“Great location, good resort, poor service”

This was our second stay at the OceanWalk. There were enough annoying details on our first visit that I probably wouldn't have returned, but we had the opportunity to stay with family (who are owners) and I don't like to look a gift horse in the mouth.

The resort is obviously popular, as booking the resort for our full two week stay was impossible to do in one room. Our party had a somewhat staggered arrival, so we ended up having three rooms - two of which were on the first two days. Day one was a single bedroom. My brother drove through the night with a two year old and arrived at 7:30am, only to be told check-in was at 4pm.

Day 2 I arrived and we all had to move to a two-bedroom unit. We asked if it was possible to do early check-in or late checkout, so they wouldn't have to completely pack up and wait several hours. "No," they said. You already have late checkout as WorldMark (owns 2 floors) has a 12pm checkout while standard Wyndham checkout is 10am.

...so apparently my "late" checkout IS standard, then...as the whole floor is WorldMark.

That wouldn't have been so bad if it was a firm rule, but they left it open by saying "we may be able to get you in early." They checked back at about 2pm, and were told "oh, the previous occupants of your unit checked out later than we expected," so they puttered around Daytona until they could get in.

The following day, more people arrived and we moved to a three bedroom unit. I asked them specifically (again) if late checkout/early check-in was an option and got the same spiel.

"No, you already have late checkout. But we should be able to get you in early - they clean the 3-bedrooms first. I know that for a fact."

In the morning, we packed up and left to waste some time. Came back at 2pm and were told "your room isn't ready yet - the people in your previous unit just checked out [late]."

So....we apparently can't check out late, but everyone else can. Nice.

The situation got a little better once we were in our 3-bedroom, as we didn't have to move anymore. However, two of the pools were closed for the first few days, and the amenities in the room are a decade old.

This wasn't a deal-breaker, but we had called ahead to see what sort of TVs they had - to see if the guys could hook up the Playstation during downtime. "Flat-screen TVs," they said. Out of our three units, the 2 bedroom was the only one that had one. In the long-running room (3bdrm), we had 3 tube TVs with generic remotes. One of them was a VHS combo. There was also a small stereo with a tape deck in it, and a freestanding dvd player that connected to the living room TV.

Our card keys quit working twice. All of them - which means they were set to expire. One of those times, we were dragging kids back from Disney at 1:30am and found out they didn't work.

The one person at the desk was helping some other weary travelers check-in at the time, and we had to wait 30 minutes to get our keys reset. It would have been longer had one of the guys waiting to check in not offered to let us go in front of him once he heard our plight. (Thanks again, random stranger).

If you are looking for a place to crash while you do activities in the Daytona or Orlando area, and you can get a continuous stay, this place will work. If you want a full resort experience, look elsewhere.

If you're a WorldMark owner and you are looking for a place to go - I strongly recommend you go somewhere else.

Stayed 11/5 - 11/12/11. For first time, we did not have an ocean view room and thought we would be disappointed. Not so! Room had view of city and Halifax River. Because the buildings are so tall, they shade the pool deck by about noon (if you get a good chair). If sun is what you want, the room balcony will allow afternoon sun. Of course you can always lay on the beach. Lazy River was very cold, but hot tub nice at night and outdoor pool was heated (even took an evening swim). Used fitness room. Room was FABULOUS. Nice size equipped kitchen (which we rarely used). Nice dining room table (for 6). Sleeper sofa (cushions were somwhat annoying) and 2 chairs. Nice large bedroom w/king bed. Nice jacuzzi tub with full vanity area, separated from the actual bathroom with walk-in shower, toilet, and sink. In other words, we each had our own sink/countertop areas. We love this location as we like bouncing between Daytona, New Smyrna, Ormond and Flagler Beaches. We have our favorite restaurants (Aunt Catfish is informal - foot of causeway at Dunlawton), Lulu's and Betty's A1A Cafe in Ormond Beach, The Garlic in New Smyrna. There are also great shops/galleries at each of those locations. Love Stacy Lipton Interiors. About an hour drive to St. Augustine, we took the trolley tour there on an overcast Sunday and really enjoyed it. Ate lunch at Old City House Restaurant. Great food and don't have to pay to park (rare in this city). Don't usually eat at chain restaurants when traveling, but happened to visit concierge on 4th floor and picked up a card for a free "Bang Bang Shrimp" appetizer at Bonefish Grill w/2 entree's . By default, we went there one night because the local spot we were going to was closed. Never had the Bang Bang Shrimp until that night - WOW! So glad we went there. Already looking forward to next year. Thinking 2 weeks instead of just one!

“great vacation in spite of the complaints”
Reviewed 3 October 2011 for a stay in September 2011

Had a wonderful time This is a great location. The one pool & jacuzzi were closed for resurfacing, so that was dissappointing because there were not enough lounge chairs unless you got down to the pool very early. The inside bar was never opened & had no hours posted. The outside bar was only opened till 3 just when alot of people are coming up from the beach. Even with these complaints we still had a good time. The rooms need to be updated & new window treatments in the bedroom or at least ones that work. Wi Fi should be included like at other vacation rentals.

“Delightful Daytona Hotel”
Reviewed 24 July 2011 for a stay in May 2011

My sister and I stayed at this hotel when we attended the Emery Riddle graduation in May 2011. We had a delightful stay. The front desk staff was awesome. Our hostess was from Jamaica and she was so sweet to give us all the hotel details upon checkin. We had an ocean view room that had a spectacular view of Daytona Beach. The hotel was so convenient. We walked to the shopping area, had dinner and went shopping. We will definatley staff here again!

“Holiday in style! Great venue, nice people and views to die for!”
Reviewed 20 May 2011 for a stay in October 2010

If you are looking for a smart, clean hotel that's well run - then this is a top choice. We flew from the UK and wanted to relax in comfort. We walked onto the poolside and met a really friendly guy - who was the head of security. This hotel's security team keep a high-profile there. They are attentive and vigilant - and remind you to make sure that your room's door is pulled shut behind you when you leave. You do this at home - so why not when on holiday? We visited Daytona for Oktoberfest - and the hotel was a great host for the many bikers there. The security staff helped us all to have a really good time. Enjoy your stay here, the facilities are great, the staff work hard to help you - and we'll be back for more!
