After going down in that area for 30 plus years we finally tried the Sportsman's Lodge.
The rooms were clean The beds were nice, and the view of the bay was outstanding.
They really made our stay relaxing. We will definitley be back.
Thanks Edda!!

My Husband and I lucked up on the Sportsman's Lodge about ten years ago and we go back about two to three times a year. If You are looking for Condo's or room service, go on over the bridge to apachacicola to the INN, But this place is so private, clean and cool, The sunsets and sunrises are in many of my pictures, The ladies that own it are so sweet and yet Professional and they do not charge a high price for the rooms and what they do charge is worth ever penny. There is also a huge seafood/Steak Resturant on the water, in the Bay in front of the Lodge that is so delisious and you keep wanting to eat there the entire ime you are there. I Only have good things to say about the Lodge and we will continue to go there at least three times a year or more. Once you go there, You are hooked and yes, We always bring our dog, Streak, He loves it there as well.

My husband & I stayed here for three days the week after Christmas. It was not fancy, but it was clean and reasonable. It is a short 5 minute drive to Apalachicola and about 10 minutes to St. George Island, so the location is good. It is located right on the bay. There are peacocks walking all over the grounds. We stayed in the smaller units with just a mini frig and a microwave, but the larger units face the water and have a full kitchen. They only cost $10 more. We met some people who have been returning year after year for up to 15 years. Some stay a month at a time. The only warning is this time of year there is a hickory tree that is losing its nuts where you park. Some people were getting dents in their cars. We were warned about it as soon as we got there, so we moved our car away from the trees.

i was born and raised in tallahassee, fl until i had to move out of state to earn a living...at anything, 30 yrs. ago. yes, before the current depression, a living has been hard to carve out in my beloved home state. we found this place about 12 years ago. i laugh at tourist reviews equating this area with "the redneck riviera", which only confirms the fact they are indeed from out of state.

sportsman's lodge is a jewel, endangered and truly sainted. it will not last forever. native floridians who can only visit now, book a stay at this 'moment in time'. you will treasure each memory.

the managers/owners are great and also a wonderful and rare find. they are in no way 'eccentric'...they are simply those amongst us rare ones who understand respect for an ecosystem we cannot take for granted or forever!

a lodger for life!

...but what do you expect in the Redneck Riviera? Definitely a strange place, but not bad. Our room was old, with wood panelling and plenty of striped wallpaper, but clean--although smoking was allowed in there, and you could smell it. Our dog was allowed, and the eccentric but nice lady at the desk let us know when we called that he couldn't be left alone; presumably so that they can clean the room without running into a potentially unfriendly animal. But at least they let him in without a problem. The grounds were...unusual, but nice, on the water. The peacocks were, again, unusual, but didn't bother us. They amused the dog. The restaurant on premises was surprisingly good (large portions, $5 pitchers of beer). We were prepared for the worst, but for $52/night, this really wasn't bad. I/my fiance didn't find this place scary or intimidating at all. Oh, there was wireless available--seemed to be only around the office are. It didn't pick up in the room; the restaurant also has a computer available for use.
