“Up-to-date Historic Hotel”
Reviewed 27 January 2011

The location can't be beat - right on the main drag (Atlantic Avenue), steps from all the restaurant, bar and shopping action of Delray Beach. It's only a five-minute walk across the Intercoastal bridge to the public beach. But the glory of this hotel is the private ocean-front cabana club, with a restaurant, salt-water pool and beach chairs/towels/umbrellas, free to all hotel guests (until 10 pm!). Those without a car can use the complimentary hotel shuttle (cabana club is about a mile south of Atlantic Ave.).
Back at the hotel, the front veranda bar is a great place for breakfast or an afternoon/evening drink. A member of Historic Hotels of America, the property has many reminders of 1926, the year this yellow stucco landmark was built. The original elevator is staffed with an attendant, the original hotel switchboard is on display, and an antique telephone hangs in a private booth. An original quad writing station is a throwback to the days when travelers wrote postcards and letters. The wicker furnished indoor/outdoor lobby is not for the color shy. The eye-popping color scheme extends to the corridors leading to the rooms, which boast polished wood floors and are furnished with original Lincoln Furn. Co. beds, dressers and desks. The room decor is appropriately dated without being the least bit uncomfortable. 21st-century touches include flat screen TVs, iPod docking stations and free wireless Internet. The complimentary breakfast buffet is lavish and varied (each morning there was a different breakfast meat: bacon one day, corned beef hash another, sausage a third day). Restaurant does not serve dinner. Plenty of free parking for hotel guests. There was a classical chamber music concert the Sunday afternoon of my stay.
An unexpected plus was an on-site laundry for use of hotel guests. For adult friends or family members traveling together, the hotel offers accommodations of two bedrooms connected by one bathroom (both bedrooms have separate doors to the hallways) at a considerable savings over booking two rooms. Pet friendly. What's not to like?

A step into Old Florida's past. We spotted the Colony Hotel by the amazing color of it's tower against the sky on a quick drive by. We pulled the car over immediately and entered the most charming open air lobby with ferns, fireplace, antique wicker, and splendid happy colors on every wall. The staff was more then helpful. We booked a gracious sized room that had a super comfortable king sized bed. The location of the hotel is right near the heart of town and all is walk able and fun to stroll. Restaurants choices are everywhere.
The Beach is a short walk away. Breakfast was included and we ate open air on the pleasent front veranda. What a great location to experience Delray Beach.

We had another wonderful stay at The Colony Hotel. The room was so clean, the breakfast was delicious and the staff so friendly. We were able to spend some time at the Cabana Club, where we had lunch. Again, the staff could not be any more welcoming. The lunch was absolutely fantastic as was the service. I highly recommend this hotel for so many reasons. The location is superb. You can walk to many restaurants and stores. You can take the shuttle to the Cabana Club or drive. It is a historic hotel yet makes every effort to being green and eco friendly. Our family loves this hotel !This is just the greatest spot. Very reasonably priced too.

Pros: This charming hotel is close to everything in downtown Delray. Great restaurants and shops are right outside your door. They have a shuttle to their private beach club at Linton Blvd. (We drove, so I can't attest to how reliable it is.) The staff is friendly and informative. Breakfast includes everything you need - scrambled eggs, hot/cold cereal, breads, fruit, juice, coffee/tea, and either bacon, sausage or hash. Lunch is available at the beach club. (I really liked the fish tacos.) Our room was large, comfortable, and very clean. There are no carpets, just highly polished wooden floors. I saw the staff mopping the hallways daily. In room amenities included soap, moisturizer, mouthwash, and wi-fi. Note: The shampoo and soap in the shower are dispensed from a wall mounted fixture - similar to ones you might find in a gym. During cold nights there was a fire going in the big fireplace in the lobby. The bar is very reasonable and the bartenders make good classic drinks. The musician playing on Saturdays during our stay was terrific. While at the bar, I met locals and other guests. Parking is free for guests. Our room had a through the window a/c and electric heaters in the wall. The hotel also supplied a space heater. If you like yoga, this is the hotel for you. For a small fee, there's a yoga class or two everyday. On Sunday mornings they have live yoga music. We were told that up to a 150 people regularly attend this yoga class. On the two Sundays we were there, there were over 100 people in attendance. This particular class was a lot of fun and seemed appropriate for all levels.
Cons: We requested a 2nd floor room facing the parking lot, so the noise from the hallway was the biggest problem. Anytime people walking by were talking you could hear them clearly in the room. I was surprised that it was often the cleaning staff that we heard in the morning, but some of the guests were equally inconsiderate. I never heard noise from the rooms on either side of us, just the hallway. Other than at breakfast, there is no food nor are hot beverages available. The hotel will provide an in room refrigerator if requested at a hefty charge. Once it was warm enough to use the air conditioner, you could hear the hum of other air conditioners in use. The hotel gym is really tiny, but the hotel has a deal with a local gym a few blocks away- United State of Fitness. We never had any trouble getting on the equipment here and the classes were great.

We visited over Christmas weekend and it was very festive. The hotel and cleaning staff were great: friendly, conscientious and helpful. Our room was a good size and had a comfortable bed and furniture. The reading lights next to the bed were excellent! This may not be important to some, but reading is part of every vacation for us and it is rare to find a hotel with bulbs over 60 watts. The colors in the hotel are bright and wonderful as are the paintings and prints on the corridor walls. But the lobby is the real beauty of the place. Many sitting areas, skylights, a green marble fireplace that had a roaring fire one chilly morning, decorated in cheery colors and after 5:00 pm, offers a great bartender. Full self serve breakfast was excellent. I'd love to live in this place!

There are good restaurants and a great ice cream parlor within walking distance.

We spent a wonderful day at the Cabana Club (no extra charge). Do not miss this hotel.

If the ice machine on the second floor had been working and the ceiling fan wasn't so loud, it would have been perfect. I'm sure they would have moved us, but we didn't ask for it.

If they simply carpeted the halls and the rooms, this place would be great.

They must love showing off the 1930s hard wood floors because there are no carpets or rugs anywhere. It makes this hotel too loud especially if you are looking for a good nights' sleep! In your room, you can hear every step down the hall and every step in the room above you.

Great free breakfast each morning though!

We just got married and had all of our friends and family at the Colony. It's the MOST charming hotel in Delray, not modern which is such a refreshing change. The beach club is a piece of PARADISE. Having the breakfast included makes it so easy for the family to be together, and the price is HALF of what all the near by hotels are charging. It is a historic building so expect a little creakyness all part of the charm. It's SUPER clean and dog friendly! Just completely allows for the vacation experience, everything is in walking distance and my friends and family were all thrilled. Live music Fri and Sat night on the porch....tooooooo cute~~~ THANK YOU JOHN and STAFF for a MAGICAL weekend!
