“Things I'd wish I'd known”

Ok, so we have been to this Hilton maybe a dozen times in 15 years, at one time it was a relaxing place to stay with a beautiful beach, things have changed. If loud groups of kids and teenagers, frazzled parents, slow elevators, umbrellas four deep on the beach, pedestrian room service, are deal breakers, go elsewhere. If you do go and have quiet kids, or are a couple, do yourself a favor and get a room in the spa building, much quieter, although no bunk beds if you have multiple kids. Also, the original building at times has an odor, don't know if this from the flooding that occurred last year, but friends on a different floor and our room had unpleasant, unclean odor at times. We asked to moved and by the hardest were on the last day. Spa is just ok, nothing special, my masseur had a rough touch and talked the whole time--not what I was looking for. Not at all sure I'll ever go back. One bright spot was Seagars restaurant, expensive, but worth it to get away from the crowd.

HiltonSandestinBeach, Manager at Hilton Sandestin Beach, Golf Resort & Spa, responded to this review, 15 June 2011
Thank you for your feedback. We’re thankful and honored that you have chosen the Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort & Spa as your preferred vacation destination over the past 15 years.

Over the years, the Sandestin area has grown in popularity and been recognized nationwide for its sugar-white sand, emerald-green water and Southern hospitality. For 27 years, the Hilton Sandestin Beach has distinguished itself as the area’s premier full-service beachfront resort hotel, and we’re proud to be a family-friendly destination that provides something for every traveler. We are an especially popular summer vacation destination for families during spring break and during the summer months. Please be advised that our minimum check-in age, however, is 25.

Per the concerns and preferences you express in your review, I’d encourage you to consider visiting us during the less busy times of the year. The fall, for example, is a gorgeous time to visit Northwest Florida, as our weather remains pleasantly warm and our Gulf sunsets are spectacular.

Thank you again for your feedback and continued loyalty. We hope to see you again soon. Please feel free to contact us at 850-267-9500 for any other concerns. Thank you for choosing the Hilton Sandestin Beach.

Sincerely,

Management

Although the view was good and the beach was great, the hotel was definitely not! Not even up to average standards, although it was billed (and cost) much more.

No service, no towels, no toilet paper, had to call managers daily. Definitely do not order room service, as it can take up to 2 hours and is terrible, not worth the wait!

When you call for help, the front desk will not answer, even though when you go down there they are not busy. Go to Destin, but stay somewhere else!

Room Tip: Call for beachFRONT. Will not honor floor request

I am a Hilton VIP Diamond Member of Hilton Honors and came to Destin on vacation with my family. This Hilton is one of the worst Hilton properties I have ever stayed at (and I stay 3-4 nights a week at Hilton).

Both of our TV's had cable problems from day 1 of our arrival. We had engineering visit our room on 3 separate occasions only to be told, "we can not fix the problem and we contacted our cable provider 6 days ago because we do not have the tools to fix it." Don't get me wrong, Steve, Andy, and Allen (the engineers here) were awesome and very kind, but I DO NOT understand how Hilton can in good conscience put a Diamond member in a room KNOWING FULL WELL the cable is bad. We could not order movies, and the picture was snowy for the ENTIRE 7 day stay. This cable problem affected the rooms below us and next to us too.

The front desk ladies were rude, and the night manager, Mike, was of no help.

Do not bother paying the $46 for beach chairs. Simply bring your own and plop yourself in front of the Hilton guests. They don't care. Also, the smoking on the beach and on balconies of adjoining rooms make being outside disgusting.

While we were there, a wedding party was disgustingly drunk below our rooms on the pool deck. The people were loud and obnosious. The food is over priced and slow with service. It took us over an hour to get our dinner from Barefoots. We had a tradition of ordering room service on our last night on vacation, but did not due to the poor service throughout this hotel.

The elevators are slow and outdated. We waitied upwards of 10 minutes for an elevator. The staff is so inconsistent in their service. We had breakfast coupons and did not pay for my 11 year old daughter to eat hot breakfast, then on the 4th day the waitress demands payment. I am not trying to get things for free, but some consistency would be appreciated. The waitress was rude, but I still gave her gratuity.

When we checked in, we had preordered charging cards for our daughters, only to have the Honors check in lady tell us she had no idea what we were talking about. After asking around, she said the machine to make them was being repaired and they would bring them up to our room. After a full day, my wife called down to the front desk, only to be told that the manager that makes them was out ot lunch and would make them when he returned. After ANOTHER full day, they called and said, 'Sorry, we can't make them." THIS IS POOR SERVICE!!!!

If this is how they treat their VIP Diamond customers, I would absolutely HATE to be an everyday family just trying to have a nice vacation.

MY ADVICE: GO SOMEWHERE ELSE to enjoy Destin.

This was a very solid Beachfront Hilton, located on one of the best beaches in the world. We stayed one night over memorial day weekend and the place was packed with families and children. Our room was a "standard" room, but large in comparison to most hotel rooms. Breakfast was up to Hilton standard and not overly pricey.

I wouldn't recommend coming here if you're looking for an "exclusive" Hilton beach experience, but its a really solid property for a relaxing beach weekend.

Given the high price and reviews we thought this was going to be a very exclusive resort. It is not. It is a nice place for families to have fun with children. It has a nice beach. However, the hotel is overwhelmed with more guests that they can handle and the service we experience was very poor. While it is not their fault that my expectations were higher regarding the experience of the place itself, the lack of service was definitely a problem of lack of management. We sat at the Sushi restaurant and ordered some wine and some food and after about an hour of not getting what we requested we simply left and nobody noticed. Then the maid left a note in the room saying she would be back with hand-towels but she never did. I think they were just totally overwhelmed. I would not go back, but again, it may be fine for families with lots of kids who don't mind feeding the kids in the room, and enjoy a nice and super-crowded pool and a very nice beach.

The hotel was nice, the view spectacular but when we arrived we had one bath towel in our room, didn't realize it until we came in from the beach to shower. Called from desk, waited 2 hours and no towels! went to front desk and they gave me two beach towels. The service wasn't good at all, we went to lounge for late dinner (because we were waiting for towels) waited for a long time no one even greeted us so we ended up taking a taxi to Bayside.

The sand was wonderful, rooms large and cozy. Little fridge and micro area perfect for extended stay. Bar service was awful near mail lobby -beach bars much better to visit. Prices for food a little high, but I didnt want to leave, perfect beach! No shushi before 4. Fireworks on occasion were spectacular. Just loved it!

Room Tip: ask for family side, pool view
