In May 2013 my husband and I stayed at the Clarion Inn & Suites [FL321] in Clearwater, FL. We had always relied on Choice Hotels for consistently top quality accomodations and have been very satisfied in the past.
Last year, we stayed at this hotel and while our experience was good, everyone else seemed to be unhappy. We didn't think anything about it until we stayed there again in May 2013. It appears that the complaints were right all along...
This Clarion Inn and Suites was one of the worst places we have ever stayed.
When we arrived there was a scamble to see which rooms were ready for check-in. (Apparently there were not enough housekeepers.) They eventually found a room for us and we brought our luggage up there. When we got into the room, it REEKED OF OLD/STALE CIGARETTE SMOKE! It was horrible, and there was no way we’d be able to stay there, so we called the front desk. They tried to tell us that “the entire hotel is non-smoking” which was obviously not true.
A friend of ours was also staying at this hotel, and his room was even worse then ours and also REEKED OF CIGARATTE SMOKE. However, he opted to stay in his room rather than move to another.
When we told the front desk that we could NOT stay in the room they gave us, they found us another one and we dragged our luggage there. This was a handicapped room and smelled strongly of chlorine! We were so tired by this time, that we decided to stay anyway.
The room was old, poorly painted, and looked shabby. The showerhead was weak and made bathing nearly impossible. The A/C was loud and noisy and did a poor job of keeping the temperature down. (That night, we had the A/C set as low as it would go and it barely maintained to keep the room cool.) Neither I nor my husband got a good night’s sleep. Nor did our friend in his room.
The following morning, the three of us walked down to the hotel’s Breakfast Buffet for the “complimentary” breakfast. It was disgusting! The food was unappetizing and looked poorly prepared. It’s was if the hotel was trying to drive the guests away by making everything as unappetizing as possible, thereby keeping the food costs down.
What was truly gross was watching the manager (?) washing the silverware – he would grab one, dip it in a pitcher of water, wipe it off with a common towel, wrap it in a napkin, and then put it out for the guests to use. That’s not only disgusting, it’s also unhealthy! My husband (who used to manage restaurants) said that if the Health Dept were to see that, they would close the place down!
We refused to eat at the Breakfast Buffet. When we asked at the front desk about a nearby Perkins, the woman actually chuckled as if we weren’t the only ones at the hotel asking the same question. In fact, Perkins was packed. Could there have been other guests from the hotel eating there?
We will NEVER stay at this hotel again and will be sure to warn our friends and family.
We understand that many hotels are indepedently owned, but whoever is certifying the hotels for the Choice Hotel name is not doing their job.
