“Worst Welcome Ever!”
Reviewed 30 November 2013

Our stay at the Everglades City Motel was marred by the worst welcome I have ever received. We were checked in without a single smile, please, thank you or ‘enjoy your stay’. The largest string of words we received was along the lines of ‘I need your card’ when it came to paying.

Except for the awful staffing, the motel itself was okay. The room was big and clean (with fridge, microwave and coffee maker) and the bathroom was surprisingly nice, but the room did have the least comfortable bed of our 3.5 week trip (fine if you like sleeping on a marshmallow) and the air-con was excessively loud, so we had to turn it off at night and when we wanted to watch TV. The walls were lacking sound insulation, as other reviews have mentioned (we could hear enough to be able to discern within seconds of their arrival that our neighbours were German), but fortunately our neighbours were quiet at night so we weren’t disturbed at all.

I was completely put off the place by being made to feel so unwelcome, but if we had been checked in by someone with a smile and who at least pretended to be happy to see paying customers, then I would probably have rated this as ‘Very Good’.

(Given how many other reviews refer to the friendly reception, I feel that I should confirm that we were most definitely at the Everglades City Motel and aren't confusing it with some other place! I can only assume that we caught a day with either relief staff, or with the usual staff having a very bad day - but whichever is the case, it doesn't excuse them.)

The room was what I expected from a motel. It's kind of dated. But it's all I needed. The microwave actually came in handy. The best part was the bathroom. It was surprisingly modern and updated. Unfortunately, my window air conditioning unit stopped working after a while. The sign said to call the front desk to get it working again, but the temperature really wasn't bad enough in the room to complain. But during mosquito season, I probably would've complained. The weathering around the doors is pretty awful. You can clearly see daylight at the bottom. I'll bet during mosquito season, this could be a big problem.

But the location is just fine. The island cafe next door is convenient.

The ladies at the front desk are well trained. It's almost like they have a script to welcome tourists. But they are very helpful and friendly.

Great little hotel! Small little town with great food. Airboat ride with Doug's. Matt was our guide and he was very entertaining, funny and informative during the while ride which lasted about an hour. Would do it again. The stone crabs were pricey but delicious at Cammelia's. Bring lots of bug spray though. The no seeims will eat you up. Great trip. Would highly recommend Everglades city if you like small towns. Great fishing. Didn't see any gators though. Lots of wildlife though.

This is a typical Motel, with your car in front of your door. All rooms have been recently renovated and are comfortable, with a very nice bathroom and beautiful shower.
The lady at the reception is friendly and efficient.
No breakfast at the motel but the restaurant located next door serves wonderful breakfasts of all kinds.

All that you need. Clean and confortable bed, clean bathroom, TV, free wifi, good directions to local restaurants and the Everglades Park. Clerk made contact with local guide for sunset cruise and bird photography that we enjoyed from 17:30 to 19:00.

Even though the government was in shut down we still took our trip to Florida. Everglades City Motel is a true Mom and Pop establishment but we love having our kids experience places not of the cookie cutter format.

Check in was easy pleasant and personal and the room we stayed in ( 2 bed efficiency) was huge. Was nice to have the extra space.Downside was the one window unit AC was not enough to battle the outside temps so stayed warm even when set at 65....

Otherwise was enjoyable clean and served our purpose!

We were off season and what little is in town closes early....City Seafood which we wanted to go to closed at 6 p.m. so went to Island Cafe next door. Was VERY casual and ok food but overpriced for what ya got..at least if seafood/chicken route. Pizza had good reviews here so may be the way to go..

Overall the motel was a nice getaway and back to simpler times...
