Stayed there with my wife and 2 small kids last week of Jan. 2010. Having read all the previous reviews of Mystic Dunes, I was apprehensive about staying there. I'm glad to say that the place was not nearly as bad as the reviewers made it out to be, in fact, it was quite satisfactory.
Our 2 bedroom unit was spacious, with a washer and dryer (a must with 2 small kids under 5), a screened in balcony with a view of the fountains and pool, and a large whirlpool tub in the master suite. Kitchen came equipped with all the usual stuff you need to cook. Unit was decently clean, with the exception that my wife discovered a large live cockroach in the kitchen a few days before we left, which skeezed her out (where there is one, there are many). The resort provided a high chair and pack 'n play portable crib upon request, and within an hour replaced the first pack 'n play, which was broken, with a working one.
The resort staff was courteous, professional, and prompt in helping us. It took less than 5 minutes to check in and I never waited more than 5 minutes at the front desk to speak to someone. Our friends and their kids also stayed at Mystic Dunes, and they were able to accommodate us by getting us 2 units side by side, which made our stay more enjoyable. Our friends used the heated pool and found it to be fine. The grounds were well maintained. We did not golf or use the resort amenities much, except for ordering room service from the resort pizza hut, which was prompt and the food was fine.
The resort is very close to the disney parks, about a 10 minute drive, and maybe 15-20 minutes from Sea World. While not means a luxury resort, it was spacious, clean, and gave us plenty of room for the kids. The second bedroom had 2 queen sized beds, so there's plenty of space.
A couple of cons: second bathroom bathtub's drain was very slow. So was our shower stall's drain, again slow. The wine openers were cheap and broke when we tried to use them to uncork a bottle of wine, the plus was the resort did not charge us for this. Another con is that there is no mid-weekly cleaning included in the price of the stay; instead, you have to pay for it if you want it. Most timeshares we have stayed at include at least one cleaning during the weak. Also, and this is very minor, but they provided single ply toilet paper, which was not the best to use. Also, our mattress was lumpy and had an indentation in the middle, so it was not the most comfortable mattress to sleep on.
There was no pressure to attend a time share presentation (maybe because we were staying there through a time share swap).
Overall, we had the feeling that Mystic Dunes had started out as an idea on a grand scale, but then something went wrong along the way, they were forced to cut corners, which resulted in a decent, adequate resort, but nothing that will knock your socks off if you are used to staying in the higher end places.
