“Forget About this hotel if you have your dogs with you......”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 December 2008

I am a platinum Marriott member and have 81 stays this year, mostly Residence Inns, across the country with my 2 dogs. This was by far the lease pet-friendly of any hotel I've ever stayed at. The female desk person was actually hostile and sarcastic to me and I could not believe how badly I was treated -- for simply not walking my dogs in the "dog walk" area (I did not see a sign and had no idea). She was rude. I complained to her supervisor about her horrific "customer service". I will never go to this place again.

My husband and I stayed here for a total of 6 days/5 nights through Christmas. It was very delightful and quiet (suppose Christmas time isn't very busy for them). Our suite was #311, across from the gatehouse. The staff was very friendly and accomodating. A young man named O.J. was especially helpful and responsive to our inquiries during our stay. The suite was clean, very comfortable and had a fireplace that we used nearly every night during our stay. The cleaning service cleaned the fireplace for us each day! We hosted dinner for four on Christmas Day in our suite, thanks to the great, full kitchen. Afterward, we all enjoyed drinks by the fire. Cleaning service was usually early (before 9am), and as we are late sleepers, we learned quickly to put the "service later, please" magnet on the outside of the door. We also elected not to have service every day since we had more than enough clean towels, sheets, etc. There is a magnet you can use that says, "No Service" for this, too. I hated to leave here! The breakfasts were especially good (eggs, sausage, bacon as well as toast, cereal, etc.). Being in a downstairs unit was a bit noisy when we had neighbors upstairs. It seems like they need more insulation between floors to dampen the noise. There was one loud party in the building across from us during our stay but one call to the gatehouse settled that -security responded immediately and got the group to keep quiet the rest of the night.

  • Liked — Quiet, clean and very comfortable.
  • Disliked — Lack of sound insulation between first and second floors.

i'm glad we got the top floor, i would have hated being below with the noise we created just walking around. the floor actually sagged in two spots near and in the kitchen, the king bed was big and the room it was in was okay, but the bed its self was hard, my wife described it as the "table". the room was clean and the sheets were clean. the breakfast buffet was pretty much tasteless and left us hungry.

The Residence Inn is a group of about 15 two-floor buildings with 4-5 suites per building, all with a kitchenette with full size refrigerator, dishwasher and electric stove and oven. I was in a studio and then a 1 bedroom. Both are about the same size and have a king size bed, sofa bed, integrated and standalone desks. The 1 bed has a door between the bedroom and the living area, a dining table that seats 6 and a TV in the bedroom. Wireless internet is free and there's also a free lobby computer with a printer. The rooms appear to have been recently refurbished so I didn't experience anything the previous travelers have said. The staff are friendly, but a little rough around the edges.

It's in a convenient location right next to an I-95 exit. 15 min to Wilmington, 10 min to Newark and University of Delaware, and 10 min to historic New Castle. That being said, it's in an isolated location so the only place you can walk to is the Wendy's, Boston Market, drug store and supermarket about 10min away.

There's only 1 bus line that runs past the Residence Inn and it only runs once per hour M-F and 6 times on Saturday, so don't rely on that to get anywhere.

Hot breakfast is available 7 days a week and Mon-Thurs there's a light dinner/social hour from 5:30-7pm.

The fitness facilities consist of 2 treadmills, 1 precor and 1 reclining bike. You apparently can use the YMCA facilities, but I never tried it.

  • Liked — Light dinners Mon-Thurs
  • Disliked — Noise from I-95

2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 August 2007

We reserved two duplex rooms from August 17-19th for our extended family to stay while attending a wedding in the area. Rooms 1222 and 1224 to be exact. Room 1224 was fine when first entered, however the bed sheets for 1222, while professionally made, smelled and looked as if they were not laundered after the previous occupants. Room 1222 in general had signs of use from the previous occupants. Our family overlooked this and stayed in the room anyway.

After returning to the hotel the next evening, after the wedding, exhausted and looking forward to a good nights rest ... they found neither room to have been serviced by housekeeping. The garbage was not taken out and smelled. The wet towels from that morning were still laying on the bathroom floor, the beds were not made, fresh towels and toilettries had not been replenished. That night our family went to use the fold out bed from the sofa for the first time, and discovered to their horror bright red blood on the sheets, most likely from the previous occupants as it was still red.

They called the front desk and were told by Betty that she was the only person on staff and unable to bring new supplies. Housekeeping had left for the day and no one would be up to clean the rooms. However, someone from the room could go down to the front desk to pick up fresh towels, sheets and toilettries. Upon returning to room 1222 with big black garbage bags full of supplies they discovered the sheets inside smelled of body odor, as if not washed since the last person used them, and when unfolded there were orange-brown blood splatters all over. Shortly after someone on staff slipped the bill under the door. How interesting that no one was on staff to bring the towels, but they sure had someone to send the bill!

Lastly, we reserved the room under our platinum membership and were supposed to received free gifts, usually a basket with fruit and cookies and a bottled water. Neither room received those.

After returning home I contacted the general manager, and requested the second night from each room be refunded. He agreed and promplty issued a refund. Because of his willingness to refund part of the cost for the stay and sincere appologies for this experience, I would consider staying there again, if I were to return to the area. I was told that this is not typical of the hotel. More than likely whoever was on housekeeping/laundery duty that day is going to be repremanded if not released from services, so this will probably not happen again.

The rooms are attractive and nicely layed out with duplex style bedrooms and baths upstairs and more private bedroom and bath downstairs. Aside from the housekeeping issues the second day it was a comfortable stay. Breakfast was elegantly layed out and all in attendence were satisfied with the selection and quality of the food.

  • Liked — Nice room layout w/ full kitchen, comfotably sleeps 6, nice breakfast buffet too.
  • Disliked — Inadequate housekeeping & hygiene issues.

Excellent hotel. Beds were super comfortable. Everything was super clean. Toilet was broken off one day but was fixed promptly. One car break in which was happening along 95 corridor, but was at entrance. Breakfast was good. I was there with a friend for 1 week, she was very happy also.

We chose a two-bedroom Residence Inn suite as opposed to two hotel rooms. With that in mind, the price was pretty good. It's a haul up the stairs to the upstairs units, but the suite smelled clean and looked good and had 3 televisions. The pillowtop mattress on the king
bedroom of our suite was wonderful, apparently brand new. Lots of room, but again, stairs to the loft bedroom. More kitchen amenities than we needed, but it was nice to have a place to sit and eat take out from a local restaurant with a line longer than we wanted to stand in. Breakfast was typical hotel breakfast bar with lots of choices. Handy to have a selection of food available at their market late at night, also. We were on the street side but were not disturbed by traffic noise. I would stay here again.

  • Liked — The king size bed
  • Disliked — All the stairs.
