“dirty, never again!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 February 2014

Stayed at Hof van Saksen about 6th times. This time the accommodation was really dirty. Despite the complaints we have left at the reception desk, this was not solved. They offered us a diner voucher but could not solve the nails we found under the matras, toothpaste spots in the bathroom, dirty bath tob, mould in the shower, spots on the mirror, dirty kitchen, spots on the table, chair and cupboards, spots on the stairs etc etc.
During our stay, we have written an e-mail with feedback. Now, 4 weeks after, still no reply whatsoever. They do not seem to appreciate their loyal customers. We will NOT come back.

The Hof van Saksen is a quaint but truly hypermodern spa & wellness park. The cottages and farm houses couldn't ooze a more charming Dutch atmosphere, it's sooo pretty. I have just advised this to some loved ones who could do with some R & R. The staff are extremely helpful and speak their languages impeccably. Kim at reception was especially helpful. Thank you team. I hope to come again soon.

We visited during a weekend with family. Homes are really nice, spacious and comfortable. Apart from the bathroom, which had a lot limescale on both the showerhad as the glass showerscreen, the hoe is also really clean. Service is good: our bathroom had a leak and this was fixed that same afternoon.

Diner at the park is really very good, and staff is very friendly. Though beware: it is rather pricey!

Nice bonus: we arrived during the Dutch "Sinterklaas" period, and the park had paid extra attention to this. Piet delivered a breakfast and there were a lot of activities with Pieten all over the park.

Really great location, superb facilities, great lake, brilliant pool and slide. Lovely helpful and friendly staff. Excellent indoor play facilities too. I am not sure my kids could have had a more fun time!

Parc itself was beautiful & clean, so nothing bad to say about that.
The houses however were very dark. Hardly any light comes through the low roofing which made it a little depressing even. We stayed in a luxury cottage with sauna for 4 people, yet I did not enjoy my time inside the house.
Little tip when booking: look at the pictures of the farms and choose one which doens't have a low ceiling. It impacts all these types.

Room Tip: Don't choose a house with low roofing! too dark inside!

We took the ferry from Hull to Rotterdam arriving around 09:00 we took our time travelling to the site as we knew we could not get into our accommodation until 15:00. The motorways were busy but once past Zwolle they quietened down a lot. We arrived at Hof Van Saksen around 14:45 and were directed to a car park, we were then in fluent English told where the reception was. After 5 minutes walk we arrived at the impressive building (the main one in the video) and went to reception. We were checked in very quickly and the lady explained how the key cards worked and that they were also the passes for the swimming. We went back to the car and drove it around to our accommodation (913). (You are allowed to drive your car on the camp to load and unload but have to return it to the car park afterwards, unless you have a disability in which case you can keep it near your house).

On entry we were greeted with a large hallway off which there was a toilet, a bedroom with en-suite wet room and a utility room which contained a washer and a dryer. The kitchen and lounge were also off the same hallway. Upstairs there was a bathroom with a separate shower, 2 toilets, 3 bedrooms and a sauna.
The accommodation was spotlessly clean. We also had a view over the lake, we paid an additional 17.50 to be near the centre this turned out to be a brilliant decision and one which I will repeat.

A walk around the park revealed it was perfectly flat with 2 small ponds and the large lake and well appointed supermarket and numerous restaurants and bars.

We ate in the Grand Café the first night which was a tad expensive and you need to ask for the burgers to be well done.
We went shopping in the supermarket the following day and got everything we needed. The prices were similar to everywhere else we have been to so it was not a shock.
If asked "wilt u een ontvangstbewijs?" they are asking " Do you want a receipt"
Over the week we cooked in the house and had lots of meals at Rapido
The staff at Rapido were very helpful in correcting my basic dutch - am sure I got a few extra chips for trying. The Chinese food was very nice and tasty. this place represented excellent value for money

The Edutainment programme had the children building rafts during the day and sailing them on the lake in the evening. they climbed the tower and had archery as well as 10 pin bowling.

The swimming pool requires the use of 20 cent coins (nonreturnable) for the lockers

If you want to save money there is a C1000 supermarket in nearby Rolde (3km away) where you can save quite a bit on the site prices (especially the beer)

There is a working windmill in Rolde, a nice small shopping centre in Assen (On Assen-Zuid) with a great little pub.
Further afield there is Kamp Westerborg or Veen Park and other places to go and visit

We had an excellent 10 days there with glorious sunshine on about 8 of them.
I would definitely come back here again and recommend it to anyone

Room Tip: Pay the extra 17.50 if you want a specific villa, look at the map and pay attention to where villas...

Hof van Saksen is a major upmarket vacation colony in the middle of the flat Drenthe countryside. The 'farms' consist mostly of 4 independent units with two bedrooms each. Our cottage was spotlessly clean, had ample space and a nice garden. It struck us how quiet the whole complex seemed, even during high season. This is, I suppose, a result of a very refined layout of the whole place.
As for the amenities, you can't get it much better. Everything is maintained to a very high standard. The whole complex indeed is clean, well kept, well run. From checkin till checkout, we couldn't fault it. It is somewhat geared towards parent with kids, with loads of activities (not all of the same quality however). The pool with it 'rapids' is awesome.
For parents, there's not all that much to see or do, apart from swimming and wellness. Or read a bok. Nearby countrytown Assen however is a nice break, or even better: the bustling studenttown of Groningen, just 30 minutes by car.
Our cottage had an old tube telly (a bit of a no go in 2013) but a replacement program with flatscreens was underway when we left, so that should be fixed in notime. We didn 't try out any of the restaurants, as they seemed somewhat generic - we used our kitchen for a change. The supermarket on the compound is extensive and charges regular Dutch prices.
All in all, kudo's to Hof van Saksen. Well run, clean, quiet. Booked outside of the high season, it is well worth the money.
