“Good beer”
Reviewed 12 February 2014

Real ale excellent. We were staying in the village and it was an excellent 'local', with local beers. Food was good, I had the burger selection which was very imaginative. Tasty. Very good. Nice place.

A real country inn with excellent cask beers, friendly atmosphere and some of the best food in the north west, the beds are very comfortable, the staff go out of their way to make your stay comfortable. After a meal and a few drinks after a day on the hills a blissful night was enjoyed, will defiantly be staying again.

This is an absolutely wonderful place to stay.
My wife and I were guests at a retirement function that was being held in the downstairs pub. We decided to give the accommodation a try, which we were not disappointed with.
Our room (number 1) was spacious and the bed was one of the most comfortable we have ever slept in when away from home. The room was so dark with the lights out that good quality sleep was guaranteed, and we heard no noise whatsoever. The table lamps were dimmable through touch so this made it easy to check the time when I needed to get up. The bathroom was beautifully tiled and appointed, and the TV was more than big enough for our needs.
The range of beers on offer was fantastic. The landlord knows exactly how to keep his ale’s and I tried a number. My favourite was the guest ale which was a Christmas Special. My wife was equally pleased with the red wine selection. Something we have struggled with in other pubs.
Breakfast was an absolute delight. The main restaurant is a beautiful place with plenty of interesting things to see. The bacon, which I am told is locally sourced, was without doubt the nicest I have ever had. The owners were attentive and it is clear that they know their trade very well.
My wife and I have been looking for that near home overnight experience for the last couple of years, now that our boys are old enough to be left. This is somewhere we will definitely be coming back to.
I can’t wait to sit in front of the open fire downstairs with a pint in hand listening to the local crack. Being a Cumbrian I’m used to the warm hospitality, but this place just makes it that bit more special.
You’d be a fool to miss out on this wonderful location.

Stayed for two nights whilst fishing the Eden nearby and found it to be the perfect stopover. The room was spacious and comfortable and the food and bar were first class. The landlord and staff were very friendly and went out of their way to provide a first class service. The only negative comment was the noise throughout the night from the village clock opposite( ie. every quarter of an hour) I would recommend a good set of ear plugs! It worked for me. A very quiet location otherwise , off the beaten track but within reach of Penrith ( 5 miles) and beautiful countryside all around.

The meals and local beers were excellent. This is a great location to end the first day of the C2C ride. Our bikes were safely stored within the bar area once it had closed.
I would definitely stay again for an overnight stop.

Just returned from our third visit to the Highland Drove - we really feel at home in this place and use it to break our journey from Scotland to Yorkshire. Excellent food either in the restaurant or bar, superb range of well kept cask ales from Theakstons, Eden Brewery etc and a real country pub atmosphere. If you're looking for sanitised glass and chrome minimalism this is not for you! Hosts and staff are good humoured, welcoming and attentive and the accommodation is cosy and comfortable. The bar is well used by locals and the place is obviously a focus of life in this attractive village, so if you are early to bed and a light sleeper the distant sound of merriment from the bar and the quarter hour chimes of the church clock may intrude on your slumbers. I think that, like us, most will find them charmingly reminiscent of how things used to be in English villages throughout the land and neither managed to disturb our sleep one bit.
The Highland Drove is a traditional country pub with a good restaurant and rooms. If that's what you like, you'll like The Highland Drove. We do.
