“A neat place to visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 July 2014

We were looking for something to do on a cloudy and somewhat rainy day since going to the beach was out. This place was recommended it to us and it was right over the bridge from St. George Island. It was a very neat and informative place and best of all it was FREE! ( They do ask for a donation.)

We took a peaceful walk through native plants to get to the nature center. We started out with a quick movie, in a comfortable air conditioned room, about the Apalachicola bay. It was very interesting and quite a complex ecosystem. Inside the nature center we learned more about the history of the area, especially the oyster business. The oyster have such a unique flavor and we learned it was due to the bay's mix of fresh and salt water. There are also a few tanks that show case local fish, but it's not a huge display.

Before leaving, we took the boardwalk to the bay overlook. The whole place is not very big, but it was a nice way to spend a few hours.

“Great place to learn about local wildlife!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 July 2014

This place has very impressive facilities. They have several open tanks for anyone to view local wildlife. This facility is working hard to monitor the bay, and educate the public about this special area of Florida.

“Maybe OK for little ones but avoid the lecture”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 June 2014

Maybe my expectations were too high but all we learned about were the 100 ways that baby turtles can die on the way to and from the nest. I realize this is important and hope this issue is getting better but it really would have been nice if this could have been balanced with anything else. Made it hard for me to enjoy any other parts of this facility (which is nice). Don't leave lights on at the beach at night!

Your thoughts on the sea turtle lecture were appreciated. I have spoken with the presenter. We offer this free session during the nesting season and yes, it can be received as a fairly heavy experience for some visitors (adults and children). The talk is intended to provide an authentic account of what happens on our local beaches, it is not designed to provide a nature channel lecture on sea turtles. Many of our other exhibits do provide up-close opportunities with real animals as well as access to additional information about their status, for anyone interested in being more informed. I am certainly sorry that the turtle talk made it hard for you to enjoy any other parts of this facility.
