So many times in towns across the country, an ice cream (or gelato, custard, etc.) shop is the number one rated or at least in the top three Trip advisor restaurants. I've wondered how the other restaurants, with their well-trained waitstaff, fine chefs, and creative menus feel about being bested by a shop that basically scoops their product out of a container and plops it into a cup or cone and hands it to their customers. But people love ice cream, especially when it's homemade and comes in a wide variety of interesting flavors. Such is the case with Strachan's, a nice little shop with a good downtown location. My wife and I both got the smallest (kiddie) sized servings of coconut and chocolate mint. Both tasted fine but they don't come cheap; the small scoops ran us almost 8 dollars. But this isn't about getting a bargain; it's about relaxing in one of the outside tables or benches with your frozen treat while taking in the sights and sounds and people of Dunedin. That's worth a few extra bucks.
