“Loving this place.”
Reviewed 22 June 2013

This is my 4th time in the last 3 years going to the Kings Bay Lodge. This time when I went I brought my 2 sisters and their boyfriend's. They stayed in Room 12 & 16. We have request room 15 for the last 3 yrs. Its close to the Pool and the Fishing Docks. We used the Covered Patio for the 1st time this year to have a cookout with the family. While there we have already made plans to come back next year for a week and not just 4 days. While there for the 4 days we more less had the place to ourself. It was quite and no one to splash you with the cold water. We enjoy that there is walking distance to other water parks and places to walk to and from for dinner.
We did not have to pay to see the Manatees they were at the end of the Docks swimming around. Kids were so excited to see them. The kids also fished in the pool and caught little fish . The owner said if we lost the hook we would have to get it for the safety of other swimmers.

Kings Bay Lodge is one of those places that people will either 1) really like or 2) think is an old dump. My wife and I are in the "really like" category and would definitely stay here again if in the area. The place is an old motor court motel that was likely built in the 60's or 70's. The motel consists of two one-story cinder-block buildings with a looped driveway and a pretty landscaped area between them. You park directly in front of your room. The west end of the property is Kings Bay waterfront and there is a boat dock there where you can moor your boat (if you have one - we didn't). Check-in was quick and the hotel manager, although not overly friendly, was friendly enough and got the job done. Our room was a very large (approx 450 square feet?) efficiency with a kitchen, dressing area, and bathroom with a shower. The room was equipped with a California King bed, sofa, two recliners, end tables, full size dresser, kitchen table and chairs, a TV, full size refrigerator, and lots of other stuff that looked like it was from the 80's. The refrigerator was rusty and the furniture was very dated and a bit worn but the room was perfectly clean and comfortable. There was a slight mold/mildew smell in the room but that might have been because it was raining most of the time we were here - I'm guessing this would go away if you could air the place out a bit. The hot water heater worked great and there was lots of pressure in the shower. The area between the buildings is landscaped and has beautiful oak trees with Spanish moss - there is also a metal covered canopy there with picnic tables and grills. A natural pool is located adjacent to the bay - this is essentially a walled off area that has a small opening that allows water (and fish) to flow in and out of the bay - it was pretty neat but it was too cold for us to try. Although it was an older place, we definitely liked the place. If you are one of those people that must have "new" everything and a continental breakfast this place is probably NOT the place for you. But if you like vintage and unique places with character that are a great value and located in a beautiful place, you should like Kings Bay Lodge. A clean and comfortable large room with a kitchen, located in a unique and beautiful location, and all for $70 a night made this a great place for us.

I would like to Thank , You, and all the other travelers for the "Good" Reviews that ya'll have posted to this web-site. I really do appreciate the "Positive" reviews, & the "Constructive Critiscisms" from you all. That being said, I would like to also say that for "All" the Negative Reviews that have been posted, I would like it to be known, that I took the "Lodge" over on June 21st of 2010. When my Husband & I took the job, we knew that we had a Lot of Hard Work ahead of us, which takes Time & Money, a Lot of Money, which comes from the Occupancy of the Motel. We have to coordinate Repairs with not only the Guests stay, but with our "Budget" as well. There are quite a few "Negative" reviews dated before my time, & some after my arrival, I would like to point out that if these people have a problem, no matter how small, if they "Let Me Know at the time it happens or on their way out, I can do something about it right then, to try to compensate for or "Fix" the problem, instead of Posting a Negative Review, they may have been able to post a "Positive" review. Thank You to Each & Every "Review", Especially the "Good" ones, We are Striving to make "Kings Bay Lodge" the #1 place to stay in Crystal River, and fyi, we have "Several" "Upgraded" Rooms NOW, and, Eventually, They will All, Be Upgraded! Thank You, and Please, Ya'll Come Back Now, Ya Hear!!!!!

We had a fantastic time enjoying Kings Bay and visiting Crystal River and Three Sisters Spring. We saw lots of manatee and enjoyed the lodges natural pool. The room we stayed in was worn, but we ran into an owner of another room who assured us that this is not the case for the other rooms.

I will leave this review based on room #10, it was fantastic. As others write when you pull in your not quite sure what to expect since they haven't done much with the outside of this old Fl hotel. We wanted a king size bed and that is what #10 had as well as room to relax in and be very comfortable. The bed was a little soft/warn but the room was so comfortable after a day long motorcycle ride we were happy with what we paid for. The pool at this time of year wasn't as great as the pics show but they may have not skimmed off the top due to the season but had it been like the pics we would have tried it, quite fascinating w/ the old Fl Pool. I would read the reviews carefully and specifically ask for a room that others have reviewed. Though a great kitchen was available in the unit no coffee was provided which meant that we had to walk to the little gas station a blk away in the morning to start our day. there was no shampoo or hair dryer but thank god for soap! :) If these units are generally rented on long term basis it would be nice if management offered a little basket filled with those little things for 1 nighters. I would definitely stay again, great location to Rainbow Springs St Park and other area interests.

Room Tip: Room #10, clean, spacious, and king bed! Very Comfortable! A/C quite and worked great!

I consider myself a hotel snob. I'm a stickler with things being clean and smell fresh. For a place on the water, this was ok. It wasn't fancy. When you pull up, your initial reaction is that it's just an old motel. Each room is individually owned so they are decorated and kept up with differently. We had Unit 2. The green satin bed sheet told me the owner of this particular room, probably passed away in the 70's. This room needed A LOT of upgrade. The bed was like sleeping on a box spring. The "pull out mattress" was even worse. After talking to the office staff about the mattresses, she insisted that everyone just LOVES that mattress. If they are Fred and Wilma Flintstone, then I can believe that. The stove and fridge were new ... and the kitchen was fully stocked. The only thing we needed to bring to use it were some paper towels. There is a nice meeting area in the middle, where they have grills, tables and fans. We brought our own grill. I wish the upkeep on the rooms was as good as the upkeep on the pavilion and surrounding garden area. The pool is a natural spring. A wonderful and refreshing 72 degrees all year round. There is a large slide next to the spring. This slide needs some upkeep, as the rails at the top are very loose. Also, please know that the tide in the spring, will go out with the river, as there is a little hole in the pool that allows fish to come in and out of the pool and the tide will go in and out. My daughter had a BLAST fishing in the pool. She caught SEVERAL catfish that we released. It's also nice to have floating docks to pull your boat or jet ski's up too and you can park them right there at the lodge.

There is a bar/restaurant across the water way called "Crackers" .. it seems to be popping on the weekends. If you sit by the "pool" in the evenings, you can hear the music from Crackers. There is also a wonderful ice cream shop across the water way too. Both places have "boat parking" if you didn't want to get in your car and drive.

Over all, I would stay here again - but I would request room number 6. My brother stayed in room number 6 and it was the most updated room, with the better bed and more room. Another unit my sister stayed in was number 20 ... and it was also decent, but Unit 6 is the best unit in my opinion. Avoid number 2 like the plague, unless you want a good laugh at the decor and be the joke of the weekend, as it looks like an adult movie was filmed in there from the 70's haha.

I tried to add pictures, but the pop up to add them isn't working.

Room Tip: Ask for Unit 6. It's in the middle, next to the pavilion and best upkept unit. Each room is in...

The thing about King's Bay is that it is different in a way that some will love others won't.
A previous review offered the opinion that a room at a chain motel for $20 more would be preferable. I would respond if that were to be your choice you would miss the following:
Beautiful King's Bay on Crystal River practically at your front door.
A stove, full size refrigerator, in a modest size kitchenette.
A room twice the size of anything less than a two room suite at any chain.
Full cable tv wih two comfortable recliners, dining table/four chairs, full size couch, king or two queen beds.
A large covered veranda on beautifully groomed grounds.
Ground level entry with parking at the door-some rooms with front and back doors.
Free dockage for those with boats. On the water pickup at the dock for guided fishing or excursions.
Sir Lancelot the Canada Goose and duck friends to greet you at any time in exchange for a Cheerio or two.
In addition at least in February you will likely find a number of regulars gathered at the veranda afternoons, very friendly folks. Sir Lancelot generally seems to be in attendance as well. While we were there we counted license plates from nine different states and we didn't see everyone's car.
What's not to like? If you like only a brand new room that smells like it has been recently declared "no smoking", with windows that don't open, and view of a paved parking lot, you won't like King's Bay.
We stayed in room 17 and would again.

Our family of four stayed here one night, based on the Moon Handbook recommendation. After five Disney days, a touch of "old Florida" sounded like a nice change. Location and proximity to manatee viewing was great. I just wished the lodge had been updated and maintained a little better. There is a point where "rustic" crosses over to "run-down" and this place has just about reached that point. With a little more investment by the owners, this would be a great place to stay. Interesting to find out most of the other folks staying there were long-term tenants--mostly retirees from further north. We felt a little like we were invading their retirement community.
