“incredibly beautiful, highlight of our trip! we will come back!”
Reviewed 15 March 2012

We stayed at Crystal River and did the manatee tour on the bay, and wanted to kayak the next day, but the dive shop was short on kayaks. We talked to Dallas at The Dive Shop at Plantation Inn (also great!) in Crystal River, and asked him about other options. He recommended Rainbow River Canoe and Kayak. A short drive later, we were there. The owner was friendly and very informative and went over with us exactly what to expect on the trip. We opted for sit-on kayaks (you can choose sit-ins or canoes). He loaded us up on the shuttle with the kayaks and dropped us off less than 10 minutes away at "K.P. Hole," which is the short (3-4 hour) trip. Basically, you get in and start drifting downriver. You have the option to go upriver about 15 minutes to see the headwaters, which the owner explained is where the divers go, and then drift down. You're not on a schedule, you just take your time, drift down, stop when you want to, and eventually end up where you're parked, so you can just drop your boat off and go.
We were on the water for about 4 hours, and the time flew by. We ran to the local WalMart and grabbed masks to take, but ended up not using them much. The shop didn't have snorkel gear available, but did have sunscreen (a must) and dry bags (also a must). You can't take anything disposable with you, so you need styrene or other water bottles that you can fill and take. Having a big net bag to carry sunscreen, masks, and water was pretty handy.
At times, you'll see small groups of canoes and kayaks go by, both up and down river. There are homes on either side of the river at some parts, and at other parts, it's just woods or big cypress stands and beautiful live oaks draped with Spanish moss. We saw countless fish, cormorants (you can see them diving underwater--one swam right next to our boat, and we could see it fishing in the grass), lots of water birds, turtles, and even otters.
After this, we're hoping to go back in the fall and do the 9 hour trip down the Withlacoochee River, and would do the Rainbow River trip again in a heartbeat.
