We looked forward to our stay for weeks. Looked at photos of the place several times and kept seeing ourselves down by the water with a couple of beers in hand watching the sunset. We stayed in a smaller cabin and it was nothing like the photos. The grounds were over grown and the outside sitting area was nasty. We listen to a dog bark ALL day and night. Room smelled musty and carpet dirty. Bed was very uncomfortable....lots of springs. There was a coffee pot in the room, yet the cream was chunky. The coffee brewing did make the room smell good awhile. We walked next door to Pirates Cove and it was a huge difference appearance. Mermaid Landing has a For Sale on the front and it seems the owners has no interest in keeping it up :(

I spent 5 days in Cedar Key, staying at Mermaids Landing. It's exactly what I was looking for. No crowds, no one in the room over head, and no elevators. Just a pleasant walk through the natural lawn full of flowers and fruit trees, and right into a quaint cabin. This one was right on the water, so I could step right out the back door ,and cast a line!! This cabin is small, but host all the essentials needed for a pleasant stay. I was able to sun bath privately, fish, and canoe right from the cabin!!! I must confess the cabins and porch could use a little sprucing up, but nothing that would keep me from a return visit. Actually, I can see returning for many visits!! Cedar Key is a very different place! You'll either love it, or hate it!! I love it!!

We've stayed at Mermaids Landing for a second time. These are older cabins with a lot of character. The nine cabins are located right on Rte. 24 and there are many options to select from. My husband and I like the two double bed cabin with the back porch that looks out onto the water. This has an eat in kitchen with microwave, stove and full fridge, cable TV and window air conditioning. Our son stayed in the cabin right on the water with a full kitchen and queen bed. There is a deck right outside that they enjoyed their morning coffee and evening drinks on. Make no mistake, this is a place that is low key, where you can sit back, relax and watch the tide come in and out and all the birds, sea creatures etc. We even saw a flock of pink spoonbills which we had never seen before. There are outside grills for cooking and even horse shoes, but it is rustic so if you are looking for a modern resort with a swimming pool etc. this is not for you. But we love it. Only 1/2 mile to down town which you can walk, and small Mom and Pop restaurants withing walking distance for breakfast/lunch.

Room Tip: Check out the website. If you're not planning on doing any cooking, just want a microwave, smal...

I recently spent a week at Mermaids Landing. They are a series of 9 cottages with water frontage overlooking the tidal flats. Several of the cottages have water views and one is right on the water. The cottages are simple with basic amenities like fridge and stoves and air conditioning for the hot summer weather in Florida. Some are small for single or couple and several are multi room affairs that give a feeling of a small home with outdoor patios or decks. They are very well priced in the high 50 to mid 70 range which is quite remarkable for what they offer. I have stayed in several other places in Cedar Key ( because it is such a charming out of the way place) and most are 90 to 100 plus per night. The cottages are about 1/3 of a mile from the little village of Cedar Key so you can walk it and the Blue Desert Cafe is a block away for a great meal and funky atmosphere. There is a pizza burger joint right across the street and 2 blocks toward town is the gas station which has an open air veggie market that also sells fresh seafood. Annie' s Cafe And Kona Joe's are 3 blocks away and great for breakfast and lunch.
The owner Kathy is very friendly and tries to make you stay as pleasant as possible. She has a few bikes and the rooms have TVs and DVD players and she has a ton of movies available along with books she has collected over the years. I think her place warrants a visit and Cedar Key is a different taste of Florida. It ain't Daytona or Fort Lauderdale. It's a funky small town tucked away from everywhere on the Gulf Coast where you can fish, bird watch, kayak, hike and talk to the local clammers (where clams are grown right here in great abundance - 9 bucks for 24 at Pelican Railroad) or to the town residents who fell in love with the place many years ago and never left....

Room Tip: Cottages 3 4 5 have water views with 4 being right on the water for close to 70 bucks. It has a huge...

Mermaids Landing was perfect for our relaxed romantic weekend away from work and kids! Nine different cabins to choose from, very quiet, and low key. Within easy walking distance to shops and restaurants. We'll definitely be returning again and again.

One reviewer wrote that it seemed like staying here was like being in Florida in the 1940s...that's the point! If you want 2014 style accommodations please don't stay here; if you want quaint, rustic, unique, cozy, etc. then this is your place! Cottage #4 is right on the bay with a deck and unbelievable views! Cottage #9 has the best kitchen for cooking and huge screened porch. You won't need your car as just about everything is within walking or biking distance...get some exercise and take in Cedar Key like it's meant to be: slowly...enjoy!

Mermaid's Landing is right off the keys and a lovely little nesting of rustic cottages. Cathy is super nice and we had a fantastic time. This is not the Four Seasons; it's a quiet, relaxing escape from the day to day grind. The price is half what you'd pay at Fenimore Mill. It is a 5 minute drive to the Cedar Key waterfront/beach area. Had a blast!

Room Tip: We stayed in cottage 5. All cottages are close to the water.
