We would definitely return here. The cottage is cosy and well furnished. The kitchen seems to have been newly refurbished with quality fittings. Views from the kitchen window are over the fields. The bedrooms are nice too. There needs to be a proviso regarding the rest of the comments as I think there is justification for the few faults. I did not meet Don and Tracey but my wife went to ask for a towel as there weren't enough. She did not find Don to be very friendly or welcoming. The doorway was deep in leaves yes it's winter but they should have been cleared before we arrived. The fridge and freezer were not on when we got there. There were no essentials such as salt/pepper which is highly unusual in self/catering properties in our experience (e.g. just stayed in over 15 of them in Australia and they all had basic essentials although nowhere near this standard overall usually). The frying pan needed replacing as it was scratched to bits. These small but important things need sorting.
The proviso is that one of their parents was seriously ill and I understand and sympathise with them both and guess this is the reason for the few small faults. We wish them both well. The pub which serves good food and beer is close by. There are walks over the fields to the Eden Valley from the door. We would definitely go back.

Me and my girlfriend arrived Friday afternoon for a 3 day stay. I got engaged in our cottage (she said YES on Valentines day) an we toured the lakes for the next three days. The cottage was superb and we would definitely go back there, comfy, nice place to spend time relaxing and with all that the area has to offer, you are never far away from something new to see, Great local pub with plenty of character and good ales. All round top location, many thanks to John and Linda, will never forget our weekend stay.
After a break of over 20 years, have stayed at the cottages twice within 6 weeks!Brought back many happy memories of past holidays but pleased to find that the village (Great Salkeld) has not overly changed during this period.
John and Linda offer clean, appropriately furnished, quality accomodation with the emphasis on comfort in a peaceful,de-stressing environment. Some reviewers have described the decor as "dated" - I would say the whole environment is entirely appropriate to the buildings ie. renovated stone cottages. All linen, towels etc provided = just turn up!If you really have to bring the laptop, free wifi is available.
I would recommend heartily, for those wanting a quiet, relaxing break. The local hostelry, the Highland Drove ,offers a good selection of real ales, and a full menu - chaps, the pub is a 2 minute walk from your front door!
If you've always wanted to write that novel, this is a great place to hole up in!
Beautiful accomodation in a lovely part of the world with a friendly welcome from the owners. Can't wait to go back again!
