“Not what's advertised”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 December 2012

When we looked at the pictures and reviews we were really excited to be staying here. However, upon arrival we were unable to get into the clubhouse and there was no one about to greet us or ask how to get in. We did eventually get in so it wasn't a huge issue. The pool is said to be heated in the high season...why not in the off season when people likely want to use it most? The wifi is incredibly slow...again not a huge issue because we are not glued to our internet and we did find it elsewhere when we needed it. What was most apparent was the condition of the unit we were staying in. While clean for the most part, many things were not working. The remote for the TV, the fridge had a leak which left puddles of water on the kitchen floor, the unit was advertised as being capable of sleeping 4...2 is a push and the fold out in this unit was so old it was hard to even sit in it let alone1 person sleep in it. There were no extra blankets in the unit so we had to hunt around in the clubhouse for more. They advertise fishing pole rentals and bike rentals but there was no one around to do so. Couldn't figure out how to turn on the dock light, propane tanks on the BBQ's were either leaky or empty, no phones available...just so many little things that we got completely turned off. Don't get me wrong, we appreciate the older, rustic cottages rather than the condos that are mostly found around Florida. However, this particular cottage #1 is in need of some attention and TLC and the grounds are a little dumpy looking. Will not go back and will not recommend it to anyone.

KLELB, Owner at Englewood Lighthouse Resort, responded to this review, 27 January 2013
Being resident owners at the resort for the past ten years, we really like our “dumpy” waterfront acre on Lemon Bay. This guest stayed a full week, was really bothered that we were away and didn’t like telling anyone about her issues. It is always challenging when we need to get away ourselves. Hey, if we don’t see our Mothers for Christmas, we get in trouble! We always have local staff run the resort in our absence.

This particular guest booked the cottage for 11 nights over New Years 2013, a period when we were away. Unfortunately, this dissatisfied guest left out some positives, as usual. On our website, even though it says that high-season rates apply for holidays, we sometimes do not charge them. We try to offer our guests good values. So this guest paid less than $61 per night for a one-bedroom cottage with a full kitchen over New Years. This is hardly worthy of one star for value. Also, when she arrived early, we allowed her an early check-in. When she called us a week later with a barrage of complaints and was combative on the phone (note: after the posted checkout time) we allowed her to pack up and leave and refunded her the remaining four nights. After how she treated Lisa, we really just wanted her off our property.

This guest was given the housekeeper’s personal cell phone number the day she checked in. Some of her complaints could have easily been addressed with a simple phone call, but this guest chose to wait until a week later and unload on Lisa all at once. For example, if we knew the dock light was off, we could have had someone switch it on. This guest claimed that she didn’t want to take up her valuable vacation time to call anyone, but she found enough time to register with TripAdvisor, write her first online review as well as four pages of complaint letters before checking out on January 2. We have her letters available for proof if anyone would like to read them.

POOL: In order to keep our winter Off-Season rates so low, we keep the pool heater off during the colder December and January. Once our Season starts, we run it at 84 degrees. From our website, FAQ page: "The pool is not heated during Off-Season or Lighthouse Special periods."
PHONES: We got rid of the phones in the cottages a few years ago, because almost all of our guests have cell phones. We do not advertise phones in the cottages.
WIFI: We have just upgraded to Verizon FIOS WIFI, which is now much faster! Prior to the upgrade, our DSL WIFI speed was posted on our website (3MB/s).
FRIDGE: There is no water supply to that fridge. Sometimes when it is humid and the freezer is opened/closed a bunch, the defrost cycle outruns the drain pan.
GRILLS: We have 7 grills for guests to use and sometimes a tank runs out, usually at the worst time. Larry spoke to this guest on the phone about where the full tank was located for her party on the West Patio by the Bay. Also, Cottage #1 had a full, working grill 10 feet away from the door.
TV REMOTE: It is a bit finicky, but changes channels fine. (Comcast digital remote)
BED: Cottage #1 has a queen set, pillow-top, that is only one year old. We purchase our beds from Land of Sleep in Venice. This bed frequently holds two people.
SOFA BED: Really just for the occasional extra temporary guest or kids. This guest did not register any additional guests.
FREE STUFF: The free bikes/fishing rods/tennis rackets are just a little perk we like to offer our guests. We tried the old “help yourself plan” before and we lost a few bikes and rods in the process. Also, please note, there is a bike rental store two blocks away (Bikes and Boards). From our website, FAQ page: "So if using the bikes or shuffleboard or clubhouse during your stay is very important to you, please contact us to see if we can accommodate you before you book something and get disappointed."
CLUBHOUSE: We are always uneasy leaving the clubhouse unlocked when we are away because we cannot monitor it. As the guest said, “We did eventually get in” and she rummaged through our supplies for blankets without our permission. Typically, guests call the management or the housekeepers for items they need. After we returned on January 5, we had found the clubhouse furniture to be totally re-arranged, the exercise machine left outside, interior wooden chairs outside, and a clogged sink. So it is pretty obvious why it must be secured in our absence. To remedy this, we have clearly added to the website the dates when the clubhouse is not available.
GUEST CHECKOUT NOTES: This guest had also gone into our supply area and taken four seat cushions back to her cottage for the wooden kitchen and living room chairs, also without our permission. There were four blankets in that cottage at checkout. Although somewhat clean, there was an excessive amount of laundry and blankets for just two people. Also, she secretly stashed another complaint letter into the back of the cottage information binder for future guests to enjoy reading.

This guest will certainly not be back and other local establishments should take note of queenbeetnick from Fernie, British Columbia. It is quite misleading to claim “not what’s advertised” if the information is and has been posted right there on our website. Anyone who runs a business knows that it is very upsetting when someone, who we thought was satisfactorily compensated with a refund (against our policy), goes online and tries to damage our reputation with misleading statements.

We encourage all of our guests to read all of our reviews and understand that we are a small family-run resort that tries to provide very reasonably priced bayfront accommodations. We really do try to make all of our guests feel comfortable and welcome. Just don’t expect us to leave Mom at Christmas to get you a free bike!

This was a very enjoyable, relaxing place to stay. The owners were very friendly and accommodating, making our family feel welcome and comfortable. The cottage was clean and well-equipped. The dock was great for fishing and the pool was nice and clean. Also, the view of the sunset in the evening was outstanding. We would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others!

The cottage was clean and the grounds were very well kept. My husband and I just wanted a get away that close to home and affordable. This was both. It was close to everything we needed. The cottage was well equiped and everything was in good working order. They are one of the only places in the area that would let us book just for the weekend. I will go back.

Our uncle has a house on the beach at Manasota Key and we were down celebrating our grandfather's life who passed away in January so there was no room for us and we had to find somewhere to sleep at night. The Lighthouse Resort was great. The facility is older but immaculate inside. It has everything you need including a kitchen. We stayed in Cottage 4. The owners are extremely nice and the location is central to restaurants. Lemon Bay is a short minute walk away. We were very pleased with our stay.

We love staying at the Englewood Lighthouse Inn. You will too if you want a quiet relaxing cottage with a view of beautiful Lemon Bay. The cottages are clean, cozy, and well-equipped. The sunsets are gorgeous. The location is near three nature trails, a full range of restaurant options, pharmacies and grocery stores. The hosts, Larry and Lisa, live on the grounds and are helpful, efficient, and friendly.

Older cottages but very clean and neat for a low cost. Pet friendly and very quiet. The cottage we stayed in had a full kitchen (Frig, stove, microwave, toaster),Cable TV with two TV's, screened porch, outside gas BBQ with table and chairs. Great view of Lemon bay from the dock and had a very nice pool. Very close to a State park and the beaches. Plenty of Grocery stores and places to eat in the area. Ideal area for a quiet vacation since the community does roll up the side walks in the evening. Will return in the future.

We stayed here the last week of April. Our unit was clean and well furnished. There is a nice pool and we caught a lot of fish off of their dock. We cooked our catch on the gas grill just outside our cabin. I would recommend this resort for someone who just wants to fish and relax. Internet is intermittent.
