Glorious antique place with old world charm, friendly folks and a relaxing atmosphere. Felt as if we'd stepped back in time. Highly recommend it. We'll definitely go back if we're in this part of the country again.

Room Tip: Bring cash!! They do not accept credit cards or checks. If you have special needs be sure to discu...

We love visiting off-the-beaten-path locales and this place did not disappoint. The Rod & Gun Club is truly Old Florida at its best; it's like stepping back in time as you walk through the cedar-walled main lodge. The history here is spectacular; the hallway entry lined with framed newspaper articles from decades part is testament to that. We arrived just before lunch on a Friday and had the building practically to ourselves to explore.

Lunch was very good; fried gator, frog legs and oysters. Lots of other selections too, but chose fare reflective of our first visit to Everglades City. We ate on a huge screened-in porch which had a beautiful view of the mangroves and waterway out back. We did not stay overnight (in town for airboat ride) but are definitely planning a return winter trip to the cottages, which appeared clean and well-kept. If you are looking for fancy Marriott-esque accommodations, this is not it. The Rod & Gun Club is a classic treasure in the middle of nowhere. If you appreciate simplicity and history, this place is well worth the detour off U.S. 41. We'll be back for sure!

What a charming place! The staff are very helpful and friendly. The hotel lobby is amazing, it was relaxing to sit down and read a book in this historic lodge. Food was good, we are 3 meals there. A little pricy but we are in the middle of no where. The rooms were updated, clean and have really good water pressure. This place is a hidden jewel. We will be back soon. Being cash if you come.

Stayed for one night over Memorial Day weekend. This place does not deal with credit cards - cash only - they tell you ahead of time so be prepared. The room is actually a cottage with a screened porch. Very clean. Air conditioned. The staff were friendly. The pool was nice. Did some fishing right off the dock out back. Would definitely stay here again.

What kind of hotel doesn't accept credit cards? Well this one doesn't, I half jokingly asked about wifi, which there is none. This is all a shame because the Rod & Gun is a real treasure. This century old building is designed like a 19C English hunting lodge. With a bit of imagination and someone who smiled on reception this place would be the pick of the Everglades. Our lodge/room was comfortable and clean with a/c and 200 tv channels and situated by the river. I would recommend having dinner here, the food was very good for $25. If you're in the Everglades for one night and want to stay here, make sure you have cash and don't expect a welcome smile. If only the management had the Internet - they could read their reviews.

I wish this place would get serious. They don't take credit cards, so I'm supposed to carry $400 or more in cash for a couple nights stay and meals on site? Helloooo! We are in the 21st century. Breakfast was as good as McDonalds, with slower service. Dinner was good quality; scallops were excellent, and reasonable at $22.95. Staff was friendly. They don't appear to own an answering machine. No phone in the cottage room, which is no big deal. Room was clean, spotless! Beds were comfortable; slept fine. Ask to look at couple cottage rooms before deciding on one. In late April, it wasn't even close to full. Few customers at restaurant. Bug screens on all windows. Cafe on main drag (sign- 'CAFE' ) has excellent food, reasonable prices, good service. For a leisurely, comfortable pace, this is it. I wish they'd turn it into a full-service hotel, or give it up and quit siphoning off 10 customers a night from the other places in town. Beautiful, old building.

Room Tip: Ask to see a couple rooms. Pick the one you like best.

What a find. The hotel is beautiful. Sadly there are no rooms in the building( the upper floors have not been used since the 70's); the rooms are in cottages, which are clean and comfortable with private screened porches. The pool is beautiful with a waterfall and a real deep end of 8 foot. The food is nothing special but it is on the water and you can sit on the screened in porch.
