“No AC in Lobby is torture”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 June 2011

Honestly, this is a beautiful hotel. The Lobby is amazing, with chairs and comfy areas throughout a huge lobby, a breakfast area with a great free continental breakfast/ and a bar with an outdoor patio to hang out during the day and at night. the rooms are quaint and clean and comfortable.
BUT, having no AC in that huge lobby (where you ate breakfast and tried to hang out in to meet friends, have a drink etc.) was horrible. The humidity as soon as you got off the elevator hits you like a wall, your hair frizzes and sweat explodes throughout your body. After the first morning, having breakfast in the dining area, i spent the next few mornings, bringing my breakfast back to my room. We were a large group and all shocked at having no AC...who goes anywhere in the spring summer or fall in florida without AC??
could not go back. wish they would add AC, cause i loved the place and location is awesome.

We found this little gem on Trip Advisor and were quite pleased. We stayed off season, so the rates were low, and the beach club was almost empty. The hotel was clean, comfortable and charming. We stayed in a large king size room. The beach club was just lovely- private and well maintained. We would definitely stay here again!

Stayed May 9th so the price had come down. We really enjoyed the breakfast on the front porch every morning. The bed was very comfortable even had regular size pillows where other Florida hotels we stayed at had mini pillows. Overall the room was nice. The Cabana Club was great, hardly anyone there, had the pool to ourselves most of the time, enjoyed the beach cabana's when we had enough sun. Higly reccomend. Rochester, NY.

this hotel is great inbetween of hotel and bed and breakfast. The charm of the historic hotel and furnishings make it feel intimate but you don't feel like you are staying in someones house. Being right on Atlantic Ave there is a ton of great restaurants, bars, and shopping right outside the door. The beach is a nice walk away. The breakfast is average, except for the fresh squeezed juices, those are great! But sitting on the front porch, people watching, eating breakfast was great.

We just returned from a 3 day stay at the Colony. We could not have been more pleased! Any and all of the staff we encountered were courteous, professional and accommodating. We arrived early on a Friday. We were told we could check in from noon on. They offered to hold onto our luggage while we went to lunch. When we returned we allowed to check in and we received a complementary room upgrade with no prompting from us.

Our room was big enough for the two of us. The bathroom was huge. There was plenty of lighting and a nice ambiance. The shower has a shower gel and shampoo dispenser. Which was a nice convenience.

The free daily breakfast buffet was quite good. There was fresh fruit, good quality coffee, eggs, various meat choices as well as a nice assortment of breads and muffins, cereals and fresh squeezed juice. This breakfast would easily cost $20-30 for two people if you had to pay.

The Beach and Cabana club was quite nice. It is a a fairly long walk. Take the hotel shuttle or your car. There is plenty of secure parking.

All in all I have to say that the majority of what you'll read in previous reviews is accurate. Yes, the hotel is old. They do an excellent job maintaining it. There was plenty of air conditioning for our needs. The beds were comfortable and we slept well. If you are light sleeper ask for a room away from the traffic.

This hotel is an excellent value. It refreshing not to stay in a chain hotel. As mentioned, the staff was excellent and we felt that they were genuinely interested in making our stay as pleasant as possible. I have no hesitation in recommending the Colony to anyone.

Room Tip: Ask nicely without demands or expectations.

The Colony is quaint and charming and a fun place to hang out with friends. But it was built in 1928, and this is readily apparent. Some things about the hotel's age add charm (the manually-operated elevator) and some detract from comfort (no central air conditioning). It seems the hotel could introduce some updates without detracting from its historic status: WiFi would be an easy upgrade, for instance. The bathroom could use some vanity space other than a four-inch ledge above the sink. And the flat-screen TV, while a nice touch, wouldn't display half its channels (digital channels were all locked up, while analog channels were visible).

But you don't go to the beach to watch TV. If you go to the beach to spend time on the beach, note that The Colony is a 10-15 minute (1/2 mile) walk from the public beach access at the end of Atlantic Avenue. Many guests might choose to take the hotel shuttle to The Colony Cabana Club. Access is included. It's 2 miles from the hotel. The shuttle was running about five times a day during our visit. The cabana club is nice, and provides towels, ice, water, beach chairs, and umbrellas to hotel guests. Lunch is available but expensive.

The large lobby becomes a great open-air bar at night, with (at least during our visit) easy listening live music. It's a great spot to people-watch those strolling Atlantic Avenue, and is subdued enough to be able to have real conversation with friends.

Although it's not a beachfront hotel, The Colony splits the difference between an in-town
hotspot (it's in the midst of many restaurants and interesting shops) and a beach bum's paradise (with the cabana club and shuttle). If I were returning to Delray Beach, though, I would check into staying at the Delray Beach Marriott, which truly is across the street from the beach.

Traveled with wife, 18 yr old daughter and 3 chihuahuas. The hotel was extremely accomodating. Having the beach area where the pets were allowed to be on was fantastic..
Tthe location of the hotel itself is excellent. All the shops and restaurants right there. within 2 blocks in any direction. Staff was friendly and very courteous. We all, including the dogs, had a marvelous time.
