“Average B & B in a quiet setting”
Reviewed 10 January 2014 via mobile

My wife and I stayed here for six days in January 2014. We stayed in the Ocean Room, a quirkily decorated throwback to the 1970's, which included a shower head as a substitute for a bathroom sink faucet. The room itself opened out onto a beach area and had a nice outside sitting area. That said, the whole place seemed a bit worn. While the resident manager was very accommodating, he seemed to lack hospitality experience. If there was a problem, he fixed it, but there seemed to be little anticipation of guest needs, more reaction. Breakfasts were good, not great. The natural setting of this B & B is both an asset and a drawback -- the Key Deer viewing is up close and unsurpassed, the location is quiet and the nights are star-filled. But the small beach area is filled with seagrass which gave off considerable odor and when the wind was down the sand flies were pretty bad. The weed and the sand flies were not a problem for us, we are campers. And there is little or nothing that the owners can do about the flies or the odor -- it nature and cannot be removed.

If your ever in big pine key and you love that comfortable at home feeling you have to stay here... the rooms have an open air feeling and feel more like a small apartment in the tropics. The views are absolutely stunning and its one of the best breakfasts I've had on my trip... highly recommended!

Barnacles is located in a quiet area of beautiful Big Pine Key. It was fun to watch the key deer walk thru the small beach. The upper deck is a wonderful place to sit & relax anytime day or night. The beach was a perfect place to enjoy a bon fire. But you needed to find your own firewood.
Our room was clean & comfortable. Shower had good water pressure & ample hot water. This place should be advertised as a bed & brunch. Eric the current manager did not appear in the kitchen to start breakfast until 9 AM. So if you want breakfast and an early start to your day's activities this is not the place to stay. We learned to start the coffee maker ourselves.
This is a really a neat place. Hopefully the management will clean up the kitchen and pay more attention to small details like emptying the trash in guest room & kitchen area.

Paradise Lost
Years ago I would spend my vacation every year in the Keys at The Barnacle. The original Builders/Owners managed the property. The buildings were kept fresh and clean on the inside and the décor was interesting and tasteful. The grounds outside were beautifully landscaped and groomed. All amenities were functional and available. A usable boat ramp and dockage was part of the included features. The Owners could usually be found on site grooming the landscape or doing repairs. They took pride in the condition of the property. One of the daily chores was raking the beach and mounding the seaweed in a compost pile. This compost was used to enrich the landscape. I always looked forward to my stay at the Barnacle and felt welcome.

I recently decided to re visit the Barnacle and was very disappointed. The property looked tired and worn inside and out. The landscape had not been tended to in a long time. Most of the areas around the building looked like a junkyard. Crudely built storage buildings had been added to the front yard and piles of junk and building materials were stacked up next to the cottage. A Park model travel trailer had been added to the side yard as a permanent structure. As you enter the property you are greeted by at least 8 “No Trespassing” signs stapled to whatever was available and an old garden hose tangled around the entry wall. What was once a beautiful sandy beach was now a rocky shore covered in seaweed and a buildup of decomposed seaweed that smelled like a sewer. The inside of the main house and kitchen was grimy and smelled like an old Diner. I had booked the Cottage because that was my favorite room. Every surface felt greasy and smelled dirty. A generous buildup of dust and grime could be found on most horizontal surfaces. The once beautiful and interesting outdoor shower and bathroom was non functional and covered in decomposed foliage. The Private Garden Dining area was fenced off with Livestock wire and was strewn with debris. The owner decided to start the diesel tractor parked below the bedroom window and move a trailer around at 7am. I had asked about the boat ramp and dock space before I booked my stay and was told it was available. The boat ramp was no longer available and the dock was taken over by the owners boat.
After my visit I checked tripadvisor and found many negative comments interspaced with positive or excellent comments. I am somewhat confused with the combination of good and bad. Many of the positive entries seemed to include rebuttal comments to the prior negative entries. Sounds fishy.

I cannot comment on the traditional BnB breakfast because I did not participate due to the condition of the kitchen.

I feel that this facility could be brought back to the wonderful place it once was but it would take much time, expense and talent. I think that this wonderful place could be lost forever. I cannot recommend The Barnacle as a vacation choice.

Stayed here in October, what a great location! Enjoyed ourselves immensely, the key deer are
very interesting. Being served breakfast on the balcony every morning was wonderful, and star gazing from the roof top at night was amazing. Thank-you Eric!

This is the place to stay if you don't want to deal with the problems in Key west. It was quiet and secluded, yet convenient. We stayed her for 3 days in February 2013. The place isn't perfect, but it was clean and friendly. The worse part is the smell from the ocean weeds, but it's not there all the time, and it's the Keys, so it's acceptable. The food was great and the owners helpful

My wife and I spent our honeymoon at The Barnacle in July. Loved the place and the peace and quiet was another great perk. Eric and Tia made us feel very welcomed and made sure we had everything we needed. Eric is a great cook and breakfast was always an enjoyment too. We even met the owners (Eric's parents) and they were just as hospitable and welcoming as Eric and Tia. This was an amazing honeymoon. The kayaks, the bikes, the walking around and seeing parts of the island was perfect Seeing all the Key Deer was also a treat. Eric and Tia, thank you both so much for the great week!

Will try to get back down as soon as we can! There was only one downside. We stayed in the Cottage and I could not figure a way to get that mattress home with me. Haha. Those were the best night's sleep I have ever had, I think. Amazing!
