Resorts of Pelican Beach
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 29 March 2014

We stayed here over spring break with 3 young kids, in a 2 BR, 2 BA condo, and the accommodation was excellent. The unit itself was well appointed and had everything we needed, including washer and dryer. It was NOT dirty, under-equipped, nor "dated" in decor (not that we really care too much about the latter if room is big enough!). Price was reasonable for what we got and the views from the front and side balconies were fantastic. The resort itself has 2 nice heated pools, a hot tub, and is right on the beach (no walk, no shuttle as some other places in the area apparently have). One negative is the fitness center is pretty lame, and too small, so if you are hoping to squeeze in a decent workout aside from running on the beach, you might be out of luck. The staff at the resort were above average in terms of courteousness/helpfulness--not outstanding enough to rate the "excellent" level, but clearly demonstrating professionalism, and sincerely caring about customer service. We would definitely return to this resort specifically and to Destin in general (hopefully when it is a bit warmer).

Room Tip: our view was beautiful but we did get noise from the pool, which is open until 10 pm. We were on 4t...

We stayed three nights in a 1 BR, two bath condo in the Pelican building. Unbeatable view of the Gulf from our 18th floor unit, through a spotless glass door onto the balcony. One King bed, two bunks and a pull-out sofa mean that several could sleep here, although it might feel cramped (bunks are in the entry hall). Bunks were not comfortable, but the K bed and sofa-bed were fine.
There's no maid service, but we were given abundant towels for a 3-night stay. Bring beach towels, though--beach chairs are set out daily, but limited in number.
All rooms were clean, and the kitchen was well-equipped with basic appliances, dish towels, and utensils.
Staff were pleasant and helpful at the front desk and on the beach, where they keep two kayaks for rental by the hour.
The one problem we had during our stay was nighttime noise from the unit above ours; someone seemed to be moving furniture between 11:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. Not sure what that was about, but it was noticeable. Aside from this issue, the building was quiet--no sign of Spring Break partying, no rowdy behavior. We were there during the first week of Spring Break, but many of the people we met were snow-birds getting ready to head back north. All things considered, including the furniture-mover, we'd definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: All 1 BR units in the Pelican building seem to have that great Gulf view, but we loved being high up...

The pelican is a beautiful resort next to the beach. I got up early to see the sunrise every morning. The staff was really kind but bizzy. One young lady in particular, Mohini was running around but still provided great service.

We stayed in a 1 bedroom w/ 4 adults. It was quite crowded. Sitting area was small. There was 1 bedroom & then bunk beds in the hallway & a pull out sofa. It did have 2 full baths. Sofa bed was uncomfortable. Lots of rules for the beach. Can't take your own umbrella, can't take large coolers, for the size of the place, very small beach area. It's roped off so if you try to branch out you will be asked to move back to your area. No privacy. They also have a parking deck you have to park in. Could be considered nice but no cover walking from there to entrance so if it's raining you get wet. You can unload at the entrance & then park so make sure you have unloaded everything because it's not a short walk. Will probably not stay here again.

We appreciate receiving your comments and suggestions. Our one-bedroom condominiums are particularly well suited for families with children - particularly making use of the built-in bunk beds in the hallway and two full baths. We hope you might re-consider you thoughts about visiting again. We have a large selection of two-bedroom condominiums which you may find a fit more comfortable with a party including four adults. We would enjoy the opportunity to host you, again!

We've been coming to Resorts of Pelican Beach since it opened around 1997. We were owners of a 2 bedroom 2 bath in the Pelican building on the second floor for several years and then purchased a 3B3B in the Terrace building once it opened. The Terrace building sits back a little from the Pelican building having it's own parking, pool, fitness room, community rooms and lobby but you are allowed to use all the amenities of both buildings. It has many less condos, only 90 which makes it less busy and much more quiet. There are no 3 bedrooms in the Pelican building so you also have more space. Pelican is 1 and 2 bedrooms, Terrace is 2 and 3 bedrooms with 3 penthouses. The views are spectacular from the Terrace from the higher floors. Yes, you do have a better day view of the beach from the Pelican building but from the Terrace building you have views of the ocean, lake, harbor, bay and amazing nighttime views. During special holidays, you can see fireworks from Destin harbor, Ft. Walton and from Niceville across the bay. Both buildings are well kept and many condos have been recently remodeled. Ask for a remodeled higher floor Terrace condo end unit (they have wrap around balconies for beautiful views). Both buildings are extremely busy during the summer months with lots of activities. But, the fall is amazing; warm weather, no crowds, better rates and less waiting at the local restaurants. The only thing that bothers me is the very busy beach during the summers. The beach is actually too small to hold all guests when resort is full and there are very angry neighbors that do not allow you on "their" private beach....I don't understand how a beach can be considered private but they are adamant about it! It's a shame Destin does not widen their beach as Walton County has done. Anyway during the off season, there are no worries as sometimes you have the beach to yourself. No wonder snowbirds love this place!

Room Tip: Terrace building, higher floor, end unit. Ask for a recently remodeled unit.

We have been staying here for years and I've never rated this place. It's a really good to upper mid level place, depending on you're room. We've stayed on all the corners and the middle of the back, always on the 19th and 20th floors. I'm not telling you all I know, but the corners are good. 01=sunrise 11=sunset. The beach is good, it's perfect, but you know they put their umbrellas and chairs everywhere so you have to get out there early or pay to use theirs. I didn't get any so I'm not sure how much they were. The sun deck is a great place to get some sun in October anyway. Around sunrise you may see dolphins and stingrays swimming just off shore. This was the first time I had seen them before. The staff are nice when you check in. We don't really need much anymore but you know bring what you'd need as if you were renting a house. There is no maid service at a house. They have towels and all the kitchen necessities and the a/c always works well. Stay once and sign up for their specials. We get 20% off for being a past guest and use one every time now. The store should be much better. The breakfast was good. We ate there nearly every day.

It depends on what's important.

I felt the room and view (16th fl), were excellent. (The evening of the 24th we witnessed a wonderful thunderstorm that was mesmerizing).

The only thing I thought was a little stupid was that there were no coffee filters. The fact that for $3.00 you get a hundred of them AND a weekend in Las Vegas made us bringing them of little thought.

I had perfect bacon and eggs at the little cafe and found it quaint with a welcoming hostess. Limited selection, but all we needed. (Don't think large hotel restaurant. Think more like a gift shop with a small kitchen).

The staff are friendly and accommodating. We were thinking of "Joe's Crab Shack" but Jennifer, at the front desk suggested we might try the "Back Porch". We did and it was terrific, especially thanks to Jonathan, our waiter.

All in all, it's really a personal choice of what's important. I agree with the observations of most of the 4/5 star critiques. For us, this place was a great value for the dollar and although I believe the exceptions stated on this forum are accurate, they were not important to us.

Hope this helps. Going to Ruth Chris tonight but they're always good.

Room Tip: Ocean front. Like everywhere, higher is a little better for view and noise
