“Unexpected pleasure in Delray beach”
Reviewed 1 February 2013

My husband and I spent an enjoyable five days at The Colony Hotel And Cabana Club in Delray Beach. We knew that it was an older hotel, so the small size of our room was no surprise. Both the room and (very large) bathroom were immaculate. The entire hotel and cabana areas were exceptionally clean and well maintained. The pool could use a little cement around the edges though.
The breakfast buffet featured real food (no smelly waffle machine) simple and varied.
We were most impressed by the cabana/beach area. What a treat to sit under an umbrella in the sand or go for a swim in the salt water pool. There is also nice cafe area for lunch. We loved the whole relaxed atmosphere.
For location, price, and service our experience here was perfect.

We loved our stay at The Colony Hotel. We especially loved the foyer with the vibrant colours, ceiling fans and jazz music. I felt like I was in a Bogart movie. They have photos on the walls of days gone by. Yes, it's an older hotel and many guests are older too. But I happen to love the ambiance. It's a beautiful building, well maintained, great little breakfast with plentiful seating to people watch. Their beach club is beautiful. It should have more shuttles to the beach though.

This is an historic hotel well situated right in the middle of the majority of shops, bars and restaurants on Delray's Atlantic Avenue. The beach and other places are just a short walk East.

It is an old property, obviously, that the staff and ownership has done a great job keeping clean, open and inviting. With old properties come the obvious issues as to room size, somewhat lack of modern amenities such as old a/c units and overall value. Old style room key (actual key and plastic chain holder) and a manned elevator. If you have an open attitude and don't demand too much from a property when you are on a beach vacation, then its a very good choice.

Every staff member I encountered was exeedingly friendly and access to the Beach Club was great. I had a car so I drove the 1-2 miles to the Ocean and then south a bit. Had lunch there too - highly recommend. Very dog friendly hotel, but not noisy at least the nights I stayed. The porch was a good place to have breakfast (self serve eggs, breakfast meats, fruit, breads, coffee, etc. offered in back of lobby each morning) or evening drinks.

I'm glad I stayed there for the experience and would return. I would probably opt for larger room offerings though if the cost made sense given other options in the area.

Room Tip: Probably worth paying extra for larger room especially if 2 people

Recently stayed at the Colony, while visiting my parents in Delray. The pros.Great location, right in the middle of Atlantic ave.Walkable to all the restaurants and shops. Great porch for people watching. Nice beach club! very good lunch and byo,Free parking. Now the cons. Very old hotel, found the lobby to be very dark. while our room was large and clean, thought it was dark for Florida. All the floors are hard wood so we did hear the neighbors in the hallway. All in all ,found it a great value for the money. Will likely return!

Room Tip: Much quieter in the back of hotel

the hotel management would enforce some policies to rein in oblivious and inconsiderate guests.

We stayed at this hotel again over Christmas and New Year's. Everything I wrote in 2011 still holds true. We got the same room on the second floor in the back of the hotel. We occasionally heard people in the hallway and we could here the train, but as we had stayed here before, I had my earplugs and wasn't particularly disturbed by these things. Delray has become an ever more popular destination and this hotel is ideally located. A highlight of this visit was the opening of Le Macaron directly across the street. This is a dog friendly hotel and we never were disturbed by dogs or dog noise while in our room.

While we found the hotel staff to be pleasant and helpful, we were disappointed that they didn't address quality of life type issues.

If it weren't for:
the rude woman with a giant poodle splayed on the floor making it difficult to approach registration or the bar (her dog was disabled, but why take it to the bar?),
the woman who thought it was fine to take her dog to yoga class and have it prance on our mats,
the smokers on the veranda (Note: this is supposed to be a non-smoking hotel),
the children sneezing or coughing on the breakfast buffet,
the guest who dropped a serving spoon on the floor and then returned it to the buffet.
we might stay here again.

Room Tip: Rooms in the back and on the top floor are quieter.

Location: Right in the heart of the upscale, vibrant 'small town' downtown, the hotel's front porch is a great place to people watch while enjoying morning coffee or an after dinner drink. Weekends offer live entertainment in the spacious open lounge/bar that has the original wicker and bright, tropical decor. On this particular weekend, it was cool enough to have a log fire in the large fireplace.

Rooms: Room 211 is on the 3rd floor of the hotel. The king bed has a headboard fashioned from two original twins from the early days of the hotel. The mattress was oversized and firm. The bedding was an organic blend that was soft but not slippery---truly luxurious feeling. A small bedside table and chair along with a larger work desk gave ample space for writing notes, using the iPad (wifi included), and as a makeup station. We had a dresser, night stand, and cabinet. The large walk-in closet was lighted and plenty big for lots of clothes. The bathroom had a long tub/shower combination.

Amenities: Included wifi, large flat screen TV, windows that really open(!), heavy blackout draperies for sleeping in or afternoon naps, breakfast buffet (also included), off street parking behind hotel, and they are pet friendly(!) The clock/radio is actually an iPod docking station, so you can have your own music on hand. A short van ride away is a Beach Club that has been highly touted. Right now it is too cool for swimming so I'm not sure we'll get there.
Breakfast buffet included fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, oatmeal, corned beef hash, toasts and rolls, cold cereals, juices and coffee.

Check-in/front desk/staff: Mr. Creaven was helpful with dinner reservations, lunch and touring suggestions. Stephanie showed us to our room and explained the original-to-the-building operator-run elevator which is truly unique. Most folks under 35 have probably never even seen one of these! She also assisted us with reservations for a 2 hour Intercoastal Waterway Sunday morning Brunch cruise that was just blocks away.

A few little improvements could be made to bring the rating up to 5.

-The reading lights by either side of the bed are designed to have 3-way lights in them, but only one level worked, so the light was just barely adequate for reading in bed.
-The bartender knew little about the area and seemed more interested in watching the History Channel than serving.
-While the staff on duty were helpful when sought out and asked, they seemed preoccupied with other 'more important' things on the computer or elsewhere. They were not focused on their guests, but on business or personal interests.
-Since parking is in the rear of the hotel, bags must be self loaded onto a luggage cart at the back door and hauled through a ballroom, through the lobby and to the elevator where assistance is then given using the elevator. A bellman or helpful staff member would have been nice since we were the only ones checking in at the time.

Room Tip: There are only 3 floors in the hotel. With wood floors in all the hallways and most rooms, an upper...

The Colony hotel in Delray Beach is classic and quirky. To give just a sense of the place: hardwood floors with no rugs, the original elevator with operator (actually one of the front desk staff), super bright florida colors on the walls, old furnishings (some re-purposed, like single headboards doubled up for king beds) and old tile on the bathroom floors. Plus the rooms are not large, and the airconditioners are window units (very modern ones, however). Yet the towels are nicely fluffy and soft, the toiletries good quality, the staff helpful, and the beach club is just wonderful - salt water, heated pool, beach chairs & all the other beach amenities, excellent lunch (eg fresh mahi salad with arugula and pesto). Not to mention a beautifully clean hotel - in every corner.
What makes it all the more amazing - there are no fees for anything: beach club, hot breakfast buffet, shuttle to the beach, all included. For the price, there is nothing to compare in Delray Beach and probably not in all of south Florida.
The one downside: noise! Do not get a room that fronts onto Atlantic Ave if you are staying Friday or Saturday night (and probably Thursday, maybe Wednesday, and not at all if you are noise-sensitive). Our first night (Friday) we knew there would be noise - we were told there was live music on the front porch until midnight. (BTW - music is eclectic and fun, and there is a small bar to provide drinks but no food.) But the motorcycles and loud cars etc. kept going long past midnight - no amount of white noise from the a/c could drown it out. Happily, the hotel manager was kind and we were able to switch our room the next day to one that was back from the street. So you can add a very understanding and helpful staff to the wonderful things at the Colony Hotel! The new room made all the difference, and we would go back there in a flash!

Room Tip: As mentioned above, rooms in the front are VERY noisy, and btw, all "corner queens" are in...
