cluttered.
Finally, the welcome was cursory, the service was poor, and the impression we were left with was that as we'd paid in advance there was little incentive to make a good impression.
The nearby Aseania Resort was much bigger and smarter - and busier - but it was better managed. The D'Coconut is another option, with a small pool set back from the beach. The Mirage could be great as it is down at the quieter end of the beach, but only with much better management or at half the price - Neither of which look very likely.

I do not know there have so many nice islands to be explored in Johor and this is my first time organize an island hoping trip and pulau besar is my first choice, Pulau Besar have only 3 resorts and why we choose Mirage is base on the good review and it really amazed us for the good service, the owner with his wife and the children are very professional & details, they look after us so well from the morning breakfast, lunch till the dinner. This resort has only 13 rooms, less crowded and stand alone in a right corner, if you are looking for short getaway and wanna get rid from a hectic city life, reading book, stare blankly and doing nothing, this is a definitely nice resort you can stay for few days.

After having traveled for nearly two weeks through Malaysia, this was the perfect getaway to relax. I spent three days and two nights at Mirage Island Resort and very much enjoyed my stay. The boat ride was a bit rough (I eventually got used to it and in the end it was fun), and on the first day, with quite a big business group at the resort, it was a bit noisy, but the wonderful staff at Mirage Island Resort did their best to make me feel comfortable as solo traveler. The barbecue was fantastic, and I had a very good time, listing to stories from the far-traveled neighbor and Man Coral at the Mirage beach bar. On the second day, I was the only guest at the resort, and I very much enjoyed swimming, snorkeling, reading and just looking at the sea. The island is quite small, with just 3 resorts and a few kampungs, my chalet was air-conditioned and very nice (check out the new chalet, this one is even more beautiful, a two-storey chalet with a wonderful balcony and self-made furniture!), and I did not mind being away from the rest of the world, without Internet – on the contrary. Expect a low-key, laid-back resort where you can relax. A huge thank you to Christina, Man Coral and their crew! I'd love to come back.

As mentioned in my title, Pulau besar has limited activities. If you are looking for a place to relax, unwind, quite environment, probably to do some soul searching or reading than this is the place to be. Rooms at Mirage are nice & clean. Even a simple double room was equipped with air conditioned, well functioning hot shower & cleanliness was tip top. Breakfast however was a little let down due to limited choices to eggs & a single sausage & toast. As this is a small resort, no buffet meals available & you are provided by fixed meals throughout the day. There is a pool table, some board games & satellite TV near the bar & dining area. The beach in front of the resort is good for swimming on high tides.

Room Tip: All rooms are good.

Mirage staff met us at the jetty and whisked us straight away onto their speedboat. "You may get a bit wet" said Man Coral, but he was underestimating. On the open choppy water the spray came over top and we arrived drenched! Make sure you keep all luggage under cover!
At the resort, it was all a bit underwhelming; we were the only guests. More arrived the next day but it certainly was not a crowd. Pulau Besau is a very small island, with only 3 resorts, and there is not a lot to do, except relax and de-stress. The staff do their part playing some board games and pool, and cooking up a feast on Saturday nights- the barbecue was exceptional. Bit disappointed with the snorkeling at the beach, viz was low and the guy on the island needed 6 people to take his boat out, so guess what, we didn't go..... Beach was nice though, very calm water for our kids to splash in, and some nice shells to collect. Summary, a getaway close enough to Singapore, away from it all, and for 3-4 days it is fine!
