We rented bikes in Rehoboth and made the ten to fifteen minute ride out to Gordon's Pond. The ride took us along some beautiful homes. After entering the park we walked to the beach and then rode the bicycles to the observation deck. Next time I will definitely bring binoculars to view the birds. The ride out and back was pretty level and not strenuous at all. I would certainly recommend this excursion.

We walked up the beach from the parking area then took the pond trail back from the point parking area and enjoyed it very much. The towers on the beach were interesting and there is a comprehensive interpretive sign about them on the paved part of the pond trail. It is a very easy trail with only one section that was hilly and sandy, but that section seemed to be under construction and should have a gravel path soon. Our kids made the hike with no trouble and enjoyed it as well. We saw lots of birds!

Gordon Pond Trail - we were looking for something to do on a windy beach day, but I came to the beach prepared. I had a list of lots of walks and hikes in the OC area. So on this day we decided to head up highway 1 and see which ones we could find. Gordons Pond Hike (where is is "paved") is level with little elevational climb. We walked only the "paved" section as our legs/feet were already protesting our previous days sand walking and the full trail goes over packed and loose sand (we hope to take this trail another future day). There is a very nice observation platform at the end of the paved trail. Nice views along the way too.

After an easy 2 mile bike ride along the coast continuing north from Rehoboth, this is a 3/4 mile crushed gravel trail ( bike and leashed dogs allowed) that winds through dunes to an inland pond. Birdlife will vary with the time of day and season. Plants gorgeous as the seasons change. Take time to stop and admits textures and colors of plants waving in the breeze. A sandy trail past the viewing platform is for foot traffic only. This sandy trail continues north around the pond farther into Cape Henlopen State Park and is only open after Labor Day due to traveling theough fragile nesting bird habitat.

The first part of the walking trail up to the observation point is very nice for walking or biking. The observation point was a great spot to view a variety of birds on the pond. The second part of the trail around Gordon's Pond was not well maintained...grass was knee high or taller on trail, and 5-6' tall at sides. Really needed to be cut for better walking. We visited in August and the deer flies, ticks and dragonflies were horrible!! This was Not a pleasant hike at all, until we finally reached the dunes at the end.......... I would not recommend the second part of this trail unless you have long pants and lots of insect repellent! Definitely not for hiking with children or grumpy teenagers!
