“Nice place to stay!”
Reviewed 7 June 2010

We have been a Marriott customer for many years and we have stayed at many of their facilities and this one is a typical Marriott, nice place to stay. The only disappointment is the walk/shuttle across the street for the beach access. We like being on the beach but it is quite a ways away from the hotel. Besides that, the place is highly recommended for the pool and boardwalk is lovely.

Our stay at the Marriott Sand Key was fabulous. From the front desk staff to the bellmen, the service was exceptional during our two night stay. My husband and I were there for our anniversary and the hotel delivered a complimentary bottle of champagne to our room on our first night . We were there over Memorial Day weekend and the hotel was full, yet they were able to check us in early at 10:00am which allowed us to have another full beach/pool day. We got a room on the 10th floor, which we requested in advance. It was well decorated and the decor did not appear old, as some other reviews mentioned. The view from our bed overlooking the intercoastal waterway was exceptional. I recommend requesting a room on the side of the hotel that does not overlook the pool. Our room did not, and below our balcony was nothing but water. Due to the holiday weekend, the pool area was exceptionally crowded with families. However, we spent most of our time at the beach which is a quick 5 minute walk from the hotel or you can take the free shuttle. The hotel provides you with all the beach/pool towels you want and bottled water to take with you. They even have some beach chairs and toys that are first come, first serve. Sand Key is just over the bridge from Clearwater Beach proper. We liked it because it was away from all the crowds and the chaos of Clearwater, but easily accessible by car or a longer walk if you want to hit up the bars, restaurants, and touristy stuff. I highly recommend the hotel for a family vacation or a romantic weekend away (as long as you don't mind having kids around).

My fiancee and I stayed at the Marriott Suites on Sand Key for three weeks. We have stayed in Clearwater and on Sand Key before, so we know the surrounding area pretty well, however, this holiday topped every preceding one purely because of the Marriott Suites. The accommodation was very comfortable and relatively spacious. Our rooms were located on the top floor, as far away from the lifts as is possible, which helped to ensure that there was very little noise from passing guests. The bedroom had two Queen size beds and the view across the Intercostal Waterway was fabulous. The bathroom, although not very big, was adequate. The living room was well equipped with micro wave, coffee maker, wet bar and refrigerator. There was a large television in both the bedroom and the living room. The rooms were kept beautifully clean for the duration of our stay, the coffee maker was replenished daily and the beds were turned down every night.
The reception staff could not have been more kind and helpful. When they found that we were to be married they sent a bottle of wine (our favourite) and cheese and biscuits up to the room. Nothing was too much trouble for them, they were always friendly and cheerful.
The pool area was well stocked with loungers, which each had a plastic covered sponge mattress, which made them very comfortable. Towels were provided and could be easily replaced when they got too wet. The pool is heated and the pool surrounds were always immaculate.
Each day we left our car in the very capable hands of the car valet staff, who were always cheerful and ready to please. A bottle of nicely cold water was offered to us every time we left the hotel, a nice touch.
The only down side to our stay was the hotel restaurant, 'Watercolours'. We had eaten there on a previous holiday and we had been disappointed, nevertheless we determined to give them a second try this year. The boast of this restaurant is that they are the best steak house in the area. Sadly this turned out to be unsupported by our experience. The food was only passable and it was expensive, almost double the cost of what we considered to be a much better meal served at the Beachcomber Restaurant on Mandalay Avenue on Clearwater Beach. The air conditioning was extremely aggressive, when we asked for it to be modulated we were initially told that the adjustment that had been made would take some time to take effect. After some interval, during which my arms were breaking out in goose pimples, we were then informed that the air conditioning settings could not be changed. It seemed that someone was being economical with the truth!
This did not however spoil our overall experience on the holiday, we just avoided that restaurant for the next three weeks, which was easy to do, there are numerous good, and some great, places to eat in the vicinity of Sand Key, of which we took advantage.

Upon arrival, they screwed up our reservation by cancelling the two nights we booked by E-Certificate. We statyed for a total of 5 nights. It took the front desk supervisor (a guy) more half an hour to check us in and he decided that I have to call the bank myself. It took me more than one hour from calling the credit card company, reservation, to customer service..etc. Then the end result was the hotel still has to take care of it. It was very stressful esp traveling with a baby since early morning. But they gave us free internet for the entire stay plus a phone call, a card, and fruit and cheese platter to apologize for the mixed up. They tried to send some breakfast and spa vouchers but we never got them. I wished they would have follow up by phone call (they did it by email bc I sent the request by email) like they follow up if the room's fixed when there's a problem. Upon checking out, they gave us a voucher for the next stay. All the staff were so pleasant except male front desk supervisor. Never saw a smile on his face for the entire stay. He ever forgot to sent the baby crib even thought we requested earlier. I feel bad for the other hotel staff. Sandy at the front desk was very nice and tried to calm me down when we were having problem checking in. Beside from this, everything else was great. The pool, poolside games, babysitting service, tiki bar, night time cinemas...etc. The room is a little dated but not bad at all. We did have problem with the frig and the door to the balcony but they came to fix it very promptly upon request. Besides the hickups, we had fun...this is the first time our 7 months baby's went in the swimming pool and she started crawling on this trip. She loved it! We would come back again.

I used 60K points for a two night stay... choosing this property over the Hilton that's just north at Clearwater Beach. Overall I gave it three stars, but this could vary greatly depending on what you're looking for. Here's my take

Cons:
- There isn't a beach immediately at the resort. The Sand Key Beach is 600 yards away which isn't bad. However, this beach in my opinion is inferior to clearwater beach which is 5 minutes ($1.75 trolley) up the road. This shouldn't be a knock on the hotel, but you should research which beach is better for you.
- I'm generally not a fan of outdoor entries to rooms. It gives the place a motel feel, However, the rooms aren't bad themselves, just the entry ways.

Pros:
- Great amenities which I feel make up for the outdoor entries. Fresh beach towels and water bottles for the beach. Two LG flat screen tv's per room, with PC hookup/cable provided.
- Staff is extremely helpful and pleasant. I've stayed in 100+ Marriotts/Hiltons and never before have I had the check-in person come around the desk to hand me my keys.
- Quality toiletries. May not matter to some, but my GF loved it.
- Each room has a private balcony with a water view.

Overall, good property. I'd stay here again, but if you're looking for a beach out door this place isn't it.

Just returned from 10 days at the Marriott on Sand Key - the hotel is ideally situated if you prefer to be away from the crowds as it is a 5 minute drive from Clearwater Beach. It is on the intercoastel side so no beach on site but a fantasic pool area. There were plenty of sun loungers on the pool deck and the hotel provides poolside towels which staff place out every morning. If you want to change your towel during the day simply take the dirty one back to the Tikki hut and get a fresh one -simples! There is also complimentary chilled water at the Tikki hut should you not want to use the bar (there is a Starbucks in the lobby area and their soft drinks are slightly cheaper than from the bar - also Dunkin Donuts along the boardwalk whose coffee is not only better but cheaper too!) Staff around the pool handed out chilled grapes and melon and would take food/drink orders and deliver right to your lounger - heaven! The hotel also provide a range of pool toys for both the adults and the children to use. The pool area does get very busy at weekends as the hotel fills up and they also allow non guests to pay and use their facilities. Just over the road is Sand Key Park accessible either by car or buggy from the hotel. Toilets/drinks on site and a great place to watch the sun as it appears to disappear into the sea. Even on weekends there is plenty of room for everyone (not a crowded as Clearwater Beach but is obviously without the all facilities found there).Public areas of the hotel are spotless and it is also a popular venue with the locals for weddings and parties. The only negative was the room - the carpet was really dirty - walking around after showering would leave us with black feet so wear some mules in the room, also the patio doors onto the balcony were very hard to open. Not sure how long this has been a Marriott but the room didn't seem to be at quite the same standard we have experienced before. On a positive note the 'suite' style room provided ample room for a family of three. We didn't eat in the hotel but had breakfast at Maggie Maes on the boardwalk which was excellent - can also highly recommend the deli/grocery store at the far end of the boardwalk - the Boars Head - have a Cuban sandwich easily enough for two adults and simply delicious. The ladies who work there could not be more welcoming and friendly. Also ate at Backwaters right at the end of the boardwalk - food was excellent - try the chocolate pudding! Clearwater Beach itself is lovely and Pier 60 comes to life at night with craftspeople selling their wares - plenty of eateries - can recommend Crabby Bills at the marina and also Cooters (their gator tails bites were great) usual assortment of shops selling t shirts/souveniers etc. Whilst here visit the Clearwater Marine Aquarium and take a trip on Captain Memos pirate ship both excellent value for money. There are a number of malls within striking distance and if you visit the Premium Outlet mall at Ellenton you cross the Sunshine Skyway bridge which is very impressive. Throw in a day at Busch Gardens and you will probably have ticked every box. Would I recommend this hotel - yes definately - even more so if you are combining time over in Orlando at the theme parks with a trip to Clearwater Beach - it is a perfect place to rest and recover!

We stayed at the Marriott Clearwater beach for a week after a stay over in Orlando and visit to the Magic Kingdom. On arrival we were a little nervous as the pool area was slightly more condensed than we thought and very busy. We later found out that there were two weddings at the hotel that evening hence the crowd. Once the weekend was out of the way we found things died down considerably and we loved being by the pool and in the clean, cool communal areas of the hotel. The Starbucks on site was very welcome for a nice english tea in the morning! We found the food and drinks at the hotel quite expensive and decided to head to the local supermarket for breakfast and lunch supplies which suited us and our 19 month old well. We didn't eat at the hotel because we only wanted casual dining and it didn't offer a lot in this respect. Again, the drinks were pricey and 'happy hour' didn't exactly offer tantilizing delas. Our suite on the 9th floor was large and well kept although we were a little disappointed not to have cutlery or crockery but we managed to get some from the restaurant 'unofficially'! The views were amazing from both the front door and the balcony which was directly over the sea, stunning! We even saw dolphins and rays swimming directly in the sea outside of the hotel. The suite had two 42" plasma tv's and a lounge area which was very practical. The bathroom was just the righth size and well equipped, no shower problems here. Our daughter loved the macaw in reception and went to see her everyday shouting 'burb' (bird in her language!). The pool area turned out to be just right with wonderful waterfalls and towels provided. Plenty of parking on site too. The staff were very friendly and helpful and always there when needed. We loved our stay here and would definitely visit again.
