Clarion Inn & Suites
Ranked #57 of 98 Hotels in Clearwater
Reviewed 31 May 2013

In May 2013 my husband and I stayed at the Clarion Inn & Suites [FL321] in Clearwater, FL. We had always relied on Choice Hotels for consistently top quality accomodations and have been very satisfied in the past.

Last year, we stayed at this hotel and while our experience was good, everyone else seemed to be unhappy. We didn't think anything about it until we stayed there again in May 2013. It appears that the complaints were right all along...

This Clarion Inn and Suites was one of the worst places we have ever stayed.

When we arrived there was a scamble to see which rooms were ready for check-in. (Apparently there were not enough housekeepers.) They eventually found a room for us and we brought our luggage up there. When we got into the room, it REEKED OF OLD/STALE CIGARETTE SMOKE! It was horrible, and there was no way we’d be able to stay there, so we called the front desk. They tried to tell us that “the entire hotel is non-smoking” which was obviously not true.

A friend of ours was also staying at this hotel, and his room was even worse then ours and also REEKED OF CIGARATTE SMOKE. However, he opted to stay in his room rather than move to another.

When we told the front desk that we could NOT stay in the room they gave us, they found us another one and we dragged our luggage there. This was a handicapped room and smelled strongly of chlorine! We were so tired by this time, that we decided to stay anyway.

The room was old, poorly painted, and looked shabby. The showerhead was weak and made bathing nearly impossible. The A/C was loud and noisy and did a poor job of keeping the temperature down. (That night, we had the A/C set as low as it would go and it barely maintained to keep the room cool.) Neither I nor my husband got a good night’s sleep. Nor did our friend in his room.

The following morning, the three of us walked down to the hotel’s Breakfast Buffet for the “complimentary” breakfast. It was disgusting! The food was unappetizing and looked poorly prepared. It’s was if the hotel was trying to drive the guests away by making everything as unappetizing as possible, thereby keeping the food costs down.

What was truly gross was watching the manager (?) washing the silverware – he would grab one, dip it in a pitcher of water, wipe it off with a common towel, wrap it in a napkin, and then put it out for the guests to use. That’s not only disgusting, it’s also unhealthy! My husband (who used to manage restaurants) said that if the Health Dept were to see that, they would close the place down!

We refused to eat at the Breakfast Buffet. When we asked at the front desk about a nearby Perkins, the woman actually chuckled as if we weren’t the only ones at the hotel asking the same question. In fact, Perkins was packed. Could there have been other guests from the hotel eating there?

We will NEVER stay at this hotel again and will be sure to warn our friends and family.

We understand that many hotels are indepedently owned, but whoever is certifying the hotels for the Choice Hotel name is not doing their job.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else - there are other hotels nearby.

I stay at this hotel for two to five nights per month and have always been completely satisfied. The staff, from management to housekeeping, could not be more pleasant or helpful. For a satisfying meal, you don't have to drive anywhere. The food has always been abundant and most satisfying. In the Tampa Bay area look no further than this Clarion - you will be happy that you did.

Room Tip: For a few dollars more the suites are excellent.

We stayed for 2 nights with my daughter's sports team. I upgraded my room to a suite (therefore was in the main building w/ an interior door) and was glad I did. Based on another TripAdvisor member's review of room 389 being spacious and with a nice balcony and view of the pool, this is the room I asked for and this is the room I got. A big shout out and "thanks" to Carmen & Tina at the front desk who not only accommodated my room request but were very helpful w/ several things during my stay. The room was clean and very large--LR had lots of furniture and still a lot of open floor space, table/chairs to eat at plus desk, granite counter w/ bar sink, small fridge, micro and lots of cupboards. The bedroom had 2 Queen Sleepnumber beds, lots of drawer space, a granite vanity/dressing area and large closet that was separate from the tub/toilet. A huge balcony was accessed by two doors and had a nice pool view and being on the 3rd floor there was no noise issue. There is room for some upgrading (chipped molding, front door and balcony door "broken", carpet sort of old-looking) but bed, linens and pillows were extremely fresh and comfortable. I was not thrilled w/ the "free" breakfast but when something is included, I cannot be picky! The scrambled eggs were fresh (as opposed to the liquid scrambled eggs many hotels serve in the free breakfast buffet), but the corned beef hash looked like a big can opened, heated and served. There was self-serve toast, Danish and canned fruit cocktail (no fresh fruit to grab and go) and several cereal choices. All in all, an "OK" buffet and it was included, so no complaints. We slept in on Sunday and went down for coffee at 11 a.m. and it was put away! Not crazy about that, as I think coffee should be available for guests all day, especially paying a Suite price. The pool and laundry facilities were fantastic. Families w/ young kids will enjoy the very large pool deck plus a "kiddie pool" with little fountains in addition to the big pool. There is a bar/restaurant on site, serving in the evening, but we never used it. The property is situated near lots of shopping, restaurants and main roads that take you anywhere you need to go. Stay here with confidence.

Room Tip: All 2 bed rooms have exterior doors and are in a 2-story building behind the main building. It is v...

Hotel is located near restaurants and shops and about 10 minutes from Clearwater Beach. Rooms are OK. Ours was clean and we have nothing to complain about. Staff was nice when we got there for our check-in. We enjoyed having a hot breakfast every morning, at least we didnt have to go eat out every morning. There were cereals, fruits, bread, milk, juices, coffee, pancakes, bacon, potatoes and eggs. Pretty much everything we can usually eat. It's true, breakfast staff is not very friendly... but hey, just eat and leave. No big deal. So overall, if you want to be close to the beach and shops and have free breakfast, Clarion is a good choice for the price.

This is our second stay at the Clarion and our last. We reserved our room 6 weeks in advanced. We asked for a specific room and assured we would get the room. When we arrived the room was given away. We were given a room in the back next to a young girls sports team. Beside spending a evening listening to girls running the corridor none we had to crawl on the floor the plug in lamps and go to the front desk for toilet paper and bath towels. When we told the front desk of our complaints we were given an attitude. We changed hotels first thing in the morning.

Where do I start? I stayed here for about 5 nights during my week long vacation and it was rough. The staff was rude and when I called to the front desk to let them know the toilet was unable to flush and was over flowing, they told me a maintence workwr will arrive in a few minutes so my five year old could use the bathroom.( a maintenance worker arrived in an hour.)
Moved to 'nicer' suite due to the issue and this suite had red stains on the carpet, the shower curtain was ripped off and there is an extra unknown charge on my credit card. Unbelievable.
