My wife and I spent a fantastic day on Clearwater Beach-- simply a brilliant, huge, white sand beach-- and were looking for a place to grab a late lunch and some drinks. Frenchy's looks like one of those older, beach-themed places that hang on decade after decade in so many beach towns. It's right on the beach (though Clearwater Beach is a very "wide" beach so don't picture Frenchy's as being particularly near the water itself). We shrugged and took our chances, not expecting much since so many places like this rely on location alone to lure (alas, often non-repeat) tourists.
We were pleasantly surprised. The interior is pretty dark and rustic, but friendly and clean enough. There's lots of outdoor seating which of course was very popular on this nice day.
Our very pregnant server-- I wish I recalled her name-- was outstanding. Genuinely friendly and helpful, just a sweetheart. When we asked about the local grouper, she suggested we get the battered and fried grouper nuggets they have as an appetizer-- she'd hold our actual order until we formed our opinion. They came out quickly, and we liked them quite a lot, though we opted for different dishes for our main courses. My wife got fried shrimp-- fresh and huge, and accompanied by a portion of fresh and tasty fruit. I was hankering for a simple burger, and it was also fresh and well cooked, served on an onion roll with decent fries. (The burger was nothing to write home about, but competent-- fair enough for beef in a seafood place.)
The tropical mixed drinks, large and potent, were very reasonably priced at $6.50 apiece.
All in all just the sort of casual beach dining experience we were hoping for. We'd be happy to go back.
TIP: There's a municipal parking lot RIGHT next to Frenchy's with self-pay kiosks where you pay $1.25 per hour for parking and post the ticket on your windshield (those with handicapped decals park free). The lot seemed to fill up by about noon on the beautiful Saturday we were there and many people were hawking for spots all afternoon. (We got there around 10:15 and there were still plenty of spaces.) There's a public rest room right there off the lot, and direct access to the beach, where we easily rented an umbrella and two beach chairs for $20 for the day. (These, too, seemed to fill up by around noon.) All in all a great day at a lovely beach.
TIP #2: There's a huge CVS drug store across the street from Frenchy's (maybe a block away). It sells everything you'd possibly need for a day at the beach. We bought beach towels and a beach bag there. They even sell a decent selection of wine.
