“FROM JANICE AND MARTIN: - EXCELLENT SERVICE - EXCELLENT FOOD!!!”
Reviewed 20 September 2013

We went for a 2 course evening meal Martin had a wonderfully cooked Sea Bream and I had a steak cooked to perfection and both had bread and butter pudding to follow - delicious! Both June and Ian were wonderful hosts and spent a lot of time chatting to us. This is set in the most beautiful of settings - what more could you ask for? 10 out of 10.

8 of us stayed after a day's walking before returning over the hills the following day to Glen Tanar. Great efforts had been made to accommodate us all comfortably and it was a perfect place to rest and relax. Dinner was delicious and so was the accompanying wine. We were entertained by red squirrels, a woodpecker, the guinea fowl and other birds at the feeding table through the window at breakfast time. The log fires (even on the beautiful bright days) added a real warmth to the already warm welcome. A great place for groups!

Our stay was all that it could be. The house is full of character and was clean and comfortable. We much enjoyed meeting and taking to Ian and June, who made us very welcome and went to great lengths to see that we had what we wanted. June's food was really first class. We hope to return for some fishing lessons.

Great place to stay if you like complete solitude surrounded by beautiful countryside and wildlife. Rooms are excellent, very comfortable (no TV in case you like your mod cons) and Iain is a very genial host, anyone not used to such attention might find it a little intense at first!
Dinner was nice, a well cooked lamb roast, at £25 per head plus £19 a bottle for Campo Viejo 2008 reserva was the most expensive restuarant we ate in during our stay in Scotland. I would expect for that price at least a choice from a table d'hote menu, If I go again I would enquire as to whether I could take my own wine. I'm not tight but I'm also not rich!

Room Tip: Try to get one overlooking the garden, you'll get a great view of the red squirels in the mornin...

We are delighted your stay at House of Mark was enjoyable and you liked the local Scottish lamb you chose from our choice of menu as part of the 3 course dinner at £25.00 instead of the 2 course dinner at £18.50. We take great care in selecting local produce where possible. We know our prices are very competitive compared to what is available locally.

Our stay at House of Mark has been a wonderful experience!
Surrounded by beautiful and peaceful surroundings we fell asleep and woke up every morning to the sound of birds and of the Water of Mark; looking outside our window we could see the bird table, strategically positioned outside the dining room window, which wasn’t just visited but all kind of birds but by Red squirrels too!
We loved sitting by the window, or on the comfy beds, and just enjoying the sight of the forest and of the guinea fowl and sheep walking around the garden!
What we enjoyed the most though was Ian and June’s company! They are wonderful people and we wish we stayed longer so that we could get to know them better! All the area is rich in history, especially the manse itself, and it’s been lovely hearing Ian telling us all the stories about it. June is a wonderful cook: she can satisfy every palate and made me some of the best vegetarian cannelloni I’ve ever tasted. And the Lemon Drizzle we found in our room after a long day of visiting…to die for! Ian often told us that he wanted us to feel like at home…and that’s what it felt like!
Many thanks to Ian and June for this wonderful experience! Vladiza&Lucio

We found the House of Mark on TripAdviser and we choosed it because it got excellent recommandations. We did not regret it! After a long drive through the Glen Esk, we got a very warm welcome from Ian with a cup of tea at the fireplace. Afterwards we had an excellent dinner with a nice wine in a personal atmosphere. We slept wonderful in the old fashioned furnished room... very quiet! Fantastic breakfast in the morning. In brief: It's a pitty that we did not have the time to stay longer - but maybe next time!?! Many thanks to Ian & June for this lovely experience of Scotish hospitality! Daniel & Marianne

A Place of tranquillity in a mad world, the House of Mark sits at the head of the beautiful Glenesk under the watchful gaze of Badadarrach, that’s the heather-clad hill that rises behind it, with the Water of Mark happily gurgling past the end of the garden.

The house, which was the manse, is most comfortably appointed, the rooms are spacious, comfortable and restful, and the home-cooked lemon drizzle cake in our room awaiting our arrival, was not only a delightful touch, but absolutely delicious – a subtle hint to the culinary delights to come.

Ian and June, our hosts, are kindness personified, from the warm welcome on arrival to our final ‘adieu’ (yes, not goodbye, we will definitely be back), nothing was too much trouble, even when we returned from a walk looking like drowned rats (yes, it can rain here too), our wet clothing was whisked away and dried for us.

Now, the food – well what can I say? There will be many a famous eating place would envy the quality of June’s scrumptious food. The full ‘Scottish’ breakfast was not only delicious, but could set you up for a day out in the surrounding hills pursuing your favourite activity, whether that be walking or fishing, mountain biking or photography (or even just sitting and enjoying the serenity of the place), until the evening meal. Breakfast is good, but dinner is a gastronomic delight – don’t come here on a diet, although I am quite sure June could rustle up something suitable and equally delectable. Everything is home-cooked on the Aga, and tastes out of this world.

There are no televisions - or mobile ‘phone signal, so you can really get away from it all. The only distractions are the guinnea fowl which have free reign over the garden and are real characters to watch and listen to (and their eggs end up in the delicious breakfasts), and the Red Squirrels which come in numbers to the bird table, strategically situated just outside the dining room window. There is no objection to bringing your camera to meals to capture these delightful creatures whilst the bicker and squabble over the right to a nut feeder.

To sum up?

Peaceful, Comfortable, Delightful, Homely are just a few of the adjectives that spring to mind. Not a place for the party animal or the shop-a-holic. A place to rest and re-charge the batteries, or to spend some time with the one you love.

Thank you Ian & June.
