Stayed for one night over Memorial Day weekend. This place does not deal with credit cards - cash only - they tell you ahead of time so be prepared. The room is actually a cottage with a screened porch. Very clean. Air conditioned. The staff were friendly. The pool was nice. Did some fishing right off the dock out back. Would definitely stay here again.

What kind of hotel doesn't accept credit cards? Well this one doesn't, I half jokingly asked about wifi, which there is none. This is all a shame because the Rod & Gun is a real treasure. This century old building is designed like a 19C English hunting lodge. With a bit of imagination and someone who smiled on reception this place would be the pick of the Everglades. Our lodge/room was comfortable and clean with a/c and 200 tv channels and situated by the river. I would recommend having dinner here, the food was very good for $25. If you're in the Everglades for one night and want to stay here, make sure you have cash and don't expect a welcome smile. If only the management had the Internet - they could read their reviews.

I wish this place would get serious. They don't take credit cards, so I'm supposed to carry $400 or more in cash for a couple nights stay and meals on site? Helloooo! We are in the 21st century. Breakfast was as good as McDonalds, with slower service. Dinner was good quality; scallops were excellent, and reasonable at $22.95. Staff was friendly. They don't appear to own an answering machine. No phone in the cottage room, which is no big deal. Room was clean, spotless! Beds were comfortable; slept fine. Ask to look at couple cottage rooms before deciding on one. In late April, it wasn't even close to full. Few customers at restaurant. Bug screens on all windows. Cafe on main drag (sign- 'CAFE' ) has excellent food, reasonable prices, good service. For a leisurely, comfortable pace, this is it. I wish they'd turn it into a full-service hotel, or give it up and quit siphoning off 10 customers a night from the other places in town. Beautiful, old building.

Room Tip: Ask to see a couple rooms. Pick the one you like best.

What a find. The hotel is beautiful. Sadly there are no rooms in the building( the upper floors have not been used since the 70's); the rooms are in cottages, which are clean and comfortable with private screened porches. The pool is beautiful with a waterfall and a real deep end of 8 foot. The food is nothing special but it is on the water and you can sit on the screened in porch.

The Rod and Gun is a very interesting place to visit. Lots of old world charm but could definitely benefit from some tlc. The bed was very rickety and uncomfortable. Bring your own toiletries because they only supply soap! We loved the private screened porch but would have appreciated a coffee maker in the room or in the lobby.

I'm rating the Rod and Gun based upon the whole experience ...which is better than the sum of it's parts.

The Rod & Gun is a circa 1890, well maintained, hotel and restaurant in very rural and laid back Everglades City Florida. It has hosted many Presidents and celebrities ...and presents a rare opportunity to experience old Florida in untouched grandeur.

My wife and I and a good friend stayed and dined at the R&G on a recent fishing trip in the everglades. The room was clean, very adequate, recently updated albeit a little pricy on an absolute basis. The restaurant and main building reek of old Florida ambience. Tons of indoor and veranda dining with an upscale menu and well prepared food. Again a little pricey. Again, if I were to rate the room and food on a standalone basis, I'd rate them a bit lower, but the whole experience was five stars. I didn't mind the prices ...they are maintaining a piece of Americans!

Try it, relax and enjoy.

Room Tip: Ask for their best cottage rooms.

I have stayed at the Rod and Gun Club on four occasions, and my experience has been consistent. The atmosphere is delightfully unpretentious, and the whole lodge evokes the feeling of old Florida. The furnishings are decidedly simple, and the staff are consistently friendly, accommodating, and helpful. If someone is going down to Everglades City to fish or explore the western Everglades, staying at the Rod and Gun Club will complete the entire experience. I recommend it enthusiastically.
