Shell Mound

A perfect place to get out and enjoy nature with out too much of a walk. The trails were clean well marked. You'll see a lot of fiddler crabs, birds and marshes. The mounds are incredible. It was a great place to walk our dogs.

A wonderful place for birding, or just enjoying the views of the marshes. The boardwalk is beautifully constructed and the signage interesting.

Small little trail with some beautiful views. Just not very long but we liked seeing a historical area.

This little campground is a perfect spot to stage your fishing/sightseeing of the Cedar Key area via water. It is located in the middle of 2 National Wildlife Refuges, the Shell Mound Unit of Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge and the to Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge. The actual shell mound is part of the former, and is right down the road from the county park. The actual park has a boat launch, bathrooms, water, a dock, a trail out to the sound, and campsites, all within about 100 yards of each other. Campsites are nice and shaded on sand pads. It is perfect for a weekend of exploring the area in a canoe, kayak, or shallow-draft boat. The maze of channels through the many islands provides a fisherman's and paddler's paradise. A 20 minute paddle and you realistically might not see another person the rest of the day. Be sure and bring a GPS if you go farther away, as the backwater channels can get you confused, and this is coming from a geographer! You can paddle out to Suwannee Sound if you like to open water, and you will find yourself about 7 miles south of the mouth of the Suwannee River, and about 4 miles North of Ceder Key. You can paddle out to one of the many little keys and have a little private beach all to yourself for the day. Stock up before you get there so you can enjoy your time while you're there. Cedar Key is a short 15 or so minute drive away for provisions, although a little pricey. Florida as it looked before development. A gem of a spot.
