“Elegant B&B”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 April 2012

A very nice quiet and elegant B&B. As has been described by almost all the other reviews, the hospitality is unmatched, the house is splendid and nicely decorated, the rooms are immaculate and comfortable (though not plush) and the gardens are pretty. The breakfasts are also special.

We planned a much needed romantic getaway in the charming town of Lewes, DE and needed a place to stay. Initially I hoped to get a budget room in a plain motel but had the good fortune to find the John Penrose Virden House which was loaded with amenties and worth every penny. It is an amazing Victorian? home with all the glorious trimmings run by a warm well travelled couple who treats their guests like royalty. We stayed in the York Cottage. It was way better than home! We started off with flexible check in, inviting conversation, wine and appetizers in the late afternoon. Later we roamed the charming town center on the same blocks. When we returned from our evening out, our room had been prepped with a bottle of Port and fine European chocolates! The bed was very comfortable too. At breakfast time we were treated to a fabulous and customized breakfast (taking into acct our food allergies).Champagne mimosas, fresh ripe berry compotes, home baked banana bread, omelettes with fresh veggies, all included!!! I lacked nothing there and will definitely go back next time we are in the area. Thank you to Jim and Ruth who really excel in giving their guests a five star experience. If I could give it 6 stars I would. A must stay!!

If you are looking for a great place to stay in a delightful town in Delaware, you can not go wrong with the Virden House in Lewes, Delaware. My husband & I stayed at The John Penrose Virden House (Virden House for short) the weekend of 11/4-11/6/11. We can not rave enough about the experience. The host & hostess, Jim & Ruth Edwards, could not have been more gracious. Ruth's wonderful breakfasts along with the extra touches of wine & cheese at 6:00 p.m. and port & chocolates later in the evening helped make our stay absolutely delightful. Jim's knowledge of the restaurants in town and his thoughtfulness in making our stay extra special were and are gratefully appreciated. Our room was a little attached cottage that gave us privacy. It was beautifully decorated with all the homey touches. The Main House was full of Victorian graciousness. Since the Main House was built in 1888, the Edwards have kept to the theme of that era with great success. The location of the Virden House was perfect. We could walk everywhere, not worrying about parking. Neither my husband nor I can find anything that needs to be improved on at the Virden House. We will certainly be back and highly recommend to anyone reading this review the John Penrose Virden House as the ideal place to stay in Lewes, De.

Room Tip: We would recommend the York Cottage, however we did not stay in the Main House where the Edwards'...

This is Our favorite place in Lewes. We try to make it every year! The House is so elegant and beautifully decorated. You will love to sit on the porch for breakfasts or just to relax. Everything is delicately presented. The warmth of the hosts Ruth and Jim is so welcoming that makes it extra especial. The breakfasts are extraordinary and will make you wish you could stay another day. The hosts are accommodating, as I have a gluten allergy and Ruth can surprise you with incredibly delicious gluten free food. They also have nice hors d'oeuvres and wine in the afternoon. I recommend this B&B as a MUST. You will enjoy it all. The location is perfect, as it's walking distance to great restaurants and stores and a short drive to the beach. With no doubt it will make your trip to Lewes a memorable one.

Room Tip: All the rooms are romantic and elegant! we stayed on this B&B several times.

We had a wonderful time! Ruth and Jim are excellent hosts, who make the stay so pleasant! The house is lovely, with an awesome porch, and beautiful dining room. Our room was clean, and comfortable, with very nice amenities. The breakfasts were delicious, gourmet, and artistically rendered. At 5:30, Ruth serves delicious cheeses and wine. In the latter evening, there was port and yummy candy. Lewis is a charming, historic town. We loved the free bikes to ride around in. We would love to go back, and would look to stay at the Virden House again.

My husband and I spent a quiet weekend in Lewes and we couldn't have been happier with this B&B. We rented one of the upstairs rooms, and it came with a separate private sitting room and bathroom. The house has been beautifully restored and we felt right at home. The bed was comfortable and the owners were incredibly welcoming and friendly. All details have been thought of, from snacks in the spotless rooms and shampoos and soaps in the bath, to pre-dinner wine & cheese. The breakfast was first rate - orange-infused french toast, apple flan, poached pears, bacon, etc. The location is solid - right near shops and restaurants and a bike ride to the state park beach. They have bikes you can use, and while they aren't the most comfy bikes, they'll get you to the beach. All in all a delightful stay! We'll be back.
